I lived in Germany for 6 1/2 years while in the Army at Kaiserslautern. My wife and I worked for a marketing company part time. We stocked the Military grocery store and liquor store. In addition the company had a contract with one of the local grocery stores. We worked hard but had a good time. We did a lot of shopping at local German stores. Much better choice of cheeses and meats. One of the marketing managers working out of the Stuttgart area got reassigned to Japan. Several of us rented a large truck to move him. When we showed up at his apartment most of the local residents showed up and did all the packing, then to top it off took us all to lunch. Have some really great memories.

A tip for grocery stores: You actually bought all the more expensive stuff. The majority of foods is also made by the shop specific brand (Kaufland, REWE, EDEKA etc...) and most of them really live up to the quality of the original brands. There are some exceptions of course, like frozen Pizza e.g. But generally, you can save like 40-50% by looking for the non-brand alternative.

Milch (Rewe) gefunden. :D Also das ist einfach alles dasselbe XD

ArneBergsch I lived in Krefeld (1988) for a year, a friend of mine did all her shopping at the army camp. Her family food shop cost nearly three times the amount than ours did each week. We would also drive into Holland to Venlo on a Saturday. It was worth the half hour drive for the hyper market and the street market. In the market for the equivalent of about £4.50 we could buy a black bin bag full of seasonal fruit and veg. There would be enough there to feed six people for the week. I really do miss some of the foods you could get from Holland and Germany. You see odd things here in the UK now which is good. Miss the bread though!❤️

Americans are easy to recognize. It's mostly the shoes. And the way they are dressed. I can always tell American tourists. The "bread section" you stopped at was just Toast which most people only eat on the weekend as a kind of treat. There should be another section with actual bread (grey, rye, whole wheat and so on). But I would really recommend getting fresh bread from a local bakery. Or try the bread rolls (Brötchen).

what saddened me was that you are in germany and you buy the kind of bread you are used from America. Germany is known all over the world for their breads and you buy regular packaged white bread. ive lived in the US for years and i was astonished that most bread is soft and spongy... no crust. hardly a whole grain. if you are in germany do yourself a favout and eat the bread.

Nestlé is not an American brand. Nestlé is from Switzerland. Just look at the acute accent. It's the same with some other brands, where Americans often claim, that they are truly American. I thought everyone could tell who's American and who isn't. Just like you can look at a person and tell who's German. The cosmetic products, fashion brands, the way the clothes fit, the way a person walks and carry themselves, is all different. You can also tell who's an officer or who's enlisted. Who's an officer wife and kids or enlisted wife and kids. At least we lower ranking people learned to tell. Maybe affluent people never needed to be as observant. Everyone I know can read a person.

just to let you know if you buy "light meat"= you get meat that is full of diphosphate*s, that means chemical stuff that bind water into the meat. so you got less meat but more water... and cheese quality is often measured with the amount of fat, so a light cheese mostly lacks the taste of a normal cheese(if you dont want the calories just eat a little less cheese)
@Hortifox_the_gardener
@Hortifox_the_gardener 8 жыл бұрын
Just avoid the "light" products at any situations. They are over expensive low quality crap full of chemicals and insane amounts of sugar and salt to hide the awful taste of nothing. You safe no calories, you pay more and get less. The same goes for the "vegan/vegetarian aisle" - look carefully! What they try to sell you as fancy vegan fried cheese substitute for ridiculous prices is just something called "substitute/analog cheese" in Germany. A really cheap and disgusting mixture of palm oil fat, water, chems and starch that is put on really cheap frozen convenience products. Or sold for 4€ for two small pieces on dumb people as vegan option.

Like one guy commented already, it's cool to see this all from an american's perspective as a German. Just wanted to give you one little advice about your fridge, if you permit me :-) Ideally, you should put cheeses on the top shelf in the fridge. They last long and don't mind a bit higher temps. Yoghurt products are best stored on the middle shelf. Fish, meat and sausage/salami etc. are the most sensitive concerning storage life, so they should go on the bottom shelf, the coolest. Of course, salads and veggies should go in the lowest drawer compartments. Looking forward to more videos about my country and i'm glad you like it here!

No they are not immune to sugar. Sugar is one of main reasons why there is so much obese people in US. They are trying so hard to avoid fats but actually sugar is much more dangerous. When I say sugar I am talking about table sugar, high fructose corn syrup... Products used as sweeteners in processed food. Carbohydrates in food based on wheat, potatoes... are not so much dangerous because in them there is no fructose.

Oh no the bread :O I hope you use it as substitute for TP or feeding ducks. Even if you are into plain white bread you will find decent stuff as "Weissbrot" from every bakery. You shouldn't miss the full spectrum of awesome bread choices! Step 1: find a traditional bakery that doesn't use prepared flour blends Step 2: try everything they have so you can have a new bread every couple days Step 3: repeat with another bakery when you want to try even more stuff

+Oliver Kurzweg I like that idea! I think its hilarious when people from other countries and cultures comment on this video. For your average American, this "toast" is perfectly acceptable and its what we live off of. Since moving here we do only use it for toast and the occasional PB&J. We have a bakery in our village along with one at Netto that I use frequently now. This video was filmed just a few months after living in Europe, so its been a big change for us!

"germans stare a lot" This is due to the fact you live out in the boonies. people from villages always stare at you which i find extremely irritating ( I think it is due to the fact that villagers lead boring lifes with nothing happening). I am from Hamburg born and raised and I can gurantee that nobody will stare at you in a decent sized city. In fact people will be a lot more open and way less "weird" in cities

It’s interesting how shopping on base cost a lot more than going off base. My husband and I would do both...do our grocery shopping at the commissary and off base here in the States, but that was here in the U.S.. I like the idea with the shopping carts because we live in a huge apartment complex and a lot of our neighbors walk their groceries home from the various near by stores and not take the carts back, so they are out in the apartment parking lot for days sitting there, some times longer. If they had to pay to use one they would be more considerate about taking them back.

Her opening statement is SO TRUE. As much as I like the selection at my local commissary (in this case McDill AFB in Tampa FL) the prices are lousy. The price off base is usually much better. When I was active duty you could not beat the prices (OK smokes in those days were 25 cents) You knew if you were going on payday to plan for a whole day shopping. You showed your ID then you got in line. YOU old timers will remember you got in line and had to walk up and down each aisle even if you did not want to. It was just 1 long line to the exit. Now that the prices have caught up with the outside world it is more like a regular market. PLUS even though in the US you do not pay tax on consumable food in a way you do at the commissary. They charge you a 7% service fee which is supposed to be for up keep and they DO NOT pay the people bagging your food, your expected to tip at the rate of 50 cents per bag unless it is payday or a big holiday then it is recommended you tip at 1 dollar per bag. So needless to say there goes any potential savings you might have gotten. Don't get me wrong because often there are great buys BUT you have to be there on the right day (whenever that is) at the right time

+Dînmagol Kaufland is the full spectrum supermarket with the lowest prices. By far! Of course Aldi and such may be cheaper but they are small scale discount markets. If you actually shop with an open eye looking out for best prices, discounts and products near expiring date (Kaufland is the best for it! Rewe mostly throws stuff into the trash while Kaufland puts it on huge discount. I know what I'm talking about since my father owns a Rewe supermarket) you can get a really decent priced grocery shopping. Sadly the maker of this video did a lot of "don'ts" and end up partly with completely wrong products. Btw: the bread - wtf?! This toast stuff is suited as asswipe for for deeding ducks but not for human consumption!

I would always cut them in half and put a little bit of Emmentaller Swiss cheese its sweet and savory at the same time. I definitely recommend going to a bakery and or the fresh bread section in the store they generally have automatic slicers that you can use and the bread is much better. Germans are required to take 4 years of English in school. If someone (unless they are super old) says "I don't speak English", that means they don't want to interact with you. So say: Entschuldigen Sie bitte. Es tut mir leid. With a small nod forward & down (like a bow with your head). And move on. Once you do that, the next time you encounter them, they may speak to you in English! (This happened to me!)
