Grounded: Final Update, Will It Be Good?

I like the ant queens but I really wish they had done something to address the fact that the lower yard feels way more narratively driven than the mid and upper yards. After the 4th lab it becomes almost open world, and there is little guidance on what to do so you just wander around. Adding some more hints and guidance through burgle or discovered reports would have been nice. Still like the game and will check out the update though

The game IS an open world... and wdym by, "there is little guidance on what to do so you just wander around"? BURG.L tells you to go to Wendell's chair by the shed once you hand in all Super Burg.L chips, it is a pinned quest in the top left, and it literally puts a map marker on the map where you need to go... how is that not enough guidance...

@@The_Apex_Of_Predators true, it's open world in that you can go most places but I don't think it's a stretch to say the story for the lower yard is more tightly designed than the middle and upper yards. Burg.l tells you to go to the chair but that's really the last time I remember him telling you to go much of anywhere in the upper yard and there are large parts of the upper yard you never even have to actually visit to finish the game. I don't remember any reason in the actual story of the game for you to visit the woodpile, the stump, the fire ant hill, moldorc castle, the toy bin etc. Most of the upper yard is spent gathering materials, and you can explore almost the entirety of it without ever advancing anything actually story related. I don't consider gathering parts for a recipe to finish the game actual story in the same way having a narrative to follow would be. I'm not trying to bag on the game. I really like Grounded, but I do wish they had used the last update to flesh the upper yard out with some more story events and reasons to visit all the locations besides, go there to get ingredient.

@@jonservo There are now wasps and a wasp queen in the upper yard, which is a reason to go there, and with 1.4 the fire ant hill will be getting a fire ant queen, another reason to go to the upper yard. But your original point was that there was little guidance, now you are saying it's because the story doesn't take you to the top right of the yard? Only thing I would change is make the grilled science in the stump lab instead, and it only unlocks after finding wendell (of course the mantis recipe would be moved to a new outpost and the current way to open the stump lab would open this new outpost)

@@The_Apex_Of_Predators okay I will agree my original critique needed to be better worded, I gave it some thought. Guidance was not the right word for what I was trying to convey. My original critique was that the upper yard feels less narratively directed (or guided, which is where that word came from) than the lower yard. The lower yard is very well paced. You need to get bigger, Burg.l needs the chips for his memory to help and the progression of the labs and upgrading as you go feels satisfying. When you get to the upper yard a large majority of it feels arbitrary. The bosses are all optional, and most of the locations are optional and have no direct effect on the game’s story aside from maybe getting the good ending and that mostly relies only on beating shmector. Adding a wasp queen in the toy bin is not a “reason” to go there, it’s something to do but it doesn’t matter all that much. Instead of upgrading your gear naturally as you play out the story the upper yard uses tier levels to force progression. Instead of having the parts you need to build better tools because you had to go somewhere to advance the narrative you discover you can’t get stuff because you need a new tool to progress so you have to get parts, and most of it plays out like that. You have to get parts, so you can get parts to get parts. I think the upper yard really would have been better if they had you meet Wendell early on and find out that instead of only needing a recipe for getting bigger the actual device had parts stolen from it (maybe by Shmector or his lackeys) and placed in the most dangerous parts of the upper yard like the termite mound, fire ant hill, toy bin, the mantis’ flower pot, and destroyed lab. Then you would have a genuine narrative reason to visit all these locations and need to beat the bosses to get the parts back. Visiting and overcoming each location would give you the needed bug parts and materials to get stronger and take on the next location. The big difference is that upgrading and exploring would be intertwined with advancing the plot. This would make the upper yard feel more narratively satisfying, in my opinion anyway. Like I said, I’m not saying this to make people hate the game. I love Grounded. I bought it the same day it first went into early access in 2020. I played it way back when every new update broke something in the game and replayed it after the 1.0 release. It’s because I like the game that I would love to have seen them address some of the issues it has in the upper yard.

I only started the game about 2 weeks ago. I should be about done when it releases, just made it to the JavaMatic quest which feels like I'm near the end (plus most the map is explored now, so I must be close). Really happy about the time I jumped in, I can fiddle a bit with the new ant queens and then jump into ng+ right on release. Haven't had as much fun with a game in a LONG time.

For the ants, I really hope there will be some kind of mostly fluff but cool feature where I can set up a "collection build" which the ants will fill for you. Red ants could bring you grass and stems, black ants could bring you the assorted foods, and fire ants might bring you some creature parts (not sure about last one, but they seem the most combat-y so that seems most likely) if you befriend them. That would be SO COOL imo, just a smidge of palworld with ants working for you :) If you betray them, no idea what consequences could be had besides base raids, but I'm sure it's going to be more interesting than that.

You should be able to use scanner for the randomized molars so it shouldn't be that hard.(like having to run around looking for them). On the base building I think the system itself is pretty good. And keeping base building optional is to appeal to those who don't want to build base. iirc bigger the base bigger the raid tho they can't scale it that hard bc there's no trap, like real trap. But I think these bugs are going to just bypass/get stuck at most of the traps so it's hard to implement one I guess.(They do get stuck at all sort of terrains) But with lack of active defense doing MIX.R is quite a let down. You just spam walls and done. A bit of firework show would really be nice.

1 thing I do wish for that other games have to a certain extent is a way to mod the game. This game could have been even better if we had the ability to mod in custom things like bosses, bugs and anything else modders can come up with on curseforge. Another example for a mod could be more traps and defence stuff. Like how ark, minecraft, to a certain extent 7 days to die and a few other games that are even more popular with the addition to be able to add mods to their game. To bad that is not happening since this is the final main update. Besides bug fixes prob.

Just started playing again, so I could get familiar with it and crush it 100% when the final update releases. It’s kinda disappointing tbh, I have always wanted a survival game with insects and this really made that a reality so it’s a shame to see it end abruptly. This update isn’t enough to get my friends back either so I’ll be taking this final ride alone.

Is the game so difficult for people that more/better traps are even warranted? I've played the game on every difficulty aside from Custom and even on Woah mode, base raids are pretty pathetic. Traps are useless unless they play the game for you. Why would I invest time and resources into a trap when I can do more damage and protect my base easier and faster? If they were to add more or better traps, then they need to either increase HP and Attack of all enemies by 10x or increase the spawns in raids by 10x. 😂 There needs to be a reason to add traps because as it stands, there is no reason.

Starfield new game+ blows, you lose everything you worked for except your armor, there is a difference in new game + and fresh start, Bethesda needs to be able to know the difference between the two before they are allowed to call it one thing or another.

@@Clogmonger the main issues are desync(makes grabbing certain items impossible and parrying in combat impossible). Rubber banding makes traveling super annoying because not only are you getting teleported back to where you started but your stamina still gets used. The problem is these issues are happening constantly and they never stop. Speed builds for traveling are useless and early game combat is way harder than it needs to be. Edit: Even if you make it to the late game good luck fighting some of the bosses. I can't imagine fighting the IBM without being able to parry.

I really loved grounded. I had to stop playing due to it just taking too much of my time. I know it sounds lame, but I would just get so distracted with getting resources. I would look at the time, next thing I knew three hours flew by, easily. I did have to turn off story mode, I got tired of needing to repair my armor and weapons all the time. I had a hard time mastering blocking/perfect block. I think Grounded has so many great qualities in it, the perfect graphics to match the game, combat was good, crafting was the amount.

Probably about 30 seconds, maybe 1 minutes, possibly 2 minutes if you have a really, really large base

It is pretty optimized on pc, I've played it on multiple computers from a potato to my desktop which has a 4090 and threadripper. I don't notice any difference between the two honestly from low end to top end.

It’s built to run on a freaking Xbox one. If you’re referring to multiplayer lag, that’s because it uses the hosts WiFi instead of servers, so that way they don’t have to pay just to keep the game up.
