Remember when these field jackets were cheap? Those were the days.
@waynehendrix480611 ай бұрын
I spent a lot of the later 80's in one. Don't tell Blackie, but we wore them above the Mason Dixon in 5 (f) degree weather often. I have an early "white whisker side" liner, and that thing alone was warmer than the "all green" liners. Just lofted enough air to insulate better. We didn't sleep in ours though. We were litter trained by the humans, not the wolves. The good part was that especially during the winters, we didn't have to look for gators. Anywhere. I have 2 jackets and 2 liners in the closet currently. If we start to talk about wool, I have another story. Army surgeons long top coat. WW2. I remember it keeping me warm on a car ride in 0 degree weather.

You can get a brand new USA made M65 for ~$100 vs a USA made Carhartt for the same price. Not a bad deal IMO. Also, you can frequently find them at thrift stores for very very cheap. I got one last year with a liner for $6 at a local thrift.

@@waynehendrix4806Nothing beats a long wool overcoat for that weather. I used one on my bed with another blanket during the Arctic Blast and was impressed when I turned off the heat to my bedroom. Just an experiment with various types of wool to see how they performed over the week. Right now is the Finnish field jacket and those northern Europeans make quality outerwear.

My lord, I would be roasting in 2 layers of the liner. I actually wore long johns, tops an bottoms, an a lined feild jacket below zero an was warm as hell. But we had wool socks, helmet liner, an insulated gloves, an could be out in the elements on gaurd duty with my web gear an rifle, all night. We didnt have any chemical handwarmers back then, but we always had a thermos of hot coffee an snacks for energy. Another thing, always roll up your clothes an put them inside your sleeping bag, so your not immediately losing body heat putting on cold clothes, whether its a ranger roll or a sleeping bag, if your not sleeping in your duty uniform or clothes. I have quite a few m65 jackets from the original od to the woodland camouflage. My favorite is a original od green one as they are getting rare to find now in good shape. I used to wear them at work and destroyed a few because of what I do. I stopped wearing them at work but I used to keep one in my car for backup just in case weather goes south.

In cold weather I was never warm in the field jacket even with the liner. Today I can buy a lightweight non-cotton jacket with advanced insulation and reflective material on the inside that weighs 1/4 what the field jacket did and is warmer. I can add a fleece sweater and double the warmth and still weigh less than half of what the field jacket weighs. I still have my field jacket I got in June of 1964 but it stays in a foot locker with all the rest of my military memorabilia. I love the old days but I love the high tech clothing more.

Blackie I used to use the safety pins from the ammunition bandoleers. They were nearly as large as diaper pins, made of non-rusting brass, and painted black to prevent shining. Very similar brass pins can be found at Walmart today in the sewing section -- just paint them black yourself if necessary. The Walmart ones are also non-magnetic just like the old military ones.

I thought my liner was actual fleece. Yellow and fluffy I don't remember it being slippery and green , I was issued it in Kentucky in boot camp in November 1969. Who knows, I might be mistaken or Mandela effect , It was a long time ago 54 years I know the field jacket and liner would keep you warm even when it was mighty cold out . I only had one time in January on guard duty , it was about 20 below zero and it had snowed the day before quite a bit , that night the wind was blowing like crazy and it was blowing all that fallen snow around and I got so cold I thought I would freeze to death.

Love my M-65 with liner. For underlayer, I use a M-Tac ( from Ukraine ) fleece underwear sweater and for more extreme, a hoodie on top the M-Tac but under the M-65. It's been below zero F here that last week or so, and I'm good with this setup. The M-tac is a rather snug fit which works well as an underlayer. I'll have to try the double liner trick, thanks Blackie.

Last week, I was removing snow from my yard at a temperature of 8°F with negative wind chills. I was using a base layer long sleeve Dry-Duke shirt, cotton/polyester hoodie, and the m65 with two liners. The next thing I did was roll the hoodie into the m65 collar and secured the velcro strap (I always used a Swiss neck gaiter before, but this simplified setup completely eliminated the need for that). Then, I finished up with a scarf and ushanka hat. The next day, I used the same setup when I went out for a hike in the same temperature. I had no problem staying warm and I am very greatful for your helpful advice. If you are persistent, you can find good deals online. By doing do, you can still get a usgi m65 with liner in the $40-$80 range. As you mentioned, it is good to make sure that you get a size that gives you enough room to layer up. I started out with a size small jacket, but ended up having to also track down a medium in order to have room to layer up because my chest measures right at the border of small/medium (37"). If I could only have one, I would just go with the medium because you can adjust the jacket's fit with the inside middle draw cord.

When i was in the service I used to wear the inner liner under my BDU shirt that way when i removed my M65 I still had that additional layer as the M65 can get bulky and clumsy. Restrict movement and sometimes just get in the way.

I was thinking on that over last years hunt, while sitting in the snow, with 30 degree temp and 25 mph winds. Either direct, or on a mid layer. Hot hands are ok in pockets, but could be greatly improved on for kidney and even upper back heat. Baby socks??

Last week when temperatures here on the Texas Coastal Bend dropped into the low 20s (mid-teens wind chill) I was able to use it for the first time. Worked just as you said it would even on the day when we had freezing rain. It is now my Winter truck jacket; where my truck goes, it goes. This a great idea. Ill do both liners, then a down vest. The U.S. army required, in stable "camp" conditions, you only need to add a single 18° more layer clothing to sleep thru the nightime. Q: why not ware the poncho under the outter layer, over the liners, on m-65 as a cold Weather wind break, when walking? In big wind i think the m-65 can hold its own with snow. Just wind cuts thru you.

Their stuff is absolutely phenominal. But with this stuff on, i'm outside working 8 to 10 hours, then working on the homestead, again outdoors all night, down to low 20's (20°F) Super casual, no cold 😅 Then a pair of snowpants i keep on standby at all times, i'm unstoppable even with no fire lol just have to watch the feet and hands 💯💨

I have a jacket that's labeled Coat Cold Weather Field, Woodland Camouflage, John Ownbey Company, Inc. I couldn't get the model/serial # off it without a stronger magnifying glass. Not sure if it's military or hunting. There's buttons on the inside like for a liner, short zipper. You got any ideas?

The Best ever jacket. I got them 8. All military issue, woodland, 3 and 6 color desert ..the rest (5) are OG & OD. made by So Sew, Golden mfg. Atlanco and early Alpha ( under contract). I don't like some copies but, if you can't find genuine military M65 field jacket there is very, very good copy made by Helikon Tex M65. Far better than today's M65 made by Alpha or Rothco.

Yes, the M65 Helikon-tex is made under US original license. I have 8 or 9 M65 jackets, standard issue from Alpha, 3rd party brandit & Helikon. No doubt - Helikon is the best to buy it new these days.

I was going to ask about where to get a good M65 that was made well. Picked up an East German/Polish surplus jacket with fake fleece lining for pruning trees when the temperature gets below 15 F back in the early 200's Cheap $12 ea. Not an M65 though.

Beautiful jacket design. Seems like it would do well over here in the north. Greetings from Sweden. 🇸🇪

Definitely one of the best jackets ever made. I really want one in that od green. I have 2 The 90s woodland camo and the dumbest and ugliest and most Useless camo ever made, the ACU pattern.

if you drop that acu in a dark green rit dye bath it will work a lot better in the woods
