I’ve had an herb garden for about 19 years now. I grow rosemary, ginger, chives, patch of lemon balm, lavender, sage, different varieties of thymes and basils, dill, tarragon, German oregano, parsley, bay leaf, opium lettuce, and mint. In addition, I grow a few veggies, but I live in an apartment and only have a six by 10 garden so there’s not much more room. It is very rewarding, however to grow and learn the uses for each herb and also have the joy of not having to pay for fresh herbs and share my bounty with grateful family and neighbors! @@ednabpurcell-diaz9124 Yes! Many of my herbs are in pots because I have to take them in for the winter and they do fine. I just have to be careful to make sure they don’t dry out since that happens quicker when they’re in pots. Good luck!

You forgot how peppermint deters mice. We've had a mouse explosion in my neighborhood, and peppermint around the house really helps!

Ya totally need an outdoor cat. Definately don't feed them more than necessary because they'll eat on those mice. I really want one strictly for a house guard. I certainly do not want a litterbox, though. I'm thinking I'll try my hand at teaching a cat to communicate about needing to go out to relieve itself except for nights too cold for it. Then a temporary overnight litterbox.

Another plant in the mint family that is good to grow and have on hand is Catmint,(Catnip). Like Lemon balm it has powerful sedative properties to help you sleep. I used to live and work on a farm where in front of the barn there was a plot of Catnip that had been growing for many years. Every night before I went to bed I would go pick off a few leaves and make some tea. Before long I would start to feel as though I’d just taken a prescription sleeping pill. (In case any of you are wondering……… No, it will NOT make you run in circles and chase your tail!!😏

Thank you for sharing. I’ve had trouble sleeping almost my whole life, and I prefer using natural medicines. I have Lemon Balm, Chamomile, and Lemongrass growing, and they help some. This year I’ve added Tulsi Basil to the mix, and now I’ll add Catnip to the mix. ❤️

@@sallyjenkynjones4623 Try cutting a handful, tie it up in some cheesecloth. Start the water in your bathtub and hang the cheesecloth so the running water hits it. You can then just let it float around in the water! It smells so good! You could also enjoy a cup of lemon balm tea as you soak. Enjoy!

From medicinal herbs that I forage, I absolutely love yarrow, mugwort, self-heal, red clover, cleavers and nettle. Culinary favourites are oregano, rosemary, thyme and parsley.

I have a freeze dryer and I have a plan for my herbs I will freeze dry them I am really amazed at how much freeze-drying saves the actual flavor of foods I’m excited and can’t wait until my herbs are ready to harvest so that I can do this I love it!!!

Due to our limited space we container garden. It's been only 4 wks my husband planted our herbs. I love chives and have been using them in my beds for 30 years. The bees go crazy for the flowers, plus the flowers are wonderful mixed in freshly whipped butter. All of my neighbors have been blessed with a pot full of chives from my herb garden as well. We use them in pasta sautés, salads, in potatoes, on fish, you name it we do it! I also have the other herbs from your video as well and reap the benefits with every meal we make. Thank you for the gray videos!

Im having a sabbatical in the veggie garden this year so the whole emphasis is going to be building up medicinal herb beds. I already have many culinary herbs but accidently killed the rosemary last year when I forgot to cover it for the winter (zone 6a, Kansas City suburbs). I have never grown lemon balm before and am looking forward to it. I also have a lime balm plant ordered, so exciting! I love herbs and flowers in the garden. It feels like returning to my first love in the garden by not making growing food as the main thing. Im looking so forward to this, your video was like a little taste of promise of the things to come.

I’m doing the very same. I bought this house which came with a piece of land, with the idea of having a small forest garden, trees, fruit bushes and herbs. I then started annuals and it lost its way, as did I. I’ve just planted five new fruit trees and some more herbs and got it back on track. I’m concentrating on my original plan two years ago and have cut back the annuals and replaced with perennials. I’m trying to downsize the work as much as anything, annuals are so labour intensive. I’ve started making tinctures out of my herbs and always dry some for tea throughout the winter. I’ve just started a dandelion tincture as well. I’m about to turn my old chicken coop into a small polybox to over winter some chard and spinach but decided things like potatoes are overrated. I can buy a sack that lasts all winter for £5, or give myself grief and grow a few. Fruit and herbs will be my main crops, they mostly look after themselves. Good luck with your herbs.

I grow all five successfully as perennials in northern Indiana. I've found that among the mint family only peppermint, spearmint and orange mint come back annually. Occasionally lemon balm comes back depending where in the garden it overwinters. Other mints need to come inside in my Zone 5 weather conditions. I would add rosemary to my list but I've never been able to have it live thru the winter here unless it's brought inside. Great vlog! Thank you.

I also make a salve from lemon balm, olive oil and beeswax. It works like neosporin but natural, not petroleum based. Also, the salve helps with pain or itching. It actually helped a family members eczema.

@@shelianettles9554 - yes, I fill a half pint jar with lemon balm, cover with oil and let set it a dark cupboard for 6-8 weeks. Then I strain the oil and heat it slowly in a half pint clean jar in a pan of water on low heat adding about a 1/3 cup beeswax. When the wax is melted, it’s done. I make a new jar every year and I haven’t had it go bad in a years time.

Rosemary is my absolute favorite!! I use it for seasoning, for a steam when congested, for greenery decoration throughout the year, accent on gift wrap, put in salt for flavored salt, or the same with oil, in bath water, etc.

Hi! I am in Arkansas, zone 6. Did you know that Lemon Grass can be grown from a stem and bulb from the Health food or Asian Food stores. I grew several in a large pot and they grew quite tall and bushy. Before freezing I cut them and wound them in circlets and hung to dry. My cat even likes chewing on them. Can be used for tea, Philippine Lemon Chicken and I am sure many other recipes.

First veg garden, got beautiful sage plants, drinking sage tea, cold lemon and sage, have dill, parsley but went out and got lots of herb seeds, to grow in containers all winter, have lights in Canada. Hooked, they smell so wonderful. Having hard time finding lemon balm and that's the one I need, suppose to help with thyroid problems. We grew lemon balm for the first time last year. It was easy to grow, spread like crazy, and was heaven to smell.

The orange mint got out of control and was all over my back yard but I have to say that when I mowed it down to reclaim the area it exuded the most wonderful fragrance that one spontaneously inhales as deeply as possible! No way will I attempt remove it! I’ve got aromatherapy under my feet! Beautiful mountain mint is a tall swath of flowering subtle green which provides such enormous entertainment for observing the bees and butterflies that visit throughout the day. Rosemary, lavender and the mountain mint combined in one big bouquet makes a wonderful gift which is always received with wonder and appreciation by the recipients. This same bouquet provides a clean fresh air fragrance within the walls of my modest bungalow. Stacy and Doug are more than Off Grid Newbie’s but an excellent example of how to be married and love one another their children and grandchildren and all the critters. Hmmm. Come to think of it, seems to me that they are a modern day version of Adam and Eve! May you and your loved one’s live long productive, joyful and satisfying lives. Lemon balm likes to travel. Make sure you trim it back before it flowers and sets seed. It is also a pain to dig out when it spreads by root. It got away on my property, seeded itself into the wooded edges, but I prefer it there than in my main gardens. 🌱

Society Garlic: Can eat the whole plant, flowers, stem and bulbs and is a perennial. Awesome plant here in North Carolina.
