staying hydrated in the summer heat is a very important skill. The human body will require lots of water to combat the high temps of summer and to keep body functions working properly. In this video i will talk of how i use a 2 canteen base system to keep my water intake up in extreme weather conditions of high heat with high humidity. i will also cover why i carry a large 2 quart military canteen for cook needs while on the trail. thank you for watching my video and please check out my ground pounder playlist .
n this video i will talk about how to beat the summer heat when we go camping. i know thats sounds simple but in a way it is and in a deeper way it very complex. at the root our core temp of our bodies the the thing we really need to guard against over heating. when the out side temp is well into the 90's and the humidity is also very high our bodies simply cannot cool very well. To deal with this we have to get creative and use the environment as best we can to limit our time in the highest heat. the first step is to understand we can not beat the heat so to speak at best all we can do is adapt to it. so we start our high early in the morning. the magic hours are 6 am until around 9 am. that is when the day time temps are at the lowest.
we take advantage and start our hike at 6 we push hard until say around 9 am . by that time we should have made 7 or 8 miles and be close to our final campsite for the day. now from 10 am until 3 or 4 pm we rest in the shade and allow the high sunlight to pass . around 5 or so we walk on to our final camp site and then set up cook our only hot meal of the day and rest.

I'm a Marine, served during Operation Iraqi Freedom. We had access to bottled water, so I reserved my canteens for a possible NBC attack so I would have something to drink while wearing a gas mask. As for staying hydrated, when I notice that I have a dry throat and lips a little parched I take a swing of water and swish it around my mouth a few times slowly drinking it. Once the throat is moistened it's time to drink.

A couple of observations; I use two canteens with one of them frozen as I leave the house. That one will stay cool half a day even in lower Alabama. I survived a summer at Ft. Benning that way. Second, if you are close enough to an enemy for him to hear water slosh in your canteen he already knows where you are!

Not necessarily lol I was an airborne long range recon ranger, twice I have had the enemy close enough to urinate on my ghillie suit. lol As to the canteens I carried one on each hip and two on the Alice ruck (large) or in it depending on mission and combat load. You pretty much mentioned most of the tricks that I know. I will say that the two quarts make great pillows, cool water in the summer and add warm water when it is cold make them very comfortable. Also if you have an ear or tooth ache. Put water as hot as the canteen will handle then lay on the or hold it against the side that hurts usually helps wonders.

Great video. OMG, I had one of those 2qt up until I got married and left my Alice pack at my father's house. Things that pop in your head when watch these videos. Thanks LOL I only remember old scout canteens turned into shingles for a common area camp ground. Nothing special, more artistic than anything. Every time I saw it I was reminded what my grandfather told me about canteens. "There are no bad canteens, just canteens that need TLC. Learn to fix what is broken and learn what they need (TLC) and they will out last you." Come to think of it, he said that about a lot of things. He was an old WW2 engineer and put the jury in jury-rigged. I still have a few canteens that broke from age and abuse, but I will get to fixing them eventually. LOL

I’ve switched to a nalgene cantene and a grayl too, can’t beat it. Up here in the sierra nevada mountains it can be in the 90’s but the lakes and streams are quite cold with water temps in the 50’s. Hydrating with cool water from a grayl is about as good as it gets in the backcountry.

Rivers and creeks down here in the South for the most part have a lot of sediment stirring around in them. You have to get up in the Smokey Mountains before you start seeing cold clearer water. I like those Nalgenes also. Especially the single walled stainless steel ones with the adjustable cap tether.

To add insult to injury; a lot of the rivers are in steep ravines you have to down hike into just to get to the fresh water. The good news is that that water is cold enough to help deal with heatstroke if you don't mind a dip. Most folks concern themselves with hypothermia; but hyperthermia can kill a body just as quickly; and i find it fascinating people aren't tuned into it as much as they should have.

Once again, outstanding!💪 I am constrained to have to walk everywhere in Caribbean coastal heat. Sometimes I walk 5 miles each way to get groceries, though most times is around 3. I take along an old Coleman plastic bottle, 1 qt. and hydrate before going out, in spite of drinking 4 cups of diuretic black coffee, no sugar.🤗 I'll drink the bottle one way on most trips. An important aspect is that I have learned to pace myself, so even with a 15 lb small pack and four grocery bags I don't drip when sweating, even at 3:00 PM. I am 5'9", 230 lbs and 59 years old. I understand a lot of people like the Greyl however, as a water quality professional, I distrust the concept of having mixed ion exchange resins in one cartridge. The Sawyers are just one medium and can be backwashed. That's a *big* advantage over the Greyl. Big time. I am working on estimating my carry load given the dangerous & evil times ahead.* A sturdy medium pack is around 5#, 4qts of water plus containers say 10#. More than 95% of my walks are on sidewalks and pavement becauseof living in a small city. I can go back to 200# comfortably, which means I could carry a 50-60# pack on pavement. Make that half for wilderness mountains, like a deuce and a half!
@philw8049
@philw8049 2 жыл бұрын
Wondered if you would explain that “mixed ion exchange” bit? I have been considering getting a Greyl and in fact had decided after watching this to bite the bullet and get one. Then I read this and you caught my interest. I currently have a Sawyer squeeze but was considering the Greyl for simplicities sake. I was curious about the backwashing of the Greyl, don’t know how or even if they can be.
@donpaco8163
@donpaco8163 2 жыл бұрын
@@philw8049 There are two types of exchange resins: positive and negative. Positive resins have a negative charge and vice versa. The resins come in tiny beads and as water flows through them positive and negative ions (impurities) are removed. As an example, the Brita pitcher filters operate like so, with mixed positive/negative resins and some activated charcoal. In an ultrapure water setup there are separate filter tanks containing just positive or negative resins, with a mixed bed (containing positive and negative resins) always used as a last step called polishing. In a Brita or similar pitcher filter the water fed is tap water which has already been clarified, disinfected and treated, so the filter acts as a polisher. When outdoors in the wilderness the first step should be to clarify the water. To date I have not seen any video of someone using aluminum sulfate to clarify the water. The correct term is flocculation which consist of the coagulation of suspended coloidal sized particles which will never settle. That's why the military tablets are called chlor floc. I don' t see any reason why there would be an expiration date on the flocculating properties of those tablets. The chlorine will lose potency, though. Mechanical filters always need backwashing with clear water after x amount of input vs output pressure loss. The Sawyer filters with a backwashing srynge and tube are superb and that's exactly why they are so popular with disaster relief agencies. Some friends of mine who had a church gave me one after hurricane Maria. All resin exchange beds will become exhausted when all the exchange sites are used up. However, the bed fails way before theoretical saturation due to a phenomenom known as channelling. Resin beds must be constantly monitored for channeling. I don't wish resins in a filter for survival. That's just my opinion. Hope this helps.

Back in my day in the 10th Mountain, I did the same as you with that 2 canteen system. The Army was really good about keeping us hydrated, so while I had purification tabs, I never had to use them… a few hundred gallon water tank on a trailer, we called them Water Buffaloes, that was always going to be around somewhere at least once a day, so we knew we could drink our canteens dry, and we did, no sloshing at all was how we moved through the area, so, if you were thirsty, you’d wait, and wait some more, until you really needed to drink, then you’d drink the canteen dry, switch canteens, then the next time you saw that water buffalo, fill up, and keep moving. When I was down to one canteen, I’d really not want to drink from it at all, because while I knew that water buffalo would be out there somewhere, you never knew when you’d see it, so… you were really careful. Now in the Mojave Desert, well, then we all carried that extra 2 quart canteen as well.

I've got a couple of the old style canteen carriers I picked up at an A/N store somewhere. Have had them at least 40 years. One is nylon with with some type insulation and the other is canvas with a fur type insulation. Never thought about dunking them in water to cool the canteens, though. The current issue carriers should have some insulation in them. Cheapest contract I guess. I have a 2 quart collapsible also. They have all sure come in handy. I have got to get a couple of those Grayls for the family just in case. Stay hydrated, my friends.

I cut the linings out of all my nylon canteen covers. I figured that here in Florida where 90 degrees and 90 percent humidity are pretty much a given that any "evaporative cooling" was going to be wishful thinking. If you're crossing streams or swimming at all ditching the liner saves a good bit of weight oncet you have to walk again. Makes it easIer to get your cups in and out, too!

I try not to rely on finding water and once still ran out while carrying 7 liters (1.8 gallons!) on a 4 hour trek with no water source. I wasn't expecting 95F on top of the mountain (100 at ground level) and still went through wondering "where are the other hikers??" 3.5-4 hours later, I was downing 2 liters of Gatorade and peeing brown. I didn't pee at all during the hike. Never expect to have enough water on or around you and If you don't pee at all, that's much worse than orange pee.

Camelback use to have this sort of Alkaseltzer tablet that is actually a rehydrating salts thing. You put it in 8 oz of water and et viola a Gatorade like drink. They also made a tablet that is caffeinated. Now NUUN in Walmart has this formula. Look into sports section. I work on utilities in San Diego so I keep a roll of these tablets in my work truck and one in my back pack. Saved my bacon when I was working on the Steam System. Those holes were scary hot.

Use the skin pinch method while on trail to check for early stages of dehydration. With thumb and forefinger pinch the skin on the back of your hand or under your collarbone. The skin under normal hydrated condition will spring back into place. If the pinched skin slowly goes back or worse stays up. Hydrate Now. In the heat you must stay ahead of it. Because dehydration will get way out of hand faster than you think. Blackies idea of keeping Gatoraid in powder form is a great idea. This will help in keeping hydrated and help keep those very painful leg cramps from hitting you in the early morning hours while sleeping after a long day of hiking the trail.

The IDF back in the late 50's of 60's experimented with their soldiers drinking water. They would let the soldier drink all the water that they wanted pulse 1 liter every hour. Then they marched from southern Israel to the north with a series of tasks. The results pointed to drinking water improved moral and fighting ability of the soldiers. Meaning they would operate longer in the heat. When I was in Civil Air Patrol, I'd have my cadets and those assigned to me to drink water. My water order was to beat the heat. I was in the first aid station due to heat injury I ordered a cadet I saw sit and drink his canteen of water then refill it so he wouldn't fall from the heat. I got the heat injury while very hydrated.

When you drink too much at once, most of what you consumed will just run thru you. The stomach can only take in small amounts at once. Always take just 2-3 small sips but do it every 10 minutes. this is much better than having a cup or pint twice an hour.

@@asmith7876 true, but still not in large amounts at once. Water in your body is just like water in nature: a constant supply keeps you growing, a huge flood does not give you any benefits and is a burden. I learned about water consumption from a survival instructor working with several NATO SF and I have no reason not to go by that advice.

One problem (albeit not insurmountable) with soaking a canteen cover is that it can contact clothing and get that clothing wet, resulting in chafing and a painful rash. I've carried as many as four canteens and, even in the heat, I will wear an unlined lightweight field jacket and carry the canteens on a aweb pistol belt high on my waist versus on my hips. I thought I'd struck gold when I found canteen covers with Alice clips instead of wire hangers. No more low hanging, flopping canteens. With a belt around your waist, the canteens roag high on the waist instead of on the hips. One last comment, water out of a Lister bag is the military's way of torturing soldiers!
