Wonderful tutorial, thanks. You say that the logs must not be more than 2 weeks old, but Ive seen other ´videos that say that the newly cut logs must be stored for 2-4 weeks to allow their resistance to spawn to die out. Please clarify, thanks.

How do you soak the dowel rod bits with a liquid from a syringe?
@presentlensjourneys Жыл бұрын
Can you really leave logs outdoors in winter if you live in a cold place with lots of snow? I thought the mycelium would die at super freezing temperatures. I baked some tiny logs in the oven at low temp to sterilize, inoculated them, and kept them indoors for the cold winter, and hope to soak them in July to force fruiting, but I'm not sure if they require some sort of dormancy. And perhaps I didn't keep them wet enough to survive. Any advice for cold climate log use?

I'm looking at growing mushrooms, my dad has a wood burner and stores short wood logs. My concern is you mentioed that they have to be be innoculated within 2 weeks from cutting from the tree so they don't dry out. My dad has them in storage. can i still take advantage of wood logs in another way? for example buy the plastic mushrooom bags and collect the saw dust instead?

I wonder if the log could be soaked in a mycelium spawn water mix. Getting it into the log everywhere. Cool video. I may try this out myself
@FRESNEL_COOKING_SOLAR_OVENS246 ай бұрын
Its a waste of sterile water and mycelium that goes to contaminated bark, trying to get inside the logs, when you can just drill inside the log every 7-10cm. This is why you also use soy wax, to protect the log being infected. The bark is there to prevent other funghi or pest. So there is no reason to soak them for inoculation.
@skepticalgenious6 ай бұрын
@@FRESNEL_COOKING_SOLAR_OVENS24 oh I think I understand. If I soaked a log. The entire outside would become something else's meal. The wax gives the mycelium the chance. From becoming infected and run over. Am I understanding the methodology better?

What other mushrooms do you recommend to grow on logs besides shiitake
@GroCycleTV9 ай бұрын
You can grow several types of mushroom on logs including Lion's Mane, Oyster, Reishi, Maitake and Chicken of the woods, but they are harder to grow that Shiitake and have preferences for different types of wood. Shiitake's probably the easiest and most resistant to competing organisms when growing on logs. Check out our guide on our website grocycle.com/how-to-grow-mushrooms-on-logs-the-ultimate-guide/

Thanks. Can you reuse the logs and re inoculate?
@FRESNEL_COOKING_SOLAR_OVENS246 ай бұрын
You only inoculate once!!! 😂 Why would you do that again if they are colonized and produce untill wood is finished? What do you want to reinoculate? A spongy finished wood that is at the end after producing 6 years of mushrooms? They keep producing as long as is energy inside and still has weight. 😂😂😂

Hey Grocycle Team, Awesome videos and even more awesome resource for the knowledge behind all of it. A little question since you are growing both microgreens and mushrooms have you tried using the waste of the microgreens after harvesting to grow mushrooms ? Probably mixing them with a bit of fresh substrate the mushrooms should have enough nutrients to grow and it would drastically reduce the waste right ?

Yes you can! We have experimented with it a bit and found it to be a good substrate for Oyster mushrooms. You can treat it in a similar way to straw: shred it, pasteurise it and then mix in your spawn.

You want fresh anyway so I'd (guess) no. Emerald ash borer is the culprit , but possibly , the beetle just is the vehicle for the real killer a mold or fungus , like the elm beetle situation.

If you're trying to be environmentally friendly, beeswax and soy wax are probably better than paraffin wax. Both beeswax and soy wax are basically types of fat, so they'll easily biodegrade. Whereas paraffin wax is more similar to the plastic that milk jugs are made of.
