Oh my I hate to break it to y’all but this time was maybe a little nicer for you then let’s say anyone who’s not like a white man. I’m sure everyone’s gonna act like I’m exaggerating or whatever but I mean is it really even possible to dispute what African Americans were going through in America at this time? Practically the ENTIRE audience of white women are visibly DISGUSTED, at this little dark boy singing a song on national TV, they’re laughing and snickering and sneering it’s VILE, and then with what ended up happening to Frankie and COUNTLESS other entertainers at the time. I mean people like Judy garland were nothing but abused and had their lives absolutely ruined by these studios, the shit girls like her, Marilyn Monroe etc had to face is just imaginable as a man. I know I can’t picture myself having to deal with not being cast in movies or being overworked and treated like shit Bc I didn’t sleep with a director. And you’d have to be aggressively naive to think that didn’t happen every day back then, it happens NOW even with how much things have changed for women.

albert hall explained this after the show to a reporter. he needed glasses to see and one of the lights was creating a glare they asked him to take them off. he was talking to just a blur and groucho just kept riding him till the audience was frantic but he never saw a thing. if you watch the entire episode youll see at the end he has his glasses returned to him.

Benny was great at this as well. Deliver a great line or if the other person delivers the line.....let it sit there. The non-verbal reaction (facial expression) is almost as hilarious as the line itself.

If you watch the full episode of this, you get the distinct impression that Mr Albert Hall, despite his odd mannerisms and speech delivery, is a very nice man indeed. He's very polite and appreciative of his fellow guest, Mrs June French, who despite being just 21 and an office 'gofer', is intelligent and is the one with all answers, and she wins them the game. Incidentally, Albert passed away in August 1964, in California, and was buried in Seatle, WA.

I can't tell you how many times I've watched this, and continue to do so at various intervals through-out the week. As someone who grew up watching all the comedic greats of the classic B&W era, I can tell you that we would've loved seeing shorts with Mr. Albert Hall in them. He will always symbolize one of the great missed opportunities that the film world could've capitalized on and benefited from. We can only imagine what his career would've been like. Thanks to Groucho for making this a moment in time, one that we can revisit again and again.

I'm only 30 years old. I learned about You Bet Your Life and The Marx Bros as a 8 year old by watching reruns on TV . The Marx Brothers comedy is shockingly modern. It's timeless as evidenced by the fact that it was still being shown on television when I was 8 years old. I much prefer the old TV shows and movies to most of what we have now.

They also cleaned up the type and sorted them back into the California type cases...the also handled LEAD, as the Linotype casting machines produced type cast from lead ...which Albert Morris recycled after the press run to be melted down for the next day's job.

When i was a child in our neighborhood there was a man just like him; he had the same facial expressions and body gestures for saying even ordinary things, and he always laughed loud. even when we said hello to him he'd automatically make facial expressions and body gestures just like this guy.he also had a big nose like WC Fields and big huge hands. he was a chain smoker too with the most low pitched voice, louder than lions. and his eyes opened like train head lights. he seldom yawned, and always paid complete attention to every word you'd say to him. he was the strangest yet the most interesting man I've ever met.

This one is very funny from the very first moments. My jaw dropped. I am surprised that Groucho could get away with mimicing the guest, "and how do they make MON-EY?!". That's getting personal. Mr. Hall looks like he was aware he himself was a caricature, and fair game. He was crazy-looking in his conversation with Groucho but normal and genial with his partner guest

Yes, I agree with you. For all of Groucho's (well deserved) reputation for insulting people, he was almost never so directly insulting to one of the "ordinary people" guests as he was here with Mr. Hall. If Hall hadn't been such a good sport about it, it might not have come off as funny as it does.

Classic! Yes, a master of puns so quick they can be missed. Another one I particularly love that most of the audience missed was on his hilarious What's My Line 1959 appearance, when he asked a guest "Are you a corrupt politician?" He then says: "Or am I being redundant?" Few have such genuine, razor sharp wit.
