Sobeys is pilot-testing a high-tech shopping cart that allows shoppers to skip the checkout line. But as Richard Southern reports, the grocery store chain insists the ‘smart cart’ isn’t intended to replace cashiers.

Some stores are turning our phones into scanners so we essentially become our own self check out. Sams Club for example has an app called scan and go. As I shop, I scan the products, swipe right to pay, and head towards the exits where staff scans my proof barcode so I can leave. This saves me 15-30 minutes every week. This cart is basically the same thing. The only difference that I see is higher prices being pushed on consumers so the store can have these fancy carts.

In the UK, we have something like this, but it works better than this idea. You carry a scanner with you and you can scan your items as you go, and then all you have to do is put it back and scan your card when you’re done. And the produce weighing machines have barcodes you can also scan. Eliminates the idea of an unsanitary cart or carts having to be cleaned, a lot cheaper, and it doesn’t cost anyone their job because there are actually staff assigned to help you pay when you’re finished. This is basically a more expensive version of it and seems really pointless tbh.

Well for one , personal belongings such as purses or articles of clothing don't belong in a store shopping cart and any merchandise from other stores shouldn't be put in the cart where people's food goes all merchandise from other stores should be either taken home before going grocery shopping or bought afterwards at a later time. Personal belongings cause a health risk due to germs or unwanted pest insects hitching a ride on your clothes.

With prices going up and up almost between every week I’m sure it has more shoppers than myself going for groceries with a budget. I’d be happy with a cart that simply scanned what I put into it to know my exact total with taxes and all included before heading to the till. This way instead of skipping wants on the shelves for needs, I could complete my shopping list and know if I’ve gone over, or if I have that little extra at the end to go back and get that expensive pepperoni I thought I would’t have enough for lol.

the same issue with self check out, a store near me removed them because people were putting expensive produce (like in that case organic cherries) in as bananas (which are dirt cheap) 5lb bananasa is only about $2 where as 5lb organic cherries are about $25 The weight thing doesn’t work

A smart device isn’t really smart if it makes you lazy. I guess a smart cart isn’t supposed to behave that way.

We already have this in the UK. Its called 'scan and shop'. You collect a handheld wireless scanner when you go in (if you want to), then you scan the barcodes and pack the items. You then go and pay at a self checkout.

It's been more than 4 years since I last used a shopping cart. Two good sized reusable shopping bags and I can carry enough groceries for a week.

Won't ever use this and will not shop at a store that does use these.

Smart but also bad for low income areas where this will just get ripped off, ruined, broken, or whatever else.

If Nothing ELSE. I feel like carts should have aisle trackers for items we are searching for @each particular store( or maybe create an app for this) That way cashiers can keep their jobs, and we consumers don't have to annoyingly search for items...we'd have a tracker for the foods we want like we track uber/instacart etc.....🤔

even if it does take cashier jobs away think of how many new positions it'll take to build and maintain these. worth it

Just because it creates new jobs doesn't mean it creates new jobs at the rate it replaces them at.

Jobs for who ? Computer programmers and highly educated people etc Where does that leave others? Without employment . There is going to be a lot of people out of work on social assistance to get by or unemployment. More overload for food banks too. I prefer a regular cart and hope not all stores do this. I can hardly imagine seniors trying to use this to shop . For many it will be a bit intimidating.

@@nameprivate4287 technicians, maintenance, manufacturing, these carts don't just pop out of thin air and take care of themselves. Plenty of good obtainable skilled positions come out of it. More than it takes for one cashier position.

Don't know about America but here in England trollys (or carts) get robbed and pushed down the road with kids and their mates in, so your gonna have to make some smart way to keep these from being the new high tech go kart for us down in England.

We have scan and go in the uk where we have a handheld scanner that we walk around the shop with, and then scan a special barcode at the self service checkout so we don’t need to unpack the shopping bags.

We have self scan machines here, like in the form of a tick phone you pick up at the entrance and use to scan everything. Then just drop it off and pay at a computer. Not sure why you need to build a whole expensive cart for doing basically the same.
