Free Western Classic: Bonanza - Episode 141 - Calamity Over the Comstock - Trouble with a capital "T" that rhymes with "C" comes to Virginia City when Little Joe brings young Calamity Jane home to the Ponderosa after rescuing her from a deadly prairie raid.
Calamity Over the Comstock
Director: Charles R. Rondeau
Writer: Warren Douglas
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 3 November 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Stefanie Powers guest-stars as the legendary, cantankerous Calamity Jane. Having promised not to reveal that Calamity is a "mere woman" so that she can collect an inheritance, Joe finds himself attracted to the two-fisted, straight-shootin' hoyden. He also ends up as the apex of a romantic triangle involving Calamity and her former suitor Doc Holliday (Christopher Dark), which climaxes with a showdown between Holliday and Joe. The delightful Fifi D'Orsay makes a rare TV appearance as Babette. Written on rottentomatoes.com

Can't help but to love Stephanie Powers, with her one in a million original personalty. Plus that healthy self confidence to believe in herself, and what she do, and what she is about. For her to play the role of Calamity Jane, and be so authenic about it let's you know she's a very versatile actress. She sure showed what she was about when she pointed that pistol at Doc.Holliday, under her fur wrap. It's like she was saying, "Doc, I ain't playing", lol. She's a very beautiful woman. I love Bonanza episodes, and I always recognize the writers, for creating interesting acts, and casting who always seem to pick the right actors to play roles. Don't know how they do it, but they sure do it well. Thanks

Cute episode with Stephanie Powers as a young Calamity, and a what could've been. Wonderful with history, that you can interpolate "what if's." Doc Holliday had Tuberculosis and was going around the West. Was he a "spreader" in today's "medical jargon?" Quick with his dental tools as he was with a six-shooter. And he knew the Earp's. How many people know that Wyatt Earp lived in Pasadena, California? Places, people have connections. History is full of untold stories..... and what might have been. Thanks Grjngo.

They got their women mixed up in this. Calamity Jane was friends with Bill Hickock. Docs friend was Big Nose Kate, a lady of the night. Calamity Jane was a dead eye with her rifle. She was in Bills Wild West show....

Big Nose Kate had a (still there and historic) place in Cochise County, in what later became the town of Cochise, Arizona, where purportedly guests were entertained, not terribly far from Tombstone.

This is the second movie/TV show I've seen Stephanie Powers and Big John Hamilton in together! They both worked together in McClintock with John Wayne. In this episode Big John was the guy in the saloon she hit and in McClintock Big John beat the crap out of Patrick Wayne.

This little female firecracker is awesome. (c. 1852-1903) the popular name of Martha Jane Burke, a woman who became famous in America's Wild West for her skill at riding and shooting. She dressed like a man and said she would bring calamity (= great harm) to anyone who made her angry or tried to love her. It is hilarious how Joe is in the bar with the Doc and trying to act tough. So far this is a favorite episode. Been binge watching since season 1, episode 1, and this is one of the funniest.

The actress who played her was hot, but the real Calamity Jane looked very manly. The real Doc Holliday had tuberculosis and died of it at the age of 36 (!). I find it strange that we never learned about either of them in US History sophmore year or junior year (I grew up in the USA), but only from American TV shows like Bonanza or even Star Trek, which had an episode about the gunfight at the OK Corrall, and modern sources like Wikipedia. Maybe it wasn't that important in the overarching scheme of things? I'm just grateful for the makers of these TV shows to have made these shows to expand my knowledge of history.

@@rosalindayoung1088 LOL not lacking at all. I wouldn't say he was small, a mean anything taller than me is quite tall LOL he was just under 5' 9 . No basketball player but tall enough. What he lost in stature he made up for in personality, attitude and humanity. He wasn't just handsome but a good human being. I miss him Soooo much, we sure don't see many of him today. ❤️

Bonanza wove a lot of history into episodes, so not sure why they would get this so wrong. Calamity Jane never met Doc Holliday. He was involved (common-law married) to Big Nose Kate. Calamity Jane was actually in love with Wild Bill Hickok, even though Hickok was married and was not interested in more than friendship with Jane.

In real life, Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Canary) never met 'Doc' Holliday: she actually was in love and pursued 'Wild Bill' Hickock. Doc Holliday did have a bad cough, as suggested in this episode, from his tuberculosis. He died in 1887.
