I live in Groningen, I'm 43 and I don't even have a drivers license. Nothing against it, just never got around to it. In this city with rain sensors on traffic lights to give green light to cyclists more often when it rains and cyclists from all directions get that green light at the same time without turning into one big pileup. In a country with good public transport. Who needs a car.

Having lived in Groningen for quite a few years I can say it is indeed a great place to cycle, but many other places and cities in the Netherlands are also great for that.

Utrecht here. We’re more bicycle friendly than Amsterdam, but Groningen beats us. I don’t own a car. Never did. Most of my transport and travels are by bicycle and public transport. But when I need a car, there are about 20 shared cars available right away within walking distance. I just came back from a car ride 1 hour ago.

17:09 this bridge was in a collision some years ago. The bridge deck isn't there anymore, they want to build a new bridge. But this is a lengthy process. But they made a bike crossing.

I am not in The Netherlands, but I haven't had a car for over 30 years (and counting). My bikes are my only personal means of transportation, year round. Today they forecast heavy rain, so I take the tram instead, to meet a customer and get groceries afterwards. Easy, cheap and, most of all, possible!

I live in Groningen, so I do recognise what you are saying. The trainstation is under construction right now, it will have a huge hike park underneath the station. To be honest I find going by bike a lot of times really stressful because there are so many bikes and especially on the crossroads, where we are all supposed to go at once, it can be scary. It is very busy in rush hours.

Infrastructure for cars , highways (from 6 to 16 lanes) tunnels, bridges, big area's of green space, even in the beautiful hilly parts of the country is very distinct as it all works together. But you don't see that on you-tube.....

The amount of people per household is an average of 2,1. Meaning there's only just over 2 people per home. The average of cars per household is just but barely 1,1 per household. Meaning on average of all households share one car with two people. (Since 2020, hasn't changed since). This also included the children, as most kids don't "get" a car like in America could happen. My sister had a car she got from her grandpa (he could no longer drive), and she was pretty much the only one in her university. So 9/10 times she wasn't even driving her own car because all her friends borrowed it. I didn't have a car until I was 31 years old. My SO is currently taking driving lessons because he never needed it, he's also 31. Also in 10 years it got better. I think we've embraced it even more and more since. Whenever people have a job they can commute to by bicycle it's THE best thing. The job comes second, getting there by bicycle is the dream!

we are the biggest Bycle country indeed, 99,1% owns a bike, but in Denmark 80% owns a bike and Germany around 75% so those are pretty big countries in bycles and biking lanes aswell. I guess this video is a little bit older, Gronginingen City has around 206.000 inhabitants now instead of 190.000

I live in a nearby village of Groningen, i even got my driving lessons there. And the exam. It's a hell for cars, but i get it it's a bike friendly city. Groningen is also a big public transportation hub. There are multiple trains and busses come together there. Also you can park your car at special parking places outside the city center, and travel with the bus to the center for a small fee, it's cheaper than parking the car in a parking garage in the city center. And yes I will go into the city center with the car and park as close to my destination. So I can dump my shopping stuff in the car an go shopping again with my hands free of stuff.

Just a point of attention: Rule for a bicycle trailer: let children sit in a bicycle trailer! That is with their legs in the bicycle trailer! Realize as the driver that you are sitting behind the bicycle trailer. Your child is always the first to be hit on this bike. That is how you let children sit in the bicycle trailer with their legs in the box/ trailer!

When I was in the US I was staying with a family in a suburb living area. What stunned me that the whole area was just housing. Nothing but Long wide streets and houses for miles around but no shops, no bars, café's, restaurants anywhere close. So you'd have to go out by car to go to get anything, nothing was close by so you would take a bike. Why would you not allow shops and other businesses in the streets where you live and have them close by where they also serve as meeting points and make an area more liveable. I now live in Groningen and have been living there for 30 years and it's only got better at giving space to cycling and walking and enjoying live together.

The comment about not being able to use the excuse that you are late because the bridge was open, reminds me of a song we always sang at school. It was about a girl called Katrieneke who always was late, and always used the same excuse: mijn wekker was stuk, en de brug stond open, mijn band was lek, dus ik moest gaan lopen. Translated she said: my alarm clock was broken, and the bridge stood open, I had a flat tire, so I had to go on foot. Whenever I come across an open bridge, i always sing this chorus inside my head.

My city! Great great city. Quite an old video by the way. In 2024 it almost has 250.000 citizens. Those Road-block poles are not everywhere in or around the city. Just some streets, or just at particular times. With this whole circulation plan its organized well. You just see sometimes a German car in the middle of the centre and they're are like "How did I get here, and how do I get out of here?!" :D. Nowadays they even blocked the busses from the city centre.

Okay they might have started the plans in '77, but i was born '78 in Groningen and in my teen years the cars and busses could still get to the city center easily, around my later teen years and early 20's it started getting a lot more difficult for cars, so the plans might have started in '77 but it's bullshit that it was difficult for cars to get in. Do love the city itself tho, city center nah dont go there anymore, it's too busy/crowded and even tho its awesome that there is no cars or buses anymore, the thing they forgot is that we have people that cant walk, bike anywhere for long distances...those people can barely get to the city center anymore if at all, it's a shame. I'd rather go to Haren, got everything there and less able people can get there too. But the city all around is nice, i don't own a car, and do everything by bike or legs, or if I don't feel like biking or walking i use the bus and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Since we never travel outside of our hometown (pop. 180,000) we don't need a car. Just buy proper rain gear. With the price you pay for that you can travel more miles than with the petrol you buy for the same price. And even when you cycle in near proximity to cars there isn't as much chance of getting run over, because car drivers here are also cyclists. In the US many car drivers see cyclists as inferior to themselves.
@g-o-n95089 күн бұрын
Groningen may be a cyclists city, but with a downside if you are a pedestrian. The cyclists stop for nobody. And when you are in a wheelchair the parked bikes everywhere sometimes are barriers unable to overcome.
