I plant three times as many cucumbers as I need. When they all start coming in at the same time I pick and pickle. Then I pull 75% of the plants so I'll have fresh cucumbers all year. That way I get my pickles and I don't have way too many fresh. Plus you have room for another crop.

All of the first flowers should be pinched off which simply means removing them from the plant. This can be done with fingers (literally pinching them) or with pruning shears. I do this for the first 3-4 weeks after transplanting to let the plant just put out foliage growth

Can someone pls answer a question?? I heard some plants are done with their life cycle once they flower. And how you should pick the flower heads to keep them producing longer, or to help young plants grow bigger, so all the energy is going to the foliage and not the flower... such as with cucumber & pepper plants. So I picked all the first flowers of my young bean plants... but then saw a vid saying to pick excess foliage to spur more flowers to grow. I'm so confused. When should you pick the flowers and when not to ....and on which plants?? I'm growing so many things and this part is so confusing. 😒

Curious if cucumbers have to be pollinated? Wanted to plant in Greenhouse, over winter.
@MindandSoil
@MindandSoil Жыл бұрын
They do! But you can hand pollinate them by using a QTip and taking the pollen from the male flower over to the female flower. Additionally, since it will be winter you'll want to make sure you're heating the greenhouse to at least 70F/20C for them to do well, and to help them grow to their absolute fullest potential a grow light is massively helpful!
@johndehate5659

That's an outstanding harvest! I would have been in a similar range but we can't compare cucumbers to cucumbers just on this one factor as there are so many other variables at place (amount of light, soil, nutrients, etc.) so what I would encourage you to do for this season is plant 1/2 your cucumbers and don't remove any of the flowers. And for the second half remove flowers for the first 60 days of their growing time and compare from there!

Vermiculite retains moisture while perlite does not. So more often than not I prefer to have mediums that retain moisture in my beds, such as vermiculite :)

Sometimes my cucumbers end up with a bitter taste. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Hey Trish! Bitter cucumbers is usually a sign of stress (the plant trying to push out the growth more quickly than natural/normal). I would increase the amount that you're watering as a starting point. Beyond that, if you haven't used worm castings and 444 Superfood then I would give them a good feed to ensure they have all the nutrients they need! Those would be my first two starting points :)

You could try a different variety, I've abused some "Baby F1"s and they've still given me amazing cucumbers I believe the smooth ones are generally less bitter

Bitterness is caused by inconsistent watering. Your cucumbers may or may not need more water, but what they definitely do need is for the moisture level to stay more or less the same throughout the growing season. Vermiculite mixed with your soil and surface mulching help a great deal.

do not pick the first flowers off, itll stunt your plant big time. youll put it on pause for 3-4 weeks wich is not a good idea especially if you have winter climates or frost for 6+ months outa the year. those 3-4 weeks matter

Depending on where you live and other variables, yes. Some people do it and have great results, others not so much. Try it with a couple plants and see how they compare to the rest. That's the only way you'll know for sure.
