I agree with your opinion... it may have been a put on or it may not who knows. Since there was no internet, it makes sense that the audience would contact the Groucho show and demand equal time. And yes it makes perfect sense that there would be a lot of women who would be turned on by that old-fashioned approach to " the home". Mind that at least half of the women in that audience were born in the 1800s

I would like to meet H G Morton. . The guy has such stupid ideas that he is funny. The guy is probably a racist too. I would trap him. He says women should lose the right to vote. Then I would ask him who he thinks should not have the right to vote, a white woman or a black man. If he says neither then I got him. By not allowing women to vote then I assume it ok for men to vote by his definition but he just indicated black men should not vote either. Then I would tell him to make up his mind and he couldn't. The idiot would be trapped.

Well, both make the mistake of painting with a very broad brush. In my view, we are all given talents and abilities and certain types of smarts that make each of us unique. However, ideally, I believe God created most men to have a leadership role in relationships. However, that isn't ALWAYS the case, and that's all right. Every individual is different and every couple is different. Men and women should respect each others' roles and work together to make a wonderful life together rather than being at odds with each other. Mutual respect and a willingness by both partners to sacrifice is the key.

I don't understand why someone would turn down a chance for the big money even if you lose you still get $500.
@justplainbrad7713
@justplainbrad7713 3 жыл бұрын
Why would people give up 6 months wages, for a chance to lose half? $1000 is not much by 2021 thinking/monetary value, but to someone in 1959, it represented 6 months wages. Most people did not have $1000 in the bank, and "a bird in hand... " $1000 in hand, is worth more than $10,000 you might never win. Today, would you gamble half of your yearly salary $9,000, on a small chance of winning $45,000/$90,000? I'd bet you would not, unless you had a nest egg hidden somewhere. These people didn't. In 1959, $1000 was a lot of money, and people would rather be safe than sorry...that was a prevailing feeling at a poor time in history. Remember the era, as most of these people just lived through "WWII", the Korean War, and were getting into Vietnam; and all of their parents just lived through the "Great Depression", which destroyed many...so money was no joke to them, and they didn't gamble with a better life, unless they had extra cash to lose...few did. Then Today 1959 ----2021 $500 = $4,500 $1,000 = $9,000 2,000 = $18,000 5,000 = $45,000 10,000 = $90,000 = 5.20 years wages The min. wage was $1.00/hour = $8/8 hour day = $40/40 hour week. $160/month and $1920/year.

And after YBYL, HG Morton and his society disappeared into the mists of history. Interestingly, if you Google "Society for the Domination of Women" without his name, Google interprets "of" as a synonym for "by" and pulls up links for stories on various matriarchies around the world, on matriarchies in theory and matriarchies in general. If I hadn't read the introductory notes, I would have interpreted the name of the organization the same way Google did. I'll let someone with a degree in psychiatry or psychology decide if there was any deeper meaning to him choosing a name that could (and arguably more likely would) be interpreted in a way totally contrary to his goals and beliefs. Anyway, Morton left me feeling colder than the anti-freeze salesman did.

You folks need have a drink and relax. This guy is a transparent put on; and he even has a hard time avoiding laughing at himself. He is deliberately chosen the most absurd ideas to promote and nobody is taking him seriously except the humourless viewers. He appears in two episodes. The first episode got an enormous response by mail from women; most of whom stated they had fallen in love with him. In his second appearence he is teamed with a woman who is prepared to vigorously retort his ideas. At no time does he display any "attitude" towards her, and, in fact, he is extremely cordial without any hint of chauvanism. Of course it is the folly of the time that one can just arbitrarily judge human behavior from a different era and assume some false sense of moral superiority because you don't understand the humor of the day. It's a put on. It's a parody of a discussion that was beginning to take stage. And it's funny. Obviously the name SODOWOW and H.G. Morton are just made up. The woman advocate got in her shots, and it didn't bother him a bit. One needs to be observant of human behavior, not obsess on dialogue. But then this is an age when we are systematically destroying anything that resembles human behavior, including humor.
@HoffNL
@HoffNL 3 жыл бұрын
You wrote some interesting philosophy. I even cannot find such a society on the internet archives. He indeed might have been a put on. Groucho also mentioned him in his autobiography “Groucho and me”. And curiously enough, most of the female letter writers indicated they had fallen in love with him! He must have been married after that 😉
@JustVinnyBlues
@JustVinnyBlues 3 жыл бұрын
@@HoffNL I'm just judging the behavior. He and that woman co-contestant got along really cordially and looked like they were having fun. And he did not relate to her as if he really was an advocate for those extreme ideas. He actually deferred to her a bit. It was entertaining. If the audience took him seriously they probably would not have been laughing.

I don't doubt he was a put-on; Groucho's show wasn't the 100% spontaneous ad-lib fest it was marketed as. A lot of off-the-cuff things did happen, and Groucho was definitely a master of the improvised quick comeback, but some segments were definitely set up for him.

H.G. Morton is a "take-up". It's a parody which exaggerates a position with the purpose of illuminating that position's flaws and satirizing that position. Part of the danger of assuming you can look back sixty years and judging people without any understanding of the vernacular of the time. Today, we are obsessed with taking everything literally and passing judgement, whether it's warranted or not. This obsession has destroyed parody, satire and self effacing humor in general.
