Awesome cover and explaining. Here in WV I'm usually on a trout stream or close to water. I've changed systems thru the years. Now, I run a Grayl as primary. I also have a military model Camel pack 3 liter bag in my pack. I run it dry till at camp, fill with Grayl, hang, then use. If I'm going high and away from water, I fill it and carry. Nice thing with version I have is the mouth piece pops off and on off valve makes easier pouring of water. Also, the hose is insulated, however I'd suggest blowing air back thru the hose to help get water out if in cold temps. Assists in keeping hose locking up from ice forming. 👍. As always, great vid and info. See ya first Sept.

Hello Blackie, I just recently found your channel. I appreciate your time and perspective on different gear. I don't care much for the water bladders either. One, like you said, the water gets very hot against my back Two, without stopping, removing my pack and accessing the bladder I have no way of knowing how much water is remaining in the bladder. Thirdly, I lost the mouth piece on the one I had the second time I used it. Fourthly, once its empty it is pretty much useless since I can't boil water in it. Finally, it more trouble to me than it's worth to clean. I just prefer my 32 & 64 ounce stainless steel bottles from SROs. Thank you again for the videos. I am glad I found your channel.

I saw one of your older videos talking about the 2 qt rubber surplus canteen, and found one on eBay, $11 free shipping, I jumped on it faster than you can say “surplus” . It was literally the same one you show, but unused, with the nice canteen carrier with that lining. Man, is that thing nice. It even has something on the cap that you can attach a hose too I think to use with maybe a gas mask or something, idk. But it’s from 1996, and wii on the fantastic. It has a shoulder strap attached to it as well. I actually use it when I walk my dog, I’m able to fit a collapsible water dish for him, and 2 quarts is plenty for both of us. But it’s definitely a great piece of kit, and I would’ve never bought it without seeing that video. Thanks Blackie!

👍👍👍 .. excellent advice on hydration. Back in the late 60's and into the 80's, I served in the military in Southern Africa and the minimum that I carried was Six Canteens / Six Litres .. most of the times, more. During Ops, before going out the following day, in base, I used to 'hydrate up' that afternoon / evening (yes, it meant a 'wake-up during the night .. but .. 😏) and then the morning of, on awakening and then again before getting onto the chopper, glug down a litre. When the others were 'sucking fumes' out of their water bottles, more often than not, I would still have at least two litres in reserve, sometimes more. I've had others in our 'Valk' (Section) offer me substantial amounts of cash for a bottle of (my) water. My reply was always, "I carry it, I drink it" .. until they took my previously scoffed at advice and followed suit regarding my hydration regime 😁. During that period, at times, I've been thirsty .. very, very thirsty. Result? Even now, 40 years later, I never go anywhere without water. Even at home, I have some nearby .. in the sitting room in front of the TV, bedside table, in the fridge and the selection of water containers that I use when going out .. ALL of them, kept filled / refilled on return, for next time. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

Hello Blackie ; I also use the Pathfinder Canteen , cup , and stove set in a similar pouch . I saw a video on KZbin where a fellow named Murphy from Lincoln County modified the canteen cup stove by cutting the top out , to have better air flow and allow for making a fire in it , it also makes the Trangia 's flames more efficient . I used tin snips and a file and modified mine and it worked out well . Simply put the cup on sideways on the stove and it works just like U.S. G.I. canteen cup stove of old . I've seen you use that one to cook in or boil water in that way in one of your past videos . I agree with Mr. Murphy , the mod makes the stove superior to how it performs the way it comes . I look forward to your canteen cup cooking series Sir ! ! !

When I was in the Marines, we had the backpack bladder but we still had the 1 qt canteens to use with the NBC mask. I like adding a German 3 piece canteen set to a cook kit. I also have three blatters of three quarts. The two smaller canteens were carried on my belt. The two quart was on my pack and the blatter was in my pack. Most military packs have a pocket just for the blatter and a place for the drinking tube to pass through. When placed in the pack it does'nt get so hot. The military blatters can be either in a pack or on the back. I do want to get a Pathfinder set some time. My first canteen when i was a kid was an old WWll aluminum canteen. Even though I live where there is plenty of water, when I go somewhere when it is hot I swing by the nearest artesian well and fill a 5 gallon Igloo type water jug/dispenser. I end up supplying others. In Arizona I only carried for my close family and friends. If you didn't carry water I wasn't going to carry it for you. I think SAR out there required you to carry 3 quarts of water instead of the one common "cowboy" canteen. That was only a quart and you had to find the 2 quart which they do sell used. Hardest thing to find is a linen canvas water sack these days. Mine won't be loaned out. If you are on a horse you need water for it. If you have a dog it needs water. I have 4 5 gallon water despensers, one five gallon blue plastic jerry can as well as a metal 5 gallon army water jerry can. Not sure about that paint inside but if needs must.

I also keep a case of water in my vehicle that i can then fill into my canteens ( i keep 2 in my car in my get home bag) and then can carry one or 2 bottles that are my primary water before i need to use my canteens At my age i do not do much hiking anymore due to knees and back issues so i may only be able to travel at most 4 or 5 miles a day and i will often have to rest so i feel like you said it is important to me to have several water sources available to me, when i take the family camping I pre fill 3 5 gallon water jugs that i take with us and tat is our drinkong water for 3 people for the weekend

You're not lying about water in the West. I live hike and hunt in the desert southwest. I consider 2 quarts a 'minimum' for a few hour hike. Anything longer than that I'll carry a gallon plus on me. Excellent video. The water bladder you showed can be hung on the back of your car seat which would keep it cool. I agree with you about the bladder water being at body temperature. I used mine once when I searched for a lost hiker; the water was warm from the pack and the outdoor temperature during our hot Australian summer. I have heard that some people half fill it with ice. I usually run 3 army canteens and 1 or 2 jerry cans during a summer fishing/camping trip to an island 26 miles offshore of Brisbane (I can refill my water storage devices daily). Salty air, the ocean and extreme heat- the body is like a sprinkler.

A main point for me on the value of the Grayl (I own two) is that if you are only boiling or chem treating you still have not removed any heavy metals or industrial contamination Don’t know how many times I’ve gotten laughed at at the beginning of a multi day hike for carrying “too much” water, only to later have to share my water because someone else ran out and there was no source to replenish.
@homeinthewhiteoaks2 ай бұрын
The reason you’re 5 gallon bag does not gurgle, or need to vent is because it is collapsing. There’s no vacuum created by the water escaping because the bag collapses in on that space. A rigid container cannot do that and needs to fill the space with air that the water has vacated..

Also haven't worn it under a pack but if I were to have one alongside it I'd have the pack on my back and the carrier on the pack, plenty of straps and such to secure it and paracord if not, I'd prefer the frame over the odd shape of it.

I have 3 of the Swiss canteens/cups & 4 of the aviators/cups. I wish the cups were stainless steel because a normal temp cup of coffee burns the lips in aluminum cups. I do have the "new" SRO Stainless canteen flask & canteen cup. The USMC optics pouch holds it perfectly. I love the aviators canteen flask because the Sawyer Mini fits it perfectly (canteen flask was designed for that). Also if you lose the cap, a cap from any plastic water, or soda bottle (8oz to 2 liter) will fit it. Re: the Swiss canteen... from what I've read, there's no dedicated pouch for it. There are dedicated canteen pockets on the old Swiss military alpenflage unforms and packs.

During hot summers, when planning to go somewhere where I can easily 'top-up' with potable water, I half-fill my water bottle the night before and freeze it lying at an angle. The next morning, fill it with cold fridge water and into an insulated sleeve.

My wife and children make fun of me for calling water “Worter”. Trying to figure out where my “Worter” dialect comes from? Seriously

often words and how they are mis spoken are passed down to us as children.. in my family it was spoken (what-er-melon) instead of the proper watermelon (water-melon) took me yrs to correct it in my head lol
