It seems like a nice thing they are doing but it isn't, it's terrible for the local ecosystem. It artificially inflates wildlife populations in an area where natural predation (wolves, foxes, etc.) have been driven out which has ramifications up and down the food chain. This is a huge problem in my neighborhood, where people think they are doing a good thing by feeding the deer, but the deer population around here is unstainable which leads to the vegetation being stripped bare, because the vegetation is stripped the roots holding the banks of waterways are weakened and waterways erode leading to the destruction of wetlands and the death of aquatic wildlife. Go look what happened to the local ecosystem when they reintroduced predators into Yellowstone Park, herbivore populations stabilized, vegetation got the opportunity to regrow, and waterway erosion declined. Unless there are extreme circumstances you shouldn't feed wild animals, it may feel like you're doing a good thing but you probably don't understand the bigger role these animals play in a much larger ecosystem.

In the seventies I had a friend in high-school that found a nest of newborn groundhogs and the mother was dead nearby. He gave me one to raise....it's eyes still closed. I nursed it to adulthood where it remained an indoor pet for two years. Taffy regularly used a litter box and cuddled like he was our cat. He was notorious for sneaking out of his cage and slipping into bed with me. The screen door couldn't hold him in his second spring as the little she-hog outside captured his heart. He made a very modest tear in the screen so as to say, "sorry but...." They too hung around for several years. They are fun little creatures!!

Wild animals do not have the same cognitive abilities that humans take for granted. Wild animals are opportunistic feeders; meaning they will always gravitate to the easiest source of food. That does not negate the fact that they are still *WILD* animals, and wild animals will most often bite the hand that feeds them...literally. hell, even the most tame dog is still prone to bite for no good reason.

It's crazy, it really does seem like there is communication between the various species. My sister has that type of situation in her yard. It's like word spread that "She's cool. You don't have to worry." among all the woodland creatures. The chipmunks are definitely food driven, but the birds will come and just look at her and sing and chirp even when the feeder is full. They will even land on her. The craziest is a garter snake that follows her around when she waters the garden. I know it wants the water but it seems to have no fear of being close to her.

A real life "Disney Princess"... More like a real life idiot. I can't wait for her or some small child in her suburb to get bitten by a wild animal that has lost it's fear of humans because of her stupidity (Anitbiotics aren't cheap) Feeding wild animals is never okay...not ever. Not to mention the fact that wild animals that have acclimated to humans are almost indistinguishable from rabid animals. Any wild animal that willingly approaches a human should be considered rabid. My (then eight year old, now twenty four year old) son can testify to that as he was attacked by a rabid Groundhog. Luckily he was smart enough to keep his distance and inform me. My .22 took care of the rest.

We used to have deer, squirrels, turkeys, a groundhog too timid to make contact, and a baby raccoon that we only saw with a small opossum. I’m pretty sure the raccoon and opossum were orphans. The deer knew when my daughter came home from school every day. They would be there five minutes early each day for her to bring treats out and read to them. The squirrels were enticed to use a branch to my bedroom window for goodies. They would sit on the sill and watch tv while they nibbled. The turkeys were more aggressive. If there was no corn kernels waiting for them when they trouped by, they would knock on the door. Don’t ask me how. I never caught them at it. I miss that backyard.
