grow sweet potatoes vertically experiment

I'd like to contribute to the information here. I grow multiple varieties of sweet potato vertically every year in zone 7 Arkansas, on a flood plain. The key is to start your slips in a mound with roots buried deeply, 8+ inches from the top of the mound. Then let the vines grow wide and over an arched trellis, so as not to shade out the lower foliage. I get 15+ lbs of sweet potato per slip using this method.

@@Polarcupcheck Good luck! I just finished up my summer season and am moving to indoor aquaponics. The reason I suggest planting the slip and roots so deep is because of Arkansas red/grey clay. Root vegetables planted in the ground here have a tendency to settle on top of this layer, about 6" deep. I've found that planting 2" into the clay allows them to push below and through it.

I tried it last year and the results were not very impressive. They were very time consuming and needed a lot of help. Lots of vines, but they finally won and I let them go. Harvest was not so good either. They were decorative though so if you have the extra space, go for it. Personally I decided to continue with the normal MGM method - always a great harvest! Hope you learn something new from your experiment.
