Grover Cleveland's brother, William, was my great great grandfather. My grandfather met Grover once when he was a toddler, but he didn't remember the visit. However, Cleveland's wife, Frances, who my grandfather referred to as "Great Aunt Frank", stayed in contact until the end of her life. In fact she and her second husband attended my grandfather's wedding in 1926.

As a Hawaii college student in the early 1990's, I was given the assignment to choose any presidential speech and deliver it in class. Most the students selected either a favorite or a recent inaugural address. However, there was one outstanding individual who delivered a speech that stood apart and ahead from all the others. His speech was that of President Grover Cleveland. What made his presentation so memorable was that it was a passionate plea by President Cleveland to NOT ANNEX the Hawaiian Islands into the United States of America. The speech was filled with numerous reasons why annexation would become problematic for both the local natives and the U.S. After hearing this well delivered speech, I was more than impressed with Grover Cleveland's remarkably clear vision of the unforeseen problems that first annexation and then American statehood would surreptitiously bestow upon Hawaii's native shores.
