That's a lovely tree. I've got about 30 of these, all cuttings from two originals, in 4" pots. They're just about ready to start growing here in Australia. Despite what some people say, to me they've got all the advantages and none of the disadvantages of other trees. That will respond beautifully to your pruning; can't wait to see some updates!

Thanks, good luck for the season ahead! Yeah I always say there’s no desert biomes in Japan so tradition doesn’t count 😊

Lots of new plants from those cuttings! The first time I saw this plant was a huge specimen at the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakesh. I got 2 as soon as I returned, variegated version and green! I’m currently growing the 2 varieties twisted together into one trunk on some of mine!

I wish people would stop calling this a Jade, even a Dwarf Jade. It's not even in the same family! The Portulacaria Afra (Elephant bush) is edible.... the Jade, however, is mildly toxic to humans. The Portulacaria Afra (Elephant bush) may look a little like a Jade (Crassula ovata) but thats about all.

Your videos are a pleasure to watch. Very well done all around. Can you quickly define the context of 'wire pads', are pads the plant, and wiring is the act of using copper wire to hold it in place?
@grobonsai Жыл бұрын
Pads are clusters of foliage that make up the canopy. Each branch will have one or more ‘pads of foliage’. So wiring pads means to organise the branching so the foliage forms a cohesive visual group of leaves. The shape of the pads help give the tree a particular look and feel. Long, thin pads emphasise a trees elegance or hint to a higher elevation environment. Broad, deep pads suggest a powerful presence and/or suggest a lowland or coastal environment.

@@grobonsai Thank you! That’s exactly the information I was missing, plus some nuance. I’m going through your videos to find a faster growing practice species or something of the like. Thanks again. I want to do five or so, majority faster, with a few slower species in there.

very good video I have many portularacrias in Puerto Rico but I live in the United States. I see that you have like a box to put your portulacaria. Do you do that in winter with grow lights?
@albertolopez27149 ай бұрын
What type of soil are you using?
@grobonsai9 ай бұрын
Yes it’s a grow tent. This winter I didn’t use it though because the energy to power the lights is too much money for me at th moment. Soil is 1:1:1 akadama pumice lava rock

Can we build jade bonsai under table lamp?
@grobonsai Жыл бұрын
It is good over winter, but either outdoors in warmer months, or under stronger growlights. unfortunately a weak light won't keep them growing well forever.
@Indiekid-1976Ай бұрын
They thrive in hot countries. Partially in full sun and dappled through a canopy. Long periods of drought and occasional heavy rain. They are eaten by elephants in their natural habitat!
@user-nc8se9in8o Жыл бұрын
How long do you keep the light on in the tent?
@grobonsai Жыл бұрын
Hello, there’s no right answer because it depends what you are trying to achieve. If you want maximum growth 18hours a day is possible but uses lots of energy. To keep the plants happy during the cold dark winter 8 hours is enough. It’s a case of figuring what you are happy with. This winter I cannot afford to put the lights on at all 🙃
@user-nc8se9in8o Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’m going to be traveling for 3 days so I was wondering if I can just keep the light on the entire time, don’t have an automatic timer at the moment

@grobonsai Жыл бұрын
Theres two ways, you can plant them fresh off the tree in some soil - coco coir and perlite, anything really - and leave them outside until they grow in spring. Or you can collect them, put them in the fridge in a bag of damp perlite for 3 months in december. plant them late feb/early march, keep damp but not soggy and protect from frost.
