It's a deep lesson too! That even with all the time or chances in the world, some things like death are just inevitable. It doesn't matter how much you improve yourself, or try to help, some people are just going to die - what's really beautiful is that he cares for the old man anyway even knowing 100% that in a way it 'doesn't matter' cause he's 100% going to die in the next 24 hours. Super profound. I guess everyone's lifes going to end, that doesn't mean improving the quality of the time they do have here isn't worthwhile

I always wished they had a scene of phil using some time/days trying to find the old man's family or close friend(s) and him (the old man) being able to spend his last day on earth with his family or friends(s) with them giving him comfort and compassion other than Phil every day and night...it would haunt me if I was phil knowing that there were some days he couldn't spend with him and he would be out in the cold and would die alone. Even if he couldn't find any the old man's family of friends, it still would be nice to have an arc of phil spending time finding a good caring family or home to take him in just for the day...that way we know when we see Phil spending time with Rita , the old man is not just all by himself in the cold.

Because at the beginning of the story, the teacher would not take him initially, as he was not a current student of hers. When he offers her a large wad of money that he purloined from the dopey Brinks guards in a prior scene, the teacher threw out a little girl who was her current student, and gladly ushered him in. At that first lesson, Phil was pretty bad, as he had never played the piano before. However whatever experiences Phil has with each Groundhog Day stick with him, so although the initial reluctance of the teacher and disposal of the little girl happens anew each time, Phil's knowledge of the prior lessons are retained. In this later scene, to the teacher this is his "first" lesson, but he is able to play a passable rendition of a difficult (Bach?) composition. The piano lesson scene is a capsule of the entire movie. After Phil resigns himself to improving with each repeated day, he becomes a better person.
