Free Western Classic: Bonanza - Episode 144 - The Waiting Game - When Frank Dayton is thrown from his horse and killed, his wife Laura tells their daughter, Peggy, that he went on a long trip, preferring to let the little girl hold onto the hope that her daddy would come home again someday.
The Waiting Game
Director: Richard C. Sarafian
Writer: Ed Adamson
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 8 December 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
When Frank Dayton is thrown from his horse and killed, his wife Laura tells their daughter, Peggy, that he went on a long trip, preferring to let the little girl hold onto the hope that her daddy would come home again someday. But Laura's plan to shelter Peggy from her father's death is soon challenged when Adam Cartwright comes to call and the pretty widow finds herself falling in love.
Reviews:
"It was a foolish bit of bravado that cost Wayde Preston his life as he tried to jump a fence from the Ponderosa to his own land. But Preston fell from his horse and was killed. All the while wife Kathie Browne and daughter Katie Sweet wait for him.
In this episode Adam Cartwright turns psychological counselor. to both mother and daughter. Katie Sweet was daddy's little girl. But Sweet was all that was keeping Browne and Preston together. Preston was a no good philandering drunk.
Because of her own issues Browne decides to keep the news of Preston's death from her daughter. What Pernell Roberts does is make Browne see that she has a lot of issues in and apart from the child.
Nicely done domestic drama, unusual for a western." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Years ago my mother and I went to the Apple Blossom parade in Winchester, Va and one of the honored celebrities in the parade was Pernell Roberts. My mother was such a great fan of his so when she saw him in the parade ridig on his horse, mind you , she got so excited and yelled his name. He waved at her and gave her a wink. He was so handsome. I believe she was in a daze all that day. (correction: riding on his horse)

Did you understand that 'touchy' means irritably reactive, when apparently Susan meant *touching, which means sweet to the heart. Those are opposite meanings. When people use an opposite meaning word, it doesn't communicate what they want to communicate. Now if you want to be irritably reactive about my sharing that wisdom, then that is your problem. Who am I to correct somebody's spelling? I am someone who knows English, and the purpose of language, which is to communicate clearly and accurately. @@susanvenkatraman9503 Susan, I was very polite in my asking what you meant. I was not rude, I was not presumptive. When you place an exclamation point at the end of the word, that suggests anger. If you were being touchy (irritably reactive), then you may want to rethink your reactions to helpful, courteous inquiries. ~ If you'd like to know how to edit your original comment so it reflects the word *touching, then one only needs to hover their cursor to the right of the first line of their comment to locate the 3 vertical dots, and when they do and click on those 3 dots, they can choose between Edit or Delete. He didn't like the show for a number of reasons - which can be found out in numerous interviews with Pernell - but mainly because he got sick of playing the part of an adult that had to ask his Pa if it was 'okay' to do things - plus, his character was never allowed to grow. Also, NONE of the Cartwright brothers were ever allowed to really become men, have relationships with women, marry them, have families etc. Being a Cartwright girl friend was - more often than not - a reason for a 'sudden move out of town' or even a death sentence. It was the running joke at the time - like in the original Star Trek, to 'beam down in a red shirt' ? A certain death sentence there, too...

The intensity here is so amazingly freeing, in an instant a loving wise gentleman Adam C. guides two beautiful women a mother and her daughter to a renewed understanding of confession participation, forgiveness, and redemption, turning life into a renewed party. All the while his patience and knowing is explained while asking simple questions as a guiding master into a renewed identity, fun, and laughter. Which is always innate and waiting for all of us to explore with curiosity and gratitude.

As a kid, watching these episodes, Adam seemed like a total dud. Only later, when watching the reruns, I realized he was absolutely crucial to the show. I don't watch episodes after 1965. The woman playing Laura, I just could never "cotton to her". But she's killing it in that salmon colored gown. Lovely to look at, but better left alone. Laura has some weird resentment of Peggy and her relationship with her father. Laura needs to come to terms with her abusive dead husband. The little girl is a scene stealer.

These stories are interesting...I would give the writers credit for excellent stories. My problem with this series is the costumes. I know that most viewers don't care...but this is all supposed to be happening in the 1840s-50s. That little girl, in her jeans and plaid shirt, looks more modern than my sisters and I looked in the 1960s! In general, the male characters of this series look like they could fit in with pioneer ranchers of the 1840s. But these women! and the little girls! What were the costumers thinking? This little girl could have walked right over to the Brady Bunch set, to play a part without changing her costume. I know that this is a popular series as re-plays. For certain reasons, this popularity is well deserved. The stories are original, the acting is really very good. Why did they spoil all of this, with those 1960s outfits, shoes and hairstyles for the women?

The date on Frank's grave shouldn't say that he died in 1861. The first two seasons of Bonanza are in 1861 and Little Joe was 18 or 19 when the show started. But in season 4 we know that Little Joe had a 22nd birthday which would have to mean that season 4 was in 1863 and this episode should be in 1864.
@neilwaldock6272

There was no continuity with dates in Bonanza. The episodes (apart from the flashbacks) were set between 1861 and 1868, but the dates jump forwards and back within each season. Historical events and historical characters were often pigeon-holed into what ever date without any accuracy. You just have to watch Bonanza for what it was, without trying to make any order out of it, because there wasn't.

@@coltgun876 I would have assumed that too, but Bonanza was stuck in a sort of time warp, bouncing around between dates. Maybe that's how they managed to keep Adam, Hoss and Little Joe as 'The Boys' for so long, perpetually under Ben's thumb. But, I kinda like it this way.

@@didirosie3226 Yes I'm aware of that now I'm pretty sure that's the only episode of the entire series that's set in 1859 while the rest of Season 1 - 8 are in the 1860s. Last time I checked each episode is in a random year of that decade

This episode must be a prelude to that detestable episode "The Pressure Game." Really! Since when is courtship and marriage a GAME? God only know what makes a man fall in love with a woman, but does a man the quality and intelligence of Adam Cartwright really deserve a wounded and mindless woman and a warped child into the bargain (all washed miraculously clean in the last 5 minutes), like these two? In the Pressure Game, Joan Blondell plays a ruthless woman - and Adam is artfully TRAPPED into marriage. It looks sweet enough, but the whole premise is rotten to the core. NOT two of the best episodes.
