Dear Ian Staples, Yes! This is now one of the prime tourist attractions available on the IOM. The amount of enthusiasm and dedication to this railway by society members shows in the quality of the restoration of the line, the rolling stock, the buildings and their views on future development. Certainly a great little railway! Thank you for your interesting comment. Very best wishes WooWooMad.

Remember walking riding the old track bed whilst staying at Howstrake holiday camp just across the bay in the early 1960's when we used to come across from England for the old Manx Grand Prix in early September. Seem to remember that beyond the your buffer stops there were remnants of the old animal enclosures on a ledge cut into the cliff face. Howstrake was an internment camp in WW2, but long gone when I returned for a visit in 1980's. Your railway looks immaculate and the stock magnificent. I seem to remember reading that you were building a replica of 'Polar Bear' one of the original locos. Great video

Dear Helen Follows, Many thanks for the interesting and complimentary comment. The Groudle Glen is now one of the highlight visits of the Isle of Man as it shows narrow gauge railways to the very best. Do have a look at the very interesting website for the railway as it describes the building and maintenance of locomotives and the activities of the members of the society. Thanks again for the great comment. Very best wishes, WooWooMad.

It truly is a great visit and a 'must visit' for all the family. It's going to be great when we can all get out again and can visit all these great places. Fabulous video. "Annie" is just about the cutest steam engine I've ever seen. And "Lime Kiln Halt" is just about the cutest little station. I hope to ride on this line some day and also sample the scones. Greetings from Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

Dear x yz, Thanks for commenting. The steam railways and tramways on the Isle of Man certainly are very special. It is particularly interesting as most of the equipment used all comes from a age long since disappeared. Definitely worth the visit if you are into railways. Very best wishes to you and your channel, WooWooMad.

Beautiful engine and carriages...everything looks brand new including the track and the buildings! Those varnished wood cars made us think of the fine woodwork on yachts in the olden days. Lovely tour, also, but we were fascinated by the equipment!

Dear Betty M, Thank you very much for your interesting comment. This railway has been the centre of a major refurbishment by enthusiasts in recent years. It has been a joy to see, as the track, buildings and rolling stock have been restored to the highest standard. There is also a brand new locomotive being built that is almost completed. Do look at the very interesting web site of the Groudle Glen railway as it is interesting to read about the progress that has been made. Thanks again for commenting. Very best wishes to you, WooWooMad.

Decades ago, during a trip to England, my host arranged a trip to the Isle of Man Railway Weekend. At the time, I was impressed that an island roughly 10 x 30 miles in size should have antique tram service connecting the east coast towns, the official Isle of Man Railway with three original Beyer Peacock locomotives, and an electric mountain-climbing tram up Mt. Snaefell (and the best impression of an arctic storm I'd ever experienced in May). I never heard of Groudle Glen, nor of any of the other rail attractions a quick Google search tells me are now in operation! What an amazing little place. I'd love to go again, but it's a long trip from Vancouver, even without "the plague."
@WooWooMad
@WooWooMad 4 жыл бұрын
Dear carmium, Thanks for the great comment. Well, . . . we love Vancouver as my wife's friend has a husband who owns a 2-6-0 loco and runs it in a park in the city. In the British Isles the preservation scene is now truly enormous with brand new steam locos being built all over the place. The extension of preservation lines is also happening everywhere too. Have a look at newbuildsteam.com/ this will give you an idea of what is going on over here. Also have a look at the P2 site, this loco is gianourmous! After the 'plague' I expect we will return to Canada. I have video of most of the activity on the IOM including the horse tram, but it is just a case of finding the time to edit all this into something acceptable. Great to hear from you and thanks for the interesting comment. Very Best Wishes, WooWooMad.

@@WooWooMad A 2-6-0? That would be operating on the "Burnaby Central Railway." It's quite the "layout" as we'd say in model railroading! Alas, here in a land where railways are nowhere near as common as in the British Isles, preserved railways (or parts thereof) are extremely rare. Locally, there is the rail museum in Squamish, but the beloved Royal Hudson that used to steam to that town and back with a full rake of coaches, has not run for many years. We are a land of skiing and mountain biking now, and that seems to be what people come for! It is a beautiful part of the world, but could use a few more passenger trains. Thanks for your most interesting reply!

Dear Dave Cooper, I believe that most of the access to all the views are still possible. However, at the time I was more involved with the run-round and the scenes that were needed for the video. One thing that I did acquire knowledge of was the superb railway cafe at that end of the line. Do have a look at the very interesting web site for the railway, lots of interesting information on there and access to the various views may be better described. Thanks for the interesting comment. Very best wishes, WooWooMad.

Dear J B, Ah! Yes, I do know this, However in my experience of travelling I would expect there are a lot of folk out there who would think the Isle of Man is an isolated island in the south pacific. It all just sort of helps the vast KZbin viewing public to sort of locate the video. I had exactly the same problem with Jersey. If you search Jersey you end up with all the American New Jersey sites. Thanks all the same for the reminder. Very best wishes to you and your channel. WooWooMad.

Dear Tomasz Pienkowski, I think that you may well be correct, The fellow to ask is the guy in the carriage on the left of the thumbnail of the video as he built the entire loco himself. Some achievement eh! Also since this video has been made the railway has constructed a new loco and has plans for another. Do see the Groudle Glen Website as all this is so interesting. Stanier’s favourite whistle was the Caley Hooter introduced by Dugald Drummond to give Caledonian Rly locomotives a unique sound. They became the standard whistle on Stanier’s designs.

What was that at 7:18?
@WooWooMad
@WooWooMad 5 жыл бұрын
Dear Chris Coleman, Thanks for your very observant inquiry. I included the scene from about 7.00 to about 7.20 for the narrow gauge folk in the UK as some will probably be aware that there was a big challenge about the relaying of this part of the route. The solution was to relay a new route parallel to the old route inland of the cliff edge. It was thought sensible to leave the old track in situ to help with the stability of the earth. Thanks very much for the interesting observation. Very best wishes to you and your channel. WooWooMad.

Dear Chris Coleman, Ah . . . I hear what you mean. Yes, they appear to have fitted this crazy little whistle. I don't know why it was fitted, but it certainly gets the attention of folk on the platform. There must be a reason for this addition and if you manage to get any insight into this please let WooWooMad know. Maybe someone on some of the other Websites or local KZbin channels know something about the choice of fitting this rather odd sounding whistle. Yes, I am curious now . . . ! Very best wishes to you and your channel. WooWooMad.

Dear John Penny, Oh ! . . . I think that you are going to ask those guys about all those kind of details. But I do have to say that the breaking was very distinctive when riding and it did gave the sense of security needed. I am sure that the systems incorporated in the vehicles are to the necessary public service requirements as the railway does have a great professional ethos. Very best wishes to you and thank you for your interesting comment. WooWooMad.
