Note to self: - Mix a 1.5:1 ratio of substrate:spawn. - For the casing, add enough substrate to the top to bring the total ratio of substrate:spawn to 2:1.

*This is not necessary* , I'm adding this so those that don't know, can learn (I'm still learning too 😊). The 0.5 sub you add to cover the mix is a pseudo-casing. The most common (lazy) casing is a 50/50 jiffy casing...50% Jiffy **Organic** Natural Seed Starting Mix and 50% substrate. The Tek for the casing preparation says to add the casing when you see the (pseudo-casing) 50-80% colonized but before 100%...although, I've also seen one post that stated it can be added when you see pins forming ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. At this point, just very gently, add the casing mix loosely on top. Since YT doesn't like links in comments, for anyone that wants to, just search " jiffy mix casing "

@Stay.Shroomy For some reason our sub to your channel was removed. But, found you and resubbed. Good to see that the videos are still up. So much good information, contrary to many of the grifters in the 'home mycology' scene. You and@StipeCap in particular. Thank you for everything that you do.

I've had several channels get removed from youtube over the years from censorship. I think I've got it figured out now, though, and should have this channel around for a long time!

From the Philippines here. I do the exact same tek but I don't use a casing layer. Works a lot better in my experience. Set and forget. As long as the temp and humidity is good you'll get plenty of fruits!
@nathancks2 ай бұрын
Here's what I've noticed: no casing layer is faster and works better if you can really dial in your grain, and substrate moisture content. The casing layer just helps imperfections from making substrate and grains, so it provides a little microclimate to help it. But yes if you nail the substrate and spawn then no casing layer is perfect

once the grain is completely colonized its pretty hard for it to get contaminated right?

Thanks, good stuff as always! Thanks in part to you, I'm moving to a dedicated mono tub grow cycle and so far loving it. Definitely going to try the spawn to fruit approach. Was wondering if you have experimented with adding a casing after initial colonization)? It has worked well for me so far, but not much data to go on. Using a Jiffy/CV blend to create a little different PH at the surface. Mush appreciation! 🍄

What is the substrate? I can’t get vermiculite in my country. Can you use whole grain?
@ObakuZenCenter6 күн бұрын
Use plain, hyrdated Coir for substrate. Vermiculite isn't absolutely necessary. For the spawn, you can use many grains, including bird seed, ordinary brown rice from the store (not the microwave kind), oats, rye, all kinds. The key is getting clean spawn, by using agar/liquid culture and getting clean mycelium to put to grain. Then fully colonized, clean spawn to substrate and essentially just leave the tub alone for about a week.

Hey new follower here. what's the advisable humidity needed indoor?
@Stay.Shroomy3 ай бұрын
normal regular living conditions. gauges dont gizmos don't really help us as they tend to misread what is really important. its best to just use a tried and true fruiting chamber design, trust the process, and look for signs from the mushrooms for any needed adjustments.

Very nice! Do you blot the surface drops with a paper towel at 4:24 in the video or just leave them alone? Thanks.

just leave it, the fruits will need all that water eventually.

@Stay.Shroomy15 күн бұрын
Naw its not the light thats the issue. Its when the substrate naturally shrinks that it creates an ideal microclimate. The liner sticks to the sun while it shrinks to eliminate that issue.
@risingpheonix21823 ай бұрын
What do you do about the water that pools at the sides of the chamber bc of condensation ?
@Stay.Shroomy3 ай бұрын
I remove the entire tub to harvest by grabbing the corners of the liner. while the tub is empty, I dump the water out.

I wonder if anyone has lab tested potency using coir vs manure based substrates?
@ObakuZenCenter6 күн бұрын
There is no advantage to using manure for cubes. In fact there are more negatives to doing so. The grain used for the grain spawn is the bulk of the nutrient source. It provides all that the mycelium needs. The substrate is mainly a water reservoir. Coir, being fairly inert is just about perfect, naturally resistant to contamination to some degree, cheap and easy to find and use. Coir also does not require pasteurization.
@tommroy6 күн бұрын
@@ObakuZenCenter I believe you are correct, just had an amazing flush od ODPE using just CVG. Grew some storm troopers too and felt that the sub needed a little nutrition for that particular strain.

That’s way to much grain spawn your wasting your spawn you could use far less and make a substrate base to get a foothold in
@ObakuZenCenter6 күн бұрын
Not how it works. The more spawn, the better the yield tends to be. The grain is the nutrition for the mycelium. The substrate isn't. It's essentially a water reservoir.
