It's a deep lesson too! That even with all the time or chances in the world, some things like death are just inevitable. It doesn't matter how much you improve yourself, or try to help, some people are just going to die - what's really beautiful is that he cares for the old man anyway even knowing 100% that in a way it 'doesn't matter' cause he's 100% going to die in the next 24 hours. Super profound. I guess everyone's lifes going to end, that doesn't mean improving the quality of the time they do have here isn't worthwhile

This comes when Bill is starting to think he is God...the old man and his unavoidable death destroys any visions of power that Bill had. With everything else going on, this old man made Bill help completely helpless.
@ryanmoon05

I always wished they had a scene of phil using some time/days trying to find the old man's family or close friend(s) and him (the old man) being able to spend his last day on earth with his family or friends(s) with them giving him comfort and compassion other than Phil every day and night...it would haunt me if I was phil knowing that there were some days he couldn't spend with him and he would be out in the cold and would die alone. Even if he couldn't find any the old man's family of friends, it still would be nice to have an arc of phil spending time finding a good caring family or home to take him in just for the day...that way we know when we see Phil spending time with Rita , the old man is not just all by himself in the cold.

Fun fact: they shot all the scenes in a reverse order because of how Bill Murray operates during filming. To elaborate: when filming begins he's always super jazzed and wants to get things done, he's in a good mood and loves the world. But as filming progresses, his mood sours, and he hates everything and everyone.

That was hilarious when he freaks Ned out like that! That ice sculpture was pretty and the last part of this clip was sad finding out the guy ends up dying. My heart broke when I saw Phil's face when he was upset about the guy that he tried to help ended up dying. An episode of NCIS copied this movie where Tony DiNozzo's dad kept getting bothered by this homeless woman who thought his dad was her dad, he tried to help her, but once he did it was pretty much too late.

I watched a video on the passage of time with this movie and given the amount of skills he learned he was most likely living the same day for up to 30-40years.

Tomás cinnsealeach There are known cases of people who have immediate virtuoso talent that spring up from both head injuries and just spontaneous. They can't figure out the reason behind this sudden gift of skills.

Even if she was suspicious, she probably wouldn't throw him out on his first lesson just because he is oddly adept at piano.

Probably cause she asked something on the line of "Is this your first lesson?" and he replied that it was, indeed, the first day he took a piano lesson. Which is true, but in his case... lol, no wonder why the woman was confused.

Because at the beginning of the story, the teacher would not take him initially, as he was not a current student of hers. When he offers her a large wad of money that he purloined from the dopey Brinks guards in a prior scene, the teacher threw out a little girl who was her current student, and gladly ushered him in. At that first lesson, Phil was pretty bad, as he had never played the piano before. However whatever experiences Phil has with each Groundhog Day stick with him, so although the initial reluctance of the teacher and disposal of the little girl happens anew each time, Phil's knowledge of the prior lessons are retained. In this later scene, to the teacher this is his "first" lesson, but he is able to play a passable rendition of a difficult (Bach?) composition. The piano lesson scene is a capsule of the entire movie. After Phil resigns himself to improving with each repeated day, he becomes a better person.

What's interesting is skills like those take years to develop. So he spent a long long LONG time stuck in the time loop.

French apparently takes about 600 hours of lessons to learn to speak fluently. So, unless he did it less intensively, that's only a one hour lesson per day for about two years.

I like this notion (similar to the figure in King's 11/22/63 but I think he recognised him from the donation that Phil must have given him earlier that day...although for some strange reason he is not there in that shot with Ned.....(maybe Ned was around later in the day?)

How long Phil was in the time loop varies according to what source you look at. In the book that the movie was based on Phil gets stuck in the loop for 10,000 years. But according to Harold Ramis (the guy who directed Groundhog Day) Phil was in the loop for 'only' about 40 years.
