I taught group piano for 6 years in an afternoon school program. We had grades 1-5 mixed so there were different levels within each class. This was at 3 different schools for the entire school year and each class met weekly. Since we had mainly beginners, group participation was playing the same piece together. I think it could be good thing to have studio classes which I participated in when I taught in another program (which involved other studios also). This was on a Saturday morning and students shared some of their pieces with the other students. We also did rhythm exercises and floor theory games. The most challenging aspect of group piano is teaching different levels in one class. There were two us of though so we could divide up our efforts. I did enjoy teaching group lessons because I could really use a lot of visual aids and the students also got to participate in leading some instruction on the large whiteboard in the classroom. There were 6 to 15 max in each class. Thanks for the helpful information. Studio class is something I should implement once again as it is a great experience for the students.

Oh that’s such amazing experience, Donna! Yes! Those multi level classes are such a challenge, but I love how you adapted and brought in so many other ways of learning and enjoying music. Thanks for listening in! 🎹♥️

Loved seeing those of you who popped in live and hope this will be helpful for those of you who are curious about adding more group teaching to your teaching toolbox!
