Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life

Highlight of this show is definitely Velma Zimmerman, amateur country singer, who sings "Mama Don't Allow. . . " with some nutty sound effects incorporated. This, typically, inspires Groucho to spontaneous dancing.
COUPLE #1: Marian Myron / Edward Rademacher, mayor of Calipatria, California (a city located 184 feet below sea level)
COUPLE #2: Bebe Blake, professional songwriter / Jim Moran, publicity man who "sold an ice box to an eskimo"
COUPLE #3: Velma Zimmerman, amateur country singer / Donald Douglas, Jr., vice president of Douglas Aircraft Company (son of company president/founder)

Amazing! The most uplifting tv shows ever, and to think that we are only lucky enough to see them now in the UK thanks to KZbin, the uploader, and the genius who decided they were worth saving. I thank them all!

To bad we don't have this kind of game show today. I enjoy this show. Groucho was always wonderful with the contestants. Love Groucho and all the Marx brothers. They were fun to watch. McDonald's company was founded by Donald SR. in 1921 and ceased operations in 1967. Very interesting and important company

Don Douglas was my mother's boss and personal friend. Eventually she became his business manager, then she became corporate secretary of a geothermal energy company he started in the 1980s. I have a portrait of him and his family in my home. My mom used to go with me to his house, where she would visit with him and his wife and discuss business. He was so handsome. My mom never mentioned his appearance on Groucho's show. I wish she were alive to watch it with me.

I loved watching their movies as a kid, but my brother thought the Three Stooges were superior. It's kind of like the argument between Star Trek and Star Wars. The Marx Brothers and Star Trek were more clever, but 3 Stooges and Star Wars had more "action" than witty dialogue. I enjoy all four, but I will always be a "Marxist Trekkie" first!

To understand the genius of Groucho watch at 13:15 where he summarizes the previous guest from the 'lowest town in California'. He warps and twists the narrative into an absurdist image. "A hole in the ground without a flag pole where the Governor comes every few weeks to crack a few bad jokes and leave."

I loved the style of 40s and 50s dresses, especially the ones worn on "What's my Line" by Arlene and Dorothy. I'm hooked on watching those shows now, and recently I saw one of the ladies wearing a little black dress with rhinestone trim and a silk chiffon cape, and recognized it as identical to my Mom's favorite date night sexy dress. I'm 58, and I still have her dress! I wore it to a semi-formal event in 1978 and got rave compliments. No one seemed to know it was circa 1960. Mom hinted a few times that that bombshell dress lead to my conception. That grossed me out as a teen, but now I'm old and missing my loving parents it's a sweet memory. Mama was a cute little dish, she got mistaken for Ann Sheridan when she was young.

These shows are a living history. For we who are Jewish, this was the 1st time we saw and heard someone on television who never hid their culture. As a retired teacher, few 24 minute lessons are as insightful into the living lessons of 65 years ago and fewer still are as wildly funny.

I thought that was true, too, because the (dwarf) planet is named Pluto and I thought they used Roman names for the planets. But wikipedia says that, while Hades was the name for the god, Pluto was a euphemism for him and meant "giver of wealth". Eventually Pluto came to be used for the god and Hades mainly for the underworld itself. The Roman equivalent for the god Pluto/Hades is apparently "Dis Pater", which is thought to mean "rich father".
