We are apartment hunting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia! After living in Cambodia for a year, we decided to upgrade to a bigger apartment - a 2 bedroom, something with a large outdoor space... We're thinking a renovated traditional apartment is the answer, but it's not that easy. Serviced apartments in Phnom Penh offer a lot of amenities and conveniences. Do you want a pool? Do you want to be on a high floor (to avoid mosquitos and other critters)? Do you want everything taken care of for you so you don't have to go out and run errands in a foreign language?
In this video I'll show you the difference between a serviced apartment and a more traditional renovated apartment. I'll also give you all sorts of tips on how to find the best rental that suits your needs (some of those needs you might not even be aware of).
Here are the agents that helped me find a place!

The serviced apartment - but smaller and on the 10th floor or higher, if possible. Safer in a serviced apartment and for all the reasons you mentioned. The serviced apartments you are looking at are BIG ........way to big for a single male. I would want 40 sq metres or less and higher up, to avoid all Mosquitoes. With global warming they are probably increasing in numbers, in geographical areas they would not have been in previously. That is certainly the case in Australia, where Japanese Encephalitis cases are being found (and infecting people) in areas below the Tropic of Capricorn. The other thing Aussies have to remember is that our Aussie dollar is worth around 30 per cent LESS than the US dollar. So add 30 per cent to any rents you are considering paying.

I absolutely love the third apartment, it reminds me of the place we stayed at in Siem Reap. I miss Cambodia. The lack of pool wasn't too bad though, because Navutu Dreams resort was just down the road, and (at least in 2915, not sure about now) all you had to do was buy a drink at the bar, and you would be allowed to swim in the pool, even if you didn't stay there.

That is a point I was not sure of either? I assumed it was US Dollars, as the rents in Cambodia are quoted in US dollars, as far as I know.

Currently in Thailand and hating the living situation. Arrived about 4 months ago from China where 2 bedroom apartments, a bathroom with walk in shower, kitchen space, and washing machine were the norm. Currently in a small town in central Thailand (long story short job was a bust so stuck here), living in a hotel. Literally, that's about the only "housing" available are hotels outside of the major cities. I've heard Bangkok has some nice apartments, but probably can't do it on an ESL teacher salary. Was doing visa run to Siem Reap and noticed beautiful luxury apartments 5min walk from pub street in downtown Siem Reap 300usd/month. Siem Reap was absolutely wonderful. Very clean and looks like they're still developing.

What agent did you use for the apartment that you guys settled on taking? I think the serviced apartment was the right choice. I'm planning on moving to Cambodia in early August. I am currently living in Bucerias, MX. North of Puerto Vallarta. I'm 68 and I like the one year multiple entry visa that Cambodia offers. I also like how easy and inexpensive it is to travel in SE Asia. I usually used Air Asia when I lived in Phuket. Who do you guys fly with?

I found my first apartment through an agent and lost my $300 deposit as the building manager told me the deposit goes to the agent. So I am very reluctant to use an agent. Or was I just one of the unlucky ones that was "scammed"?
@itchyfeetonthecheap
@itchyfeetonthecheap Жыл бұрын
The deposit is if anything needs to be repaired beyond normal wear and tear after you've moved out. The agent might get the deposit amount as their fee, but that comes from the landlord, not you. The lease should have outlined all of that. Next time just ask them how you get your deposit back when you move out, and check to make sure what they say is outlined in the lease.

When you see the Phnom Penh skyline you’d think there’d be thousands of apartments available since at night most are dark , since they’re empty OR the building hasn’t finished since the developer can’t get sales to generate cash flow. Also China is behind a lot of the development here & money is getting “tight “ to say the least. There is way better value & quality for money in Thailand. $1000 a month in nice areas of Phuket get you something nice. Phnom Penh ….No beaches, shitty streets & not a lot to do in the heat….I’d be going Thailand for better value & lifestyle.
@itchyfeetonthecheap
@itchyfeetonthecheap Жыл бұрын
There's definitely better value out there, but we came to Phnom Penh cause my partner was offered a job here. If you have to go to a major city, I prefer Phnom Penh to Bangkok. It's much smaller and easier to get around. There are less rules, more laid back. Feels more like a small town than a big metropolis.
