Grocery Shopping in a Village in the Caucasus with Me

I hope this doesn't sound too weird but you helped me doing my grocery shopping today so thank you very much. Let me explain: I have anxiety and panic attacks and one of my fears is going into a supermarket. It gets better when I'm there but leaving the house to do the shopping is hard. Today I put on my headphones and played this video while leaving. I felt so much less alone. Thank you ❤️.

Hi Victoria. I don't know what the rules are in Georgia and Russia, but in the United States all children must be in rear facing car seats until the age of two years old to protect them. In the event of an accident the baby will have a serious injury if the car seat is front facing and if the baby is not properly secured in the car seat. The bread and cheese look so yummy.

I love that you made food shopping a real family outing. That wouldn’t really be typical here in the US. As far as food costs here, we have had pretty significant price increases, sadly, with no end in sight. Watching your video is a reminder though that food shopping can/should go back to basics-Americans buy too much pre-prepared or partially prepared foods. Our health and wallets would be better served to shop as you did. Would you please video what you make with your purchases today?

I decided start growing most of my produce so I could save some money. It’s pretty expensive here in the supermarkets! I couldn’t believe that amount of food you were able to get for less than $100 USD. We typically buy direct from farmers - half a side of beef, a pig and some chickens and keep them in our big deep freeze. Additionally, I typically get whatever else I need at weekly farmer’s markets. I live in rural Manitoba, Canada for reference. Love the videos. It’s so neat to see windows into other people’s lives ❤

I live in New York City, where it is very common to shop the way you do -- at a butcher for meat, green market for produce, bakery, cheese store, etc. It is usually much better quality than what you get in a supermarket. Our prices are higher, though. One difference is that I walk everywhere when I shop for my groceries and carry things home in a backpack. There are large supermarkets for people who choose that way of shopping. But I like to help keep the small independent shops in business!

That's a bit like it is in my city here in Germany too. We have markets that basically travel to different parts of the city throughout the week and I happen to live close to a market hall that is open every single weekend. I live close to 6 grocery stores and everything I buy gets transported in my backpack or reusable bags. No need for a car really

We have road side farmers stalls here in Australia too (I live in an agricultural area). The produce there is usually much cheaper, fresher and better than in the shops as it is grown locally, very fresh and not force ripened or stored for a long time. The cheese was much cheaper for you than we get here. I can get chickens for a similar price. If pork and beef is on a special I might come close to those prices. So great you are supporting small business like this. Some of the countryside reminded me of here. It looked like a lovely day out. Enjoy your party. xx

Before your next grocery trip, invest in a couple of picnic/food coolers, so you can store your meats and perishable foods safely. The meats you bought looks so hearty and fresh, especially the pork.

I think it's an Eastern European thing that we love freshly baked bread so much 😄🥰 When I was a child, I used to go get bread from the local bakery during my summer vacation in my grandparents village. By the time I reached home, half the bread was eaten (by me!!!) so I had to go all the way back to buy a 2nd loaf of bread 🤣🤣 Best bread ever 🥰🥰🥰🥖

From 1944 to 1962 my mother made fresh light bread she called it every Sunday. A pan of rolls, a pan of hamburger buns sometimes, and at least three loaves of bread for lunches. So yes I love bread fresh from the oven.

It's crazy expensive here in the US. Just ok strawberries are $1.80/lb, peaches( if you can find any decent),$3/lb, 1 lb plain cream cheese is almost $9,1 regular size cantaloupe is $3.50, 1 gallon of cheap milk is $4-6. If you can afford quality or organic the prices go up from there. Some is seasonal but the prices are high for low grade produce that often rots before it ripens. These days the prices have gone sky high and the quality of the goods is in the crapper.

@@Carroty_Peg Those prices were from a small local grocery chain that tends to have better quality and prices. Yes, Walmart is ubiquitous across America. Even if you are fortunate enough to live near a so-called farmer's market, the quality might be higher but generally not price. Amazon, Walmart, or any large corporation you shop with, it's the same story. I have heard Walmart treats their employees a shade better & is more charitable with local communities than Amazon.

In Western Australia, the meat alone would cost A$100.00. The rest together would also be A$120 - A$150. Freshly baked bread is only in loaf form, buns, rolls, round loaf oblong loaf. Can ask for loaf to be sliced if buying at an artisan bakery. Otherwise most bread comes sliced and in a plastic bag. Another point of difference I noticed is here newborn baby seats have to face the other way around (baby facing the back of the car) until the child is six months old, then the seat can face the same way you have yours now. Your shopping trip so reminded me of shopping when I was young. Separate stores around the neighborhoods, butchers, bakeries, delis, fish markets, vegetable stands, and smaller supermarkets. Now, it's big impersonal supermarkets. It's so nice you are in such a beautiful place. We live in the state of Georgia in the US. Right now groceries are very high in price. You got a lot for 100 US dollars. I was looking at a corned beef the other day which was about 2lbs and it was $56. Just crazy.

@@kellydale2633 - could it be that the US has a lot of processed food? I think we import a lot of European food and the pound is a strong currency. Organic food is very expensive though. An organic chicken is about 3 times the price of an inorganic one. Chicken is currently just under 50c to 80c a pound and unfortunately climbing

It's so interesting to see everyday things like food shopping from other parts of the world! I live in Sweden and we have very few food markets, most people get everything from big supermarkets. The vegetables, fruits and bread are definitely more expensive in Sweden. The bread you got would probably have been around 2 USD here. The supermarket items seem to be about the same price though.

Our groceries in the US are much more expensive. It has been hot and dry this year, and our little garden is finally producing tomatoes. Cucumbers did not grow well, but the peppers loved the weather! Earlier we had beets and cabbage. It is so nice you can get such lovely produce

I come from Romania, we have roadside shops, which are actually just vendors , and the at home shops pretty similar to the Georgian ones. I got a bit actually melancholic seeing those places, feels and looks a lot like home, Of course there are so many shops like penny kaufland real etc, it' s where we would buy the chemicals like detergents cleaning supplies, some others things that might be cheaper. The prices are a lot bigger. I think a lot of the products are quite more expensive than in Germany which is where I currently live.

I live in South Dakota, a state in the midwest or the plains of the US. The amount of the fruit and veggies that you showed us would have cost me approximately $34 and it would not have been as fresh and wonderful looking as your table. Two whole chickens would be about $10 and the beef, well, cut like that for shashlik (shish-ka-bob) would have been about $25 all by itself. I just love your videos about grocery shopping, it's so much fun to compare. It's so great that you enjoy cooking with fresh foods and everything you've shown us over the years has looked so delicious. My husband and I are now fans of buckwheat! You got a lot of food for the money spent. Food prices here in the US vary on where you live, what you buy, and where you buy it. I just went shopping two days ago and I got 6lbs of beef roast for $23, 7lbs of tomatoes for $3, 7 yellow bell peppers for $2, a gallon of milk for $2, 2lbs of carrots for $2, 3 lbs of onions for $3, 18 count eggs for $1.50, cucumbers were .60 each, grapes were $2 a pound, and bananas were .50 a pound. I live in the Midwest and shopped at a chain grocery store (not at Walmart)

I live in the northeast of the US and we would spend probably twice that on groceries at least and we go to things called farmers markets for the vegetables if we don't get them in the store but we do take a drive out to the country to get bulk amounts of vegetables like bushels and vegetables if we do canning. When I visit Russia I fell in love with Russian food espeially Shashlik but also blinis and the breads, solyanka, piroshki (and a bit of vodka and kvass) !!!You are so fortunate to be able to shop that way .... the chickens look lovely with all that yellow fat, so much better than the mass produced ones sold at grocery stores. That was cool. It reminds me of farmers markets here in Ireland, that are still like this. Thank God for Lidl and Aldi though. The food they have here in Ireland is amazing quality. For those that don't know, they are major German supermarkets that are all over Europe, and really multiplied very fast here in Ireland over the last 15 or so years since they first came here. But I still love the small local food stalls. That's a very impressive amount of food for just under $100 US though. But I think you could still get the same, for roughly the same price here in Ireland, maybe.

Aldis has really taken off here in the USA in the last few years. I enjoy shopping there but the closest store is about 10 miles away, and with gas so high I am not going that far to shop.

Apparently they started in post WW2 Germany, when everyone was really poor, so there was a need to offer people food at the lowest possible prices. So I get why that spread around the world. They sort of dominated over the local supermarket chains here in Ireland, like "SuperValue".

Your grocery prices are great and the produce looks so beautiful and fresh. My husband is a butcher, so I find it interesting to see butcher shops in other areas of the world. I live in the US and groceries have gotten so expensive here. Actually, everything is getting expensive here.

Wow I just spent around $310 on groceries today in Canada and I didn’t get close to what you got today. Here those fruit and veggies would probably be close to $100 CAD which is around $75-80US. Everything you got looked so good!

How lovely! Reminded me of my country, Malta, back to before we joined the EU and started having so many regulations that threw all the small businesses out of business! Sadly the way forward is to have everything traced and regularised and bought from the great chains of supermarkets!

I live in New York City and buy many things from small shops like you especially green markets in the summer for fresh vegetables and fruit. Its little expensive but the quality is very high. I grew up in farm country where we grew everything we could in huge gardens and got our meat from my grandparents who were farmers.

You know, I'd rather go to the weekly farmer's market in our town's park and to the town's farmer's co-op than to a supermarket to buy the veggies I'll need for the week. I admired the chili peppers. Last week at the co-op I bought some shiny deep red Hungarian paprika chili peppers that will be added to winter stews. They are super hot and have a wonderful autumnal aroma. After cutting the chilies in half, removing the seeds and rinsing them (and saving their seeds for spring planting in 2023), I froze some and dehydrated the rest. I can imagine your pleasure as you bought the fresh produce, meats, and dairy products. Like you, Tolya and Agatha, I also enjoy eating freshly made bread.

Hello from Idaho USA! I loved going shopping with you! We are lucky and live in farm country. We can get beautiful produce at the Farm Stands and Farmers Markets during the growing seasons. May-October I would say. The price is quite a bit higher here though. My favorite thing to get from Farm Stands in the early fall are huckleberries! They are a wild blueberry that grows in the mountains around here. They are so yummy in baked goods! The price this year jumped up to 22.00 a pound! I only bought 2 pounds. I freeze them in 1/2 cup portions and then use them in baking all year. Things like bananas are about .50 a pound and cream cheese is about 4.00 a pound. That delicious looking bread would be around 5.00 here. Thank you for the fun video!

Wow!! So lucky! Here (Seattle WA, USA) one apple is about $2, and cucumbers are about $1 each. One whole small rôtissoire chicken for me is about $7. My eggs & milk are around $3 each. I had to stop buying beef because it sky-rocketed to $28 for a package from Costco, which is cheaper than the $12 for two patties at the local grocery store. I also don’t buy cereal anymore since the prices went up to about $4/box. I don’t buy nuts of any kind anymore either… the cheapest nuts here that are *not* just peanuts are pistachios for $8 a bag. You had a great shopping haul i would say! I’m jealous lol☺️👏🏼
