Here I show and explain what groovy play exactly is, and how bass players can practice with a metronome to improve it.

I come here to help my left hand piano playing. Bass players are groovy and this helped. I'm also playing the ukulele since I couldn't play the guitar nor the 3/4 bass since I have serious shoulder problems. In case you want to have help with your low back I have a video for exercises to stabilize and strengthen the pelvic girdle, and they take 30 seconds. There are also techniques for shoulders and hands. Oh My Aching Bach.

I never looked for a definition of the groove, but if someone would ask me that, I would say that the groove is achieved when a player is capable to play exactly on the grid, but plays a little out of the grid intentionally. Great video btw!

" nice" i learned something today👌thankyou. im 63 & taught myself by ear from age 7. i still cant read music nor done 1 lesson in my life. whether it be bass or guitar i believe groove is a personally combined syncopated "feel" of timing + string "strike type" (slap, tap or picked) + fret pressure relative to the flow & feel of the song rather than perfectly timed bland scale movements

Hi Tatiana, often out of laziness I practise with youtube drum loops, but you are absolutely right that the metronome is essential (even if a bit boring)

Thank you for this video. I subscribed to your channel because of it. There is some discussion in comments below that playing ON the beat of a metronome is not groovy playing. I agree with that statement, but I'm not sure that is precisely your point. A bassist can play with a straight feel or a swing feel. S/he can lock in with the drummer on the 1 & 3 of the bass drum or the 2 & 4 of the snare drum. S/he can play "in the pocket". S/he can play with syncopation, or come in just before the beat, or just after the beat. S/he can play an anacrusis at the beginning of a song or song part. Whatever the case, a bassist needs to be precise with respect to the song's tempo (timing). And THAT'S where practicing with a metronome is so valuable. As Nick Mason, Pink Floyd drummer, said: A band is made up of a Drummer and a Bassist with additional novelty acts. We need to get it right.

This is not good advice. Groove is the opposite of what this video says it is. Groove isn't playing notes on the clicks of a metronome. Groove is when your notes *don't* line up perfectly on the grid. Groove is all about pushing or pulling some notes while preserving the overall tempo. It's not about robotic play, and it's not about changing tempos. If you want to practice groove, for sure use a metronome to keep overall time, but play with the precise timing of each note you play. Hesitate for a bit to build tension. Rush a note or a section to add some frenetic energy. And (in general) come back and land right on the one to keep in sync with the rest of the band.

I’m afraid what you say doesn’t work for a band. These things are really good for classical musicians, but they don’t need to be groovy.

I don't think the takeaway is about playing ON the clicks of the metronome when gigging or playing in your home studio, I think it's about precision. Yes, groove is often about tasty playing just behind the beat or just ahead of the beat, but it still needs to be precise with respect to a song's tempo. Also, there might be a slight translation issue, since English is obviously not her first, primary language. We might also say "in the pocket", for example, or "lock in with the drummer". Lock in on the 1 & 3 bass drum for rock songs or the 2 & 4 snare drum for reggae songs, for example. We might play with a straight feel, or a swing feel. Lots of different possibilities for a bassist to explore. But no matter what, precision with respect to the song's tempo is a critical skill for a bassist. No matter what words we use, practicing with a metronome is time super well spent. So, I gave her high marks for this video, and I sub'd her channel.
