Group B Monsters - The Days of Madness. I decided to do a homage entirely dedicated to the crazy days of rallying with slow-motion footage that shows the madness and beauty of this era in depth.
Music score:
0:43 -- Azure Clouds (by Audio Machine)
1:56 -- Life Chronicles (by Audio Machine)
4:01 -- Dom and Maria (also known as With Sympathy) from Gears of War 2 OST
5:40 -- Aftermath (by Clint Mansell from Smokin´ Aces)

Michele Mouton flying past in a quattro in excess of 200 kmh. You could hear this thing screaming in the distance like some hell beast, exploding past where we were standing in a shower of gravel, dirt dust and that howling sound. As the earth settled back into place and you could hear her bellowing off into the distance some guy standing behind me summed it all up when he said "I think I'm in love".

Sorry folks if you never saw group B for real, or when the 917 raced at Le Mans, Stefan Bellof, Henry Toivonen or Ayrton Senna. The 1000hp F1 cars, Group B or the best time in sports car racing.... Two moments when I knew the end was nigh for the motorsport I loved: Audi pulling out of rallying after the Toivonen tragedy, and turbos being banned in the year following the MP4/4's brilliant 1988 season. Thank god we've still got hillclimbing where the FIA can't meddle with their ugly mitts...

I remember perfectly well every day they all died. More so Ayrton Senna. The day he died I was working as Air traffic Controller in Cascais, near Lisbon. We received a phone call and it was his Fiancée, Adriana Galisteu, crying on the phone. She was 15 km away in Sintra and wanted a jet to depart to Imola immediately. We did arrange a Citation in no time and a Flight Plan was filled, but for some reason she never showed up...

+Antonio Santos Do you think a modern WRC driver wouldn't be able to drive a group B car just as fast as rally drivers in the '80s? Drivers today have incredible skill, having modern rally cars simply means that they'll go even faster while still pushing themselves just as hard as the '80s drivers. Group B cars were exciting thanks to the engines and the driving style, but the drivers weren't any better than modern WRC drivers.

Drivers are one thing, but another is the condition of citizen back then. Just look at it. No safety tapes, no marshalls, people standing on the road. Rally would lead through a city center, next to a cafe garden. And people could stand anywhere they wanted and risk their lives if they wanted to. Those were free people. Free to decide what to do with their lives. Today? Today you must wear seatbelts, or you get a ticket, on rallies you are told like a little child where you can stand and where can't and on some events it's not even allowed to help the crews that went out of the road.

Unrivalled, never repeated, unique. The golden days of Group B. Only a handful of drivers were able to REALLY drive them. Alen, Kankkunen, Roehrl, Blomquvist, Salonen etc etc Yes tragic as well - see Henry Toivonen and Sergio Cresta. But the fascination of riding on a cannon ball pushed the fear out of their minds... But the sheer brutality of these cars was absolutely unique. Spectators unfortunately crazy , but then, who can blame them. Those who were there and experienced Group B know what I am talking about and will never forget it. I doubt they will be there nowadays to watch. Of course todays drivers are on a different planet compared to the ordinary motorist, but the cars... a lukewarm example for a rally car compared to a S1, Delta S4 , 205 T16 Evo, RS 200, Metro 6 R4 etc...

Racing is a passion just like art, the artist has his brush, the drivers had their cars, the artist has his canvas, the dirt was the canvas of whence these drivers lived out their wildest dreams and worst nightmares. Those who pushed themselves and their machines to the limit, racing with a passion that was nothing short of infinite. Group B will live on forever in the hearts of all of us, we will never forget the brave men and women who put their lives on a razors edge for our entertainment.

The very fisrt rally car I saw was the 205 T16 driven by Timmo Salonen on its way to victory in Portugal. The noise of the car, the noise of the crowd, the flames coming out of the exhaust as it shifted are memories implanted in my head forever. Group B was absolute madness not just for the drivers but for the crowd too ... A few years ago in Algarve I saw a Quattro driven by Waldegard and the adrenaline just pumped up again, followed by Ari in a T16. They were opening the road for the WRC and they were STILL the highligth of the day !! :)

Looking back to when I was a kid and was watching all those late night Rally reports on sports televisions of that era, I remember the sheer fascination and respect that I felt about those guys crammed ever so tightly in the cockpits. No safety instructions. No unnecessary meetings, and no politics. Just drive like hell and live to drive another day. If I had to pick one video that made me want to laugh and cry at the same time, I really think that this would be the one that I´d choose. By far one of the coolest racing scenes to ever exist. Insanely powerful cars, in the 1980s, nothing but twists and turns, and hills to go soaring over. Rally racing is one thing, but you had to be INSANE to take it to this level. Perhaps its demise was for the better - Group B was incredibly dangerous - but it also marked the demise of quite possibly the most exciting rally racing there will ever be. I mean, every video I see on this, it just impresses me, watching those car SAIL over hills and smash into the ground, bouncing back up so hard the cars come back off the ground. Every corner is a drift as the car kicks out, and then just rockets off at a blistering speed, making your ears bleed as they do. RIP the guys who lost their lives from the inevitable crashes, but I bet if their spirits could talk, they'd say they had a hell of a lot of fun doing it, and would do it again if they could.

I started working for Peugeot/Talbot in 1986 and the timing couldn’t have been better! The hot hatches were all the rage and the 205 GTI the business, but, the 205 Turbo 16 was magical. We had one in our showroom for a short time and our boss insisted it didn’t get cleaned! He wanted the mud still on it from the rally for authenticity!

Thing is that the engines made that horsepower in qualifying trim. These monsters right here could be cold started, were meant not to explode and STILL had outputs of 500-600 hp, which is about as much (or a bit less) as a F1 car during the race. That was the golden age of rallying. Not F1.

yep, but B. Eclestone wants every race track updated every year for the new F1 cars, instead of the GrB which was more and more powerful, but the road didn't change at all, I've been on the road from Gr4 (M.Mouton with the Fiat 131Abarth) to the end of Grb, go in Corsica and watch them going flat out with those cars, were a few years before it was ''acceptable'', Toivonen has paid the highest price , that's why all pilots from this Era are Legend today.

Máté Ágoston Motor sport in general was in a golden age during 80s and 90s. The racing of yesterday, not the cars but the actual racing was so much more exciting. I'll watch highlights of the week but for modern motor sport, even rally, I get no real joy out of watching the whole event - Yet I can sit down and watch an entire NASCAR race (of all things) from 1989 and be on the edge of my seat the whole time. IDK, I can't exactly put my finger on what makes it different, it can't really be nostalgia as I'm 20, the best way I can describe it... gonna catch some hate for this - Racing has lost its soul. Maybe it's safety, maybe it's the drivers or the rules, but modern racing, even rally just feels like a parade to me. Just my opinion of course.

In the 80's motorsport was about fun, about racing, group B was crazy, but oh my god i wish to go back in time. I was born in 1992 so i missed this. Today it is only about rules, it is so fucking boring, but it is not only the rally, formula 1 is the same boring shit. Pikes Peak was always on the gravel, today everywhere tarmac. Nonsense rules and decisions totally killed whole motorsport.

Portugal 1986, Lagoa Azul special stage near Sintra. The crowd gathered on the limits of the rugged tarmac to see the latest skilled drivers with their group B monster rally cars. I was 16 years old at the time and went to see the same spectacle as everybody else. We knew when the first contender was approaching such was tremendous roaring of those cars, specially the inline 5 of the Audi Quattro S1, what a monster! If I’m not wrong it was Timo Salonnen with his Peugeot 205 T16 the first to run. It’s impossible to put into words the gigantic impression of power delivered by the passing of those cars. The next few drivers passed and then...silence. Me and some friends waited anxiously a few 300 meters ahead the Joaquim Santos accident location that took the lives of 3 spectators and injured 30 more. A few minutes later the news arrived. We knew it was a matter of time for a tragedy like that to happen. Those were really crazy times...and spectators! But what an era!! I’ll never forget it! Thanks for this great video , even if no video can reproduce the thrill of seeing the action on location.

Jocker It's not an either/or choice. You can have powerful cars (The RallyX cars have the same output as some of the Group B cars) and safety together. The thing that makes it is a high-profile series and decent drivers and cars with some road-relevance. The current ones don't have that and all look the same.

Rallying is a different type of sport. Not even like the gracefulness of drifting, it is rough, and it is raw, but the beauty is seen through the skills each of those drivers had. It is essentially an art 💯 to see how those nimble machines glide across the earthly roads, its an amazing sight! Those drivers were fearless, and they openly embraced every challenge, and risk that was infront of them. To see the fans by the sidelines cheering, those were the days!
