Hannu Mikkola, Walter Rohl, Timo Salennen, Penti Arrkikola, Marku Alen, Stig Blomquist, Tony Pond and the likes were a breed apart.....500bhp+ made Rallying what it is today. I wish that these "Beasts" were competing in todays WRC...Subaru and Mitsubishi would be eating dust....no way could they compete!!! AWESOME VID....BY FAR THE BEST ON KZbin!!!!!

I've honestly watched this video more times than I could count. This is the only car video I like with music. Every time I watch this video, the hair on my arms and legs stand up on end. Its such a chilling thing to watch. However, at the same time, my eyes get watery. Not because of how awesome it is, but rather due to the fact we will never see such cars and such talent like this again, across all motorsports. Group B is the pinnacle of all automobile racing.

That one clip @2:26 to 2:33 just perfectly sums up Groupe B. The insane speed, the ferocious sound, the armful of opposite lock using up every last mm of road, and the spectator totally shocked by what he has just witnessed.

exactly. röhrl is the best rally driver that has ever driven a rally car, and made standards for the next generation of drivers, especially including intense physical training that wasn't considered very important in those days. he was the king of group B and rallying in general.

Motorsports in general were at their best in the 80s. F1, rally, endurance racing, touring car and oval racing all had their craziest up to that point, and even though the speeds and lap times are just as if not better then back in 80s...you can't really "feel" it (as a spectator at least).

default1976 : I think Hannu is referring to the test that Lancia did at Estoril a week before the Portuguese F1 GP. The story goes that Henri Toivonen took out Tyrell F1 driver Jonathan Palmer for a quick lap in his Delta S4, and in doing so set a time that would have seen him 10th in the grid for the following weeks F1 race.

Hard to disagree with you, but for me all these Group B rally cars were equally epic.

Raptowny Its gotta be the quattro S1, revolutionary piece of kit, that was the beginning of the end for two wheel drives in WRC, and ultimately even though their car was so much further advanced in comparison to the likes of the 205 and the RS200, audi ultimately took the blame for the death of Group B, because the other teams were playing catch up in regards to the vehicles so much they kept taking risks, also combined with the lack of proper safety regulations (crowd control mainly). if simple changes such as making sure the crowd were out of the way of the car, like they do today, the big RS200 crash would never have happened, that was purely the crowds fault for getting in the way of a 500bhp ford doing roughly 85/90mph on dirt right before a tight corner, if proper crowd control measures were involved, the collateral damage would have been minimal.. but it was sadly too late to save these beautiful works of art from the crusher, and saved from being banished from rally

@@owlie373 lancia had a good car in both the 037 and the delta S4, BUT they relied on underhand tactics to try and gain an advantage over competitors, like on the rallies where dust was a big issue, they would distract the Marshall pretending there was an issue with the car for just long enough to let the dust settle a bit, thus having a clearer run to try and get a faster time, admitted the 037 was a magnificent machine with it being the first car implementing both a turbo and a supercharger (twincharged) but the quattro system marked the beginning of the end for top end WRC cars being 2wd, now 2wd have separate categories and the main group A is always AWD cars. But there is no disagreements that these drivers were truly skilled people, no electronic aids in a 500+bhp car relying on a purely mechanical machine, granted there are some talented drivers today but in comparison I don't think the drivers who compete today would be able to match a time in a group B car that the drivers of the time set, maybe time will tell if the FIA will Bring back these weapons in some form or another that isn't restricted to rallyX or time attack up pikes peak.

@@lambokid20 I agree. None of the current pilots will not be able to repeat the success of Röhrl or Mouton (for example). The current rally is just a circus without animals. And yet I think that the Quattro S1 was a great car, but it still lost the rear-wheel drive 037 (yes Lancia used a trick, but after all, Audi did not honestly enter the all-wheel drive in the rally). And this is the first and only victory in history.

Over a decade later this video is still my favourite car video, period. I saw in on liveleak in the mid to late 00s and nothing captures the sport of racing better than this one IMO. Today with less muppets standing on the side of the track and better safety, group B needs to return. It would bring so much new attention back to rallying. When I show these videos to kids of today they are amazed and have seen nothing like it. I don't care for modern WRC, more the smaller stuff that is done locally in our own countries. Group B would get me watching again...
