Grocery shopping in Cambodia isn't like it is in the west. There are far fewer large grocery stores and supermarkets. Most Cambodians shop at the markets. After living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for over 6 months, I have a bit of a system down. I'll show you what the grocery stores are like, what the markets are like, I'll give you the pros and cons of each, I'll even cost compare to see if the market is actually worth grocery shopping in.
It's Phnom Penh's Aeon Mall Supermarket vs BKK market in the ultimate grocery shopping showdown!

Pro tip with market shopping , wake up and go early. I used to buy 80% of my meat, fruit and vegetables in the market in Cambodia and Vietnam. If you become a regular you will get a little cheaper prices .

@@itchyfeetonthecheap . Same as most local markets in the world. The best meat and veg sells fast early, also fresher. If you live 'there' for a long time and buy from the same people they look after you. Not just 'here is a barang' charge a little more. The market people are missing me. My gf ( future wife) tells me they keep asking " When handsome man come back" . The women love it when I say. " Good morning Miss 'Maneth'. "You look beautiful today". I learnt their names. And a little khmer. Cambodian and Vietnamese people are very friendly. And once you get to know them, sincere as well.

Love shopping at local markets when travelling. Always an eye-opening experience! Wish our farmers markets were cheaper than grocery stores but they’re not. Quality is much better though.

Anyone out there who is in a foreign country and you want to find a certain vegetable or item, just take a photo of the item and then show it to the person. You can even print it out as a photo.

you gotta remember too, about 60-70% of the time at the market you are being quoted an inflated price because you are white. The real prices at market for khmer people are actually a huge difference when compared to the supermarket on all items.

As a Local , supermarket shopping is only for the filthy rich and it usually us GMO products which isn't great. The price is ridiculously high compared to the local especially once you compare it with the local market little bit further from the city. You can bargain them but i suggest you don't need to since you can afford it at a local shop. I find it surprising that people actually buy thing from grocery store and them making profit of it. Most Cambodian only go Aeon to enjoyed the amenity such as Cenima. I come living abroad finding it tough that a Foking trash rice is 2$ per kilo and shopping is not enjoyable as a local market.

Good observation , any dairy product you desire will be very expensive , for example1/2 Gallon of milk is over $4.00 US , a regular jar of peanut butter can go $4.00 US or more , products are imported and the prices reflect that fact , which leads many people to adapt to eating local in an attempt to save money , your rent is going to be much more affordable than back home , so I look at many food prices as a trade off , all in all , still very affordable , hope this helps

Fruit, veggies are cheaper at the market. I've found the meat quality is questionable at open air markets. I mean, I know it gets cooked but it bothers me all the city dust lands on it, hundreds of people walking by coughing, flies landing on it all day. It just grosses me out
