Free Western Series: Bonanza - Episode 130 - The Saga of Whizzer Mcgee - Hoss tries to help Whizzer McGee, a man with a short height, short fuse, thin skin, and big ideas.
The Saga of Whizzer Mcgee
Director: Don McDougall
Writer: Robert L. Welch (as Robert Lyon Welch)
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 28 April 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
"Hoss meets Whizzer McGee, a man easily provoked by others mocking his short height. Hoss encourages Whizzer to believe in himself, and helps him get a job. However, Whizzer falls in love with a saloon girl who tells him she wants a man with money. Consequently, Whizzer accepts a big loan from a man who just wants to use Whizzer's room that abuts on bank. Soon Whizzer finds an opportunity to steal bank money from bank robbers, resulting in tragedy despite Hoss's efforts to help him." Written by Charles Delacroix on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"This story initially wants to make a viewer laugh his head off, but as it progresses it makes that same viewer want to weep. George Brenlin puts himself very well into the role of Whizzer McGee, a five-foot man who is bitter as bitter can be. He is a one-time orphan who has had no friends in his life. Jeanne Bal plays the part of the dance hall girl with whom Whizzer becomes taken, but she has no need for him. One thing that stands out is that there are consequences to trying to be something a person can never be. The story does have a sad end but it can easily arouse people's thinking about their own type character." Written by daviddaphnered
"This Bonanza story concerns one of Hoss Cartwright's unusual friends he makes, in this case George Brenlin who is a little guy most self conscious about his height. Dan Blocker tries to get him to believe in himself.
But Brenlin is caught up with a golddigging saloon girl played by Jeanne Bal. The little guy will do whatever it takes to win this girl who is sadly way out of his league.
Nicely played by Brenlin who you feel sorry for and Bal as the saloon girl with a heart of stone." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Hoss tries to help him to get his life together, but he has a chip on his shoulder when dealing with his size. And people make fun of him for his being a small man. Eric Herns Marietta GA." Written by eherns on IMDb.com

A cool story. When I was very young, I rode for a prestigious stable in CT. After Dan Blocker died, they bought his horses. I was so excited to be around them, brush them, clean their stalks.

That's probably about right for his character on this episode. His real name is Burt Mustin. He played on Andy Griffith show. He was born on February 8th 1884. He died at age 92 in 1977. So, when he was born life was about like it is on Bonanza.

In Bonanza the emphasis is always to be pretty and beautiful as a woman. Other qualities don't matter. So it's only fair for beautiful women to go for rich men, to have a good/better life. If this guy wants a beautiful woman he has to pay the price. Why does he have to be so superficial and not find a less prettier woman but one with a good/better character...
@jadezee6316

its human nature to be attracted to beautiful things....not just people...the sunset...diamonds..art etc...some make fools out of themselves pursuing them...here you saw the abuse the little man got for no reason...abuse he has suffered his whole life.....now having a beautiful woman on his arm would sure go a long way to take away that sting.....dont you understand that?
@yougetagoldstar
@yougetagoldstar 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Annette, I don't know exactly what made you say that, so I can't address your main concern, whatever it is; but I can say that it's not a complete analysis. I don't mean that as an offense; I'm just saying that objectively with hopes that a more full analysis will make you feel better. You said that in Bonanza the emphasis is always to be pretty and beautiful as a woman, but did you notice that all the women who are thought of highly in bonanza are also not thieves or murderers or whores or cruel or wicked or unladylike? You can't say that "other qualities don't matter" when the writers seem so committed to portray those qualities in their female characters. They are not careless at all when it comes to this. There are some episodes where the featured female character was a singer/dancer and sung suggestive songs at a venue, but so far (I've only seen this many episodes) that was only about two women, and there was an underlying message that their behavior was wicked or not in line with the Cartwrights' values. (The woman in the first episode was thought of as dishonorable--and I consider the last scene to be bad writing; and in the episode The Actress, Joe abandoned his plans to pursue that woman because he knew she wanted fame more than settling down.) Also, would you consider the Cartwright men to be ugly and not handsome? You can't tell me that they didn't emphasize at least some superficial qualities in those men. They didn't just pick any ole men to play the lead roles. Those men are well-built, strong, hardworking, brave, gentlemanly and wealthy. Take a look at some of the comments to these uploads; here and there you'll spot comments from women fawning over the Cartwright men. Some episodes showed Adam and Joe shirtless, or with their clothes torn and dirty after some heroic feat. Remember Joe's brother? If I had to guess, I would say that he was eye candy for females. This show does eye service and mind service to both males and females; you can't overlook that. And that's just what producers do to get you to watch the show. It's as Jade said. Walk down the media section in any store and on the cover of the movies you'll see attractive people. You have to add that industry-standard intentional displaying of attractive people to your analysis. I don't fault Bonanza for that, I just see it as something they feel they must do because everyone else in showbiz does it. Please don't condense this down to "men are bad", that sounds too close to the poison people spew out today. I recommend ignoring what society says today (especially feminists), they don't know what they're talking about. If you allow yourself to think outside the "men are bad" thing, you'll see so many more details in a matter. It seems that your last comment has to do with the story itself. "Why does he have to be so superficial and not find a less prettier woman"? I'd say this episode answered that question. Remember, in this episode the writers set Whizzer McGee up to fail for doing that. The writers intentionally displayed Whizzer as someone who was painfully insecure, and someone who wanted money and a pretty woman to validate himself. That flaw in his character jumps right out at you; and was pretty much key to creating the dilemma in the episode. Nothing in this episode encouraged men to pursue a woman solely because of her looks. If anything, you have to say that this episode taught men that you shouldn't do that.

The whole premise behind Bonanza is that ALL HUMAN BEINGS MATTER! This is why the Cartwright’s are always getting involved with all types of characters, the beautiful people, but also the good, the bad, and the ugly. I’ve seen some not so attractive women with beautiful characters held to high esteem, and I’ve seen some beautiful women get their come upping in this show, so you can’t rightly say that only beautiful women matter in Bonanza. The Cartwright’s treat everyone with care and respect, even when those they help aren’t so deserving of their help.

Well ,a lot women loves Adam because he is Handsome as the girls loves Little Joe because he is not ugly either, is not Bonanza, is life, and beauty matter but is in the eys of the behold , is the woman who likes to be beautiful than the others and be notice for that since history times.
