Perhaps the most popular plant for any vegetable gardener is the tomato. It’s the first food most beginners attempt to grow. It’s the one that many experienced veterans still try to perfect each season. It is the iconic crop of the summer garden. Yet it’s also one of the hardest to nurture all the way through to harvest without fighting pests and diseases in route to that bountiful harvest we all dream of. In this episode, we’ll shadow an expert tomato grower, Craig LeHoullier from planting to harvest to get practical tips from one of the most respected experts and learn unique and innovative growing methods for dealing with a variety of challenging conditions.

I’d love to see Craig’s favorite tomato seed saving method. I’ve seen a ton of variations and clearly whatever he does is working really well!

Great suggestion! Have you been to his website to see if he already has a video on that? Nctomatoman.com

This is my all time favorite episode! Watching it again today made me remember something my father told me many years ago….My grandfathers favorite tomato was Bonny Best. I’m 71 years old and this is a great feeling. I’m ordering a pack of seeds from Baker Creek right now. Thank-you

Really good show. I meet Craig at a Tomatopalooza event. So many tomatoes, so little time. Cherokee Purple is my favorite. Thank you Craig.

What type straw bail does he use and where does he buy it? Great video!

Thanks. He gets his straw bales at the box stores or local hardware stores we he can find them there. But he doesn’t have a special supplier. Just what’s on the truck.

You definitely need to start seeds from some good companies. Totally Tomatoes, Johnnys, Territorial Seed are great options to get you started. Good luck!

Does not a grass mulch rob the soil of Nitrogen as it breaks down.....?
@ggwtv
@ggwtv 2 ай бұрын
No. As a mulch, only the top 1/16th of an inch has any nitrogen depletion. This is true for any natural mulch. The source for this analysis is from Washington State university I believe. But, if you were to mix it into the soil, then yes. That is an entirely different scenario.
