I'm in Zone 9, and I have to put netting over my strawberries early in the season to keep the squirrels from destroying them. It looks ugly, but I can take it back down later in the summer after other wild plants have started making fruit/nuts for the squirrels to eat. Without netting they'll dig them up looking for buried acorns or whatever. I'd guess you've got a rodent of some kind doing the same thing to your strawberries. Love the videos and can't wait for the zucchini recipes!

Squirrels & rabbits. Squirrels will dig up anything looking for, or planting nuts. Bone meal placed all around the rim of the container (careful! bone meal will burn roots, so not too close to the plant!) will keep the pesky critters away. If it's rabbits, they nibble at anything and will cut plants down as fast as a herd of deer! Hardware cloth (welded wire mesh or chicken wire) is your friend. Get some, shape fences, hoops & enclosures that you can remove and replace with ease and will keep the critters out! Thanks for your vids, I love them!

Love the garden vids. I watch food and garden stuff pretty equally, but hadn't seen this side of the channel. The honesty is cool too.. you're improving, but not a pro, and you own it. I saw your tomato plant in the water retaining container in a previous video and wondered what would come of it, so it was cool to see a follow-up even if it was a failure. I planted tomato plants in multiple types of containers and beds and the ones in "earth-boxes" or water retaining containers basically drowned too.

My newest hack is to make cuttings when the plants start to get a bit leggy (Even with proper maintenance they get tall) You will need at least three sets of leaves. Cut just below the third set and remove that set of leaves. Place the cuttings in a glass of water (preferably filtered, plants are not fond of Chlorine) to speed up the root process you can set the cup on a growing heat pad or I just use a heating pad for back issues. Low heat. Also you can put a full spectrum grow light above the cutting. If you don’t hav those things no problem, it will just take a little longer for the roots to develop. After about a week you will start to see roots growing. Let them grow as much as possible, patience, the dip them in rooting mix such as rootone and plant in small pots filled with regular potting mix. I do this all summer and winter. From three ugly scrappy plants this year I propagated around twenty. You can give them to friends. also if you place the cup on the kitchen counter you will always have fresh basil to cook with. Caio

Vespasian Closcan I had issues with cutworms and slugs eating my basil earlier this season. I spread coffee grounds around all my basil plants (and other plants) and that resolved the issue. Regarding ants, I've found bay leaves work, as well as used lemons...good excuse to make lemonade.

@@appalachiafishingclub I've heard that a bowl of beer will attract slugs and they will drown in it. I once set a keg of home brew out on the deck, on a bench overnight to condition and the next morning there were three slugs that had managed to climb up the side of the keg looking for the source of the smell (?). Either the slugs are attracted to a fresh IPA or I have the same taste in beer as a slug...

Glad you posted this when you did, I literally had this question this morning. I’m growing basil as well, and was cutting the flowers off, but the stems now look very thick, the leaves are not as bushy, just as you mentioned. If I cut it back a bit, will that “fix” it? Right now it only seems to be producing flowers even after I cut them. Is this “reversible” or do I need to just start over?
