Simba is one of the most expensive supermarkets in Rwanda. Local markets such as Kimironko and others are far cheaper than Simba. They also have fresher food. We buy 80% of the things we need from local markets and less than 20% from supermarkets.

As for the juice boxes folks need to bring in manufacturing heavy for the juicing sector. Much of the fresh fruits are exported out of the producing countries to foreigner countries, processed and sent back to the African markets to be sold at marked up prices. If you know FUBU. I am beginning to feel moving to Kigali Rwanda is a pipe dream. With $1500 - 2000 for rent, crazy prices at the grocery store and purchasing a home on a 5 year mortgage plan or cash, what in the world! How are Rwandese doing this? The online tool I used to check a typical household income in Rwanda showed that the salaries are not that much in USD, very little in fact. Not just Rwanda, like Eddy Brown said African salary is typically very low throughout the entire continent even for professionals. Unapologetic Nomads, you guys are doing a fabulous job breaking down reality versus fiction for us. Thank you!
@nukonuko11844 жыл бұрын
Hey, i am a Rwandan and i am going to try to explain briefly. To rent a house with atleast 3 bedroom is around 300$ unfurnished, a nice fully apartment of 2 bedrom can be 400$ (in the city), for grocerry shopping you can spend 70$ in local supermart per month for a single person. And get some snacks and whatever imported things like snacks for 50$ per month (it will depend on you). And how Rwandans own their own house, the majority like to buy their own land where a 30×40 m2 land cost 8k $ depending with the location, and building your own house cost appro 60k $ while buying a house can cost 100k $ so now you know why they prefer building their own house. About the salary the minimum is 350$ and maximum can be 2k $ and most Rwandans like to be employed and having a small business aside like a supermart or Bar. so they dont depend much on their salary. Any question you have i will answer you

@@nukonuko1184 Thank you so so much Black Saint! You have no idea how valuable the information you just gave me is. I will restrategize my plan starting with land 1st first, then start building. Worried about building from overseas though without being on the ground but I think its a great plan. My final planned move date is June 2021 so looks like I got time. The $70 grocery shopping in local supermarkets is sure a big relief! We will have to put the snacks money towards building..lol. We can do without that. What is the average length of time to build a 4 bedrooms house? If I have the build money. Here we can always pick up a second job to generate additional income, or does the bank loan that kind of money? A US bank would not give a loan for foreign assets I do not think. Oh, another quick question, can a foreigner open a bank account there? Yesterday I learned that Tanzania does not allow foreigners to open a bank account until you are a resident, which takes years to achieve so I was like whaaaaaat!!!! Thank you so much for your very helpful answers

In many African countries, people don't just survive on a salary. People are very enterprising and statistics don't quite capture what it really means to live on the continent. Most people earning salaries whether in the private or public sector also have businesses on the side.
