[I lost over $250 worth of seeds, from simply having these close to my other plants- over 2 acres away from these "things", and every single plant.. was "messed up", in some way.] Veg, fruits, several dozen flowers, etc. Those who are, "praising" this.. will "find out the hard way", inevitably & "in time".

@@langstroth9334 yes, "beit alpha/alpha beit" and they go by other names but essentially, they ruin the other plants around them! Others said: "Do NOT plant these near, around, next to ANY other types of plants, within a 1 mile radius." [..and of course, I- didn't listen.. so #LessonLearnedTheHardWay.] "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." (I'm taking it upon myself, to do my own due diligence & to understand the "nderlying/hidden" aspects, that most "don't WANT to talk aboht/discuss" etc. that way, it WONT happen again. I had that funny feeling when I was planting them out, 'don't do it girl... don't do it.' ..and I SHOULD have listened to it. I- did not, so I "lost".) You would have to go look at others who are complaining about this but from what I have gathered, my own experiences with "hybrid seeds/plants", I that they "change taste, flavor, the structures inside other veggies/fruits, ANY chance of seed production you're hoping to yeild/receive from the plants nearby to the 'hybrid' plants.." I'll go grab the terms I used to find where/what/how this happens. [Garden centers, "Influencer Garden Guru's", who- hardly utilize the ENTIRE environment around plants, microbiomes, pollination methods/cross-pollination risks, etc all at once.] Sorta like horticulturists/agriculturists.. but even MOST of those people [sadly & unethically] are what's called, "#InstitutionallyBiased" due to things that have, "been left out, hidden, hush-hushed, on purpose".

You can make Agua Fresca with extra cukes! Blend peeled and chopped cukes with water. Blend lemon juice with sugar in a separate bowl. Add to blender with cukes. Add mint or cilantro or both. You can strain the blended cucumber water if desired before adding sugar/ lemon mixture. It’s very tasty and refreshing.

For prevention of powdery mildew, use 2-1/2 cups whole milk per gallon of water. Spray all plants that are susceptible to powdery mildew once per week. This has worked better for me than anything else I have ever tried!

This year I planted double cucumbers on a arch trellis made of cattle wire! Giving the heavy cucumbers a great place to climb amazing results picking at least 6 to 10 cucumbers every other day my tomatoes are abundant also but they are not ready to pick but are huge slicers can not wait to eat them so I have been making cucumber juice with honey and lime and mint water very refreshing drink for summer hot days!

I'm growing beit alpha (Persian) cucumbers for the 2nd year now and they're great. I pick them at half the size you showed in the vid, and strut around the garden munching on my cucumber cigar. They're growing on the same trellis as Armenian cucumbers, which are easily out-producing the beit alpha's.

@@chrischen9589 sorry for the year late response, but beit alphas are self pollinating and do not have separate male and female flowers like most other variety of cucumbers. I don’t think the Armenian cucumbers can cross with them anyways because they’re more typical gourd than cucumber gourd.

Probably the best cucumber production video I’ve ever watched. I’m an old experienced gardener and I’ve never heard of the beit alpha variety. I’m going to try and find seeds and give them a try. My wife and I make a LOT of pickles and this variety is very interesting. We always have pretty good production with normal varieties but I’m going to give these a try. I'm glad to hear that! This is my favorite variety of cucumber. They are delicious, prolific, and they last later into the season than most. I also like the China Jade variety, which are close to a yard long, but also parthenocarpic with high yields and good heat tolerance. I'd recommend them both, but the China Jade won't be as good for pickles if you like to make whole pickles. You'd have to slice them since they're so long.

@@daphnemitchell7817 Here’s the recipe for 1 QUART. I usually multiply it since we make so many. You can use cucumber spears or slices. You can leave out the crushed red pepper if you don’t like spicy stuff. They’re not hot just a little warm after you eat a few. Boil: 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1 cup water 1 1/2 Tbs kosher or canning salt In jar place: 2 tsp dill weed 2 tsp red pepper flakes (if desired) 2 cloves of garlic or 2 tsp minced garlic 2 sprigs of fresh dill Fill jar with cucumber spears or slices. Pour boiling brine into jar and leave a half inch of head space. Put on lid and ring finger tight and let jar cool. Turn jar upside down after a half hour or so. You can divide the ingredients into 2 pint jars if desired. Best to let them sit two or three days before opening so they get more flavor. Hope you enjoy them. We certainly do.

I grow the passandra cucumbers. They are a UK variety and I live in NTX. We got tons of rain this spring and those plants are growing like champs. I planted four plants and they all germinated and growing like crazy. I just harvested three cucumbers and there are several more growing to maturity with baby cucumbers all over the vine. I plan to harvest the seeds and regrow those next year...God willing these will become accustomed to the NTX weather and become a new variety.

I grew Beit Alpha last year for the first time and everything @themillenialgardener said is true. From 1 plant, I had 60+ cucumbers. It didn’t get powdery mildew until close to the end of the season and it still kept producing. I’m growing again this year.

I grew cucumbers for the first time last summer and grew Beit Alphas and was amazed how many I ended up with. From now on I will not grow any other variety. I grew them for salads and ended up just snacking on most of them straight from the plant. They are completely bitter free and delicious 😋 even kids like them! Another very productive cucumber like the variety in the video is “Muncher”-I’ve grown them for several years. Last year (2021) I got hundreds of cucumbers from only 8 plants-enough for fresh eating, giving away to neighbors, and canning 30 quarts of dill pickles. Munchers make great pickles.

@@peachieledbetter4550 I’ve used them for dill pickles, relishes, bread and butter pickles, and refrigerator pickles. They are wonderful in every recipe I’ve tried. Pick them at 3 to 6 inches for best pickling. They are also great and crispy eaten fresh.

My Chinese mum in law showed me how to take the bitterness out of a cucumber. Slice the end off and rub the cut sides together. A light sap will start to develop. Rinse off the sap and use.

I'm glad it was helpful! Yes, the secret to growing cucumbers is to harvest them early and often, and NEVER let them get large or turn yellow. Once the cucumber plant thinks it made mature seed, it dies back, so picking all your cucumbers when they're young and small has the cucumber plant desperately forcing its energy into fruit production to make mature seed. You're tricking the plant into over-producing, and cucumbers taste best when young and crisp, anyway! Thanks for watching.

First time I decided to try grow cucumbers, I bought a cheap punnet of four seedlings. 52 kgs later (114 lbs), I received several death threats from my family, friends & neighbours to whom I was giving surplus stock. There were so many, people were sick of eating cucumbers. Since that year though, I've tried growing several types together, and all have failed. Your great video has now given me the answer. Stick to one type. I heard good things about Beit Alpha also, and was thinking of growing them this year. Think I will now. Thanks again. PS Lots of watering is another secret to getting lots of cucumbers. I was giving a gallon each, every night, and picking 2.5lbs on average for a period of 40/60 days.

As long as you keep pollinators out of the flowers, they won't cross-pollinate. Agfabric sells large lengths of insect netting for low prices.

@Margaret D, How'd that ultimately work for you? I've found the rain doesn't penetrate tulle well, but if you aren't relying on rainfall for most of your watering, that wouldn't matter. I also found that the tulle abraded my plants a lot more so I needed to support it to keep it from touching most of my plants. I'd love to know your experience!

UPDATE: Problem solved! I've been growing 2 individual plants in 5gal grow bags for months, plus a parthenocarpic zucchini version too. Super prolific, tasty, and decease free here in SoCal late November (zone 10a) ..still putting out plenty. Will definitely start a new rotation for spring and summer.

From Jonny's seeds cucumber guide I get the impression that it's ok for parthenocapic varieties to be pollinated. They produce seedless fruit if unpollinated and will produce seeds if pollinated. Seeds might be undesirable, but I don't think it would otherwise affect the fruit quality of that year, just later generations of the resulting hybrid. I haven't tested this yet though, so I may be wrong. Trying it this year :)

Seed won't grow true to the parent plant because of the added genetic material from the pollination. The harvest is great but you have to buy new seeds every year.

One of my helpers at the farm was talking about it as though he had seen them before. I took his word for it and although he didn't remember the name, I happened to watch this video later that day and here the expert discussed the exact thing. 😊

Don't use pesticides on your lawn, stop pulling dandelions, plant clover in your lawn, buy a few butterfly bushes, and other flowers that attract pollinators. I have raised lemon cukes and although they are not the most productive, they are SO tasty with a thin skin and small size that is perfect. How many times have you used half a cuke only for it to rot in the fridge? Not an issue with lemon cukes.. They are my favorite variety.

Love this. I have been gardening for over 50 years. I didn't know parthenogeneic cucumbers existed. What's also strange, I bought a packet of beit alpha seed just to see how they grow. There were only the usual general instructions on the pack. If I had not seen this video, I would have screwed up the planting. Now all I have to do is find out how far I need to plant from my other cucumbers. Thank you!

That's interesting and very neglectful on the seed supplier, in my opinion. This is why I buy almost all my seeds online, now. Packet descriptions leave a lot to be desired. I want to read a full page description online. Baker Creek has 4 or 5 different types of parthenocarpic cucumbers. I am growing 2 different parthenocarpic cucumbers this year: Beit Alpha and China Jade. I'm also going to grow Yard Long, but they'll be spread on the other side of my garden far away from the others.

Hi. I’m new to your channel... Very informative! Thank you so much for sharing. I’m a new gardener and love cucumbers & although I didn’t know this information before, I did know I’d need plenty of pollinators so I planted. I planted marigolds, basils, and other vegetables and flowers that attract bees; I have lots of bees! I didn’t have any issues growing my cucumbers though I didn’t get a single zucchini!!! I will try this cucumber next year! We could never have enough. You can make the agua fresca as several people have suggested, dill cucumber pasta salad is delicious too. As a snack or appetizer we very often, if not daily, have sliced cucumbers with lime, salt and a little hot pepper powder! 😋

I haven't seen truly parthenocarpic varieties, but Costata Romanesco has shown to be able to self-pollinate with some success. It's working well for me this season.

I enjoyed your info about growing cucumbers. I live in Los Angeles, and there're lots of Persian populations living in L.A. I always go to the Persian market to get Persian cucumbers, they're so crispy, delicious and yummy. It's has been a few years that they sell them at most grocery stores, I've used it for salads and sandwiches, I also eat it unpeels with salt.

Guess what? You can CAN cucumbers! One year I had an abundance of both cukes & cherry tomatoes. Halved the cherries & quartered the cuke slices. Trust me, I was guessing the whole time. That winter my mom came over for dinner & brought a salad. I opened & drained one jar of the combo & the flavor exploded w/each bite. No need to waste. Thanks for explaining more on cukes! Ohio

I'm glad to hear it was helpful! Cucumbers are a vine, so if you're container gardening, you'll need to find a way to grow this up a trellis. You'll probably need at least a 6-8 ft tall trellis. You can grow cucumbers on the ground, but they tend to have a lot of pest and disease pressure when you let the vines sprawl all over the ground, especially if you get a lot of rain. If you do decide to grow them on the ground, I recommend letting them sprawl on a weed barrier like I did with my watermelon in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3LHaYeAYrKmp6c The weed barrier helps prevent pests and disease by keeping them off the dirt.

We planted this cuke last year and got quite a few small cukes from it. We're near Cleveland, OH and I was pleasantly surprised since they're in a container with a trellis. It's been a cold spring here, but I'll be planting more of these this week. I originally got them because I saw a video somewhere about them & how they were developed on a kibbutz in Israel and I liked that. Thanks for all the info. This was very interesting. I grew “Muncher” last year and was very happy with them. I live in the Pacific Northwest and I haven’t generally had much success with cukes. I blame our cool nights.

Cucumbers really dislike cool nights. They want to be over 55F (preferably over 60F) at all times. Last winter under my hoophouse, I grew tomatoes and cucumbers. The hoop house typically fell into the 38-40F range at night. The tomatoes did just fine, but all the cucumbers died. They didn't stand a chance. It takes a frost/freeze to kill peppers, tomatoes, eggplant and other tender annuals, but temps in the 40's can kill cukes. I think Beit Alpha would do well for you since they mature so quickly and are parthenocarpic. I think small cukes would do best. I bet pickles could perform well, too.

I learned something new here. I didn't know there were differently pollinated Cucumbers. I have the Beit Alpha ones just starting. I didn't know not to have another type of Cucumber in the same yard. Ill have to decide what to do now.

You can grow more than one variety, but you'll want to space them on opposite ends of your garden as far from each other as possible. Try to get at least 30 feet, but more is better. If you cannot achieve a large spacing, simply cover the plant in insect netting or light agricultural fabric. If you can keep bees out of the flower using fabric or cloth, there will be no risk of cross-pollination. Also, if you're only growing parthenocarpic varieties that only have female flowers, then you can grow whatever you want because there will be no male flowers to pollinate, so no worries!

Great information. It is pronounced 'bait' and was named after the kibbutz where it was developed. If you have lots of produce sometimes a local food pantry will accept them. I've had better luck with smaller ones (sometimes associated with religious organizations) rather than a big food bank. This is the first of your videos I've seen and you gave clear, concise info and have a good presentation but to be honest, I'm subscribing because you kissed your dog. That is enough to tell me you're worth watching.

The great thing about this variety is you don't have to spend the time hand pollinating. The downside is it's the only type you can grow in proximity, so if you like growing many varieties it's a bit of a bummer. To me, this variety is the best I've tasted and I have no need for others, but if you like growing pickling types as well, it's a downside.

I've been growing cucumbers since 2017 and never heard about the usual low numbers of female vs. male flowers on a plant. I also hadn't known that the female flowers can be distinguished by having the beginnings of a cucumber at the base. Recently I'd noticed that there seemed to be tiny cucumbers near the ends of some of my vines but BEFORE there was anything close to an open flower. Now this makes sense. Even though the video was really helpful, I ultimately ended up subscribing because I appreciate that you were nice to Dale when he got into the video! He seems like such a nice, peaceful dog. Is he a great dane?

Cucumbers germinate in about 3-4 days and will begin to produce in 45-60 days depending on how hot your summers are. I already have my third crop started in pots. So yes, you'll probably be fine. Give it a shot!

I would advise against that. A 5 gallon bucket is too small for an indeterminate tomato in my experience. They demand too much water and dry out too quickly in the heat of the summer. A 5 gallon bucket is ok for a determinate or dwarf tomato, though. It will be too small for both a cucumber and tomato plant. I recommend #7 grow bags for determinate and dwarf tomatoes and #20 grow bags for indeterminate tomatoes. If you want to grow a tomato and cucumber in one bag, you may want to look at #25 grow bag.

It's a great cucumber. You may want to try bird netting or insect netting to cover them. It's really inexpensive and can prevent that.

Not that I've seen. Some companies may state it in their description, though. Baker Creek does. We have to just KNOW as the consumer. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad information out there. I've seen lots of negative reviews on this variety being bitter, ugly and seedy, and it's because the people planting it are growing it nearby other cucumber varieties, so it become cross-pollinated, which ruins the fruit. It's actually user error, but there is an information gap out there, and most people (understandably) don't know this stuff off the tops of their heads. Seed companies should do a better job informing people as to what they're buying.
