Growing a Tamarillo Plant | Unique Plant | Fruit Tasting

Dwarf Tamarillo are actually a different species than the regular tamarillo. Solanum abutiloides vs Solanum betaceum. I'm currently trying the standard tamarillo, I'll have to bring it inside for the winter since our growing season isn't long enough to produce on the first season.

@@JolleanSmith I got the seeds from a vacation, I grabbed some fresh fruit at a market and saved the seeds. The fruit is pretty good - we'll see how the plant ends up doing. They only germinated in late May/early June, so they're about 12" tall and wide now.

I love the Diesel smell from the leaves :D and i absolutely love it to take 5 fruits at once in my mouth its like sweet jelly with an very unique flavor

Yea they are not frost tolerant, will be an excellent high tunnel experience.

Thank you! There is a funny story behind them. I bought a bunch of them on sale for my ducks, who would not use them. So I was like “what do I do with all these pools?”. Cut the bottoms out, added some dirt and change a soggy part of the garden into a raised bed that is now the quirky blue garden! 🤣

All the tamarillos I tasted so far were of the regular size. They had no bitterness at all. They're slightly sweet and tangy, a mixture of tomato and passionfruit. Great for juices, jams, and even savory sauces.

I could see how these would be great in sauces and jams. It’s possible the bitterness came from the growing conditions.

I saw in another video that the second "wave" of fruit tasted better than the first round for some reason. I'm growing them for the first time this year, so I guess I'll find out.... if I can get it to maturity soon enough in MN.

Im on year two with mine. It taste the same. like sweet poison. interesting flavor that takes some getting used to.

@@jgmopar I am here in Germany in the second year as well with 3 big bushes. First year i had about 5 ripe fruits this year 500 and first i thought they where disgusting but now absolutely love them..... they tastet the same but i get used to :d

@@kugelgnu I think the same for me. The more i ate them the more I like them. I had so much fruit on mine this year. I am in a better place for growing right now so I will see how it does next year. I have mine in a big pot so I can move it around.

Oh fun!! Thanks for watching. And you know I still have one of those plants alive. I put it in the greenhouse it’s in a terrible pot but it refuses to die! Even has fruit on it. Still not convinced the fruit is that great but fun to grow. Happy gardening.

I hate it so much. It's so bitter. I did wait until it almost fell off the plant and was really orange, thinking it would be less bitter, it was a bit, but it was awful. The plant smells sort of like gasoline to me too. I really hope it tastes better in time, I read somewhere that it tastes better after a few years or after it fruits a few times. It's so bad. I'm still holding out that it will taste better. If not, it's coming out, I don't have the space.

Ha! Thank you! Someone gets it like me. Someone commented that the non dwarf variety is better. I cannot attest to it. The one thing I will say is, the birds like it so there is that I guess. Thanks for commenting.

This is dwarf tamarillo, not tamarillo. A tamarillo is a tree tomato and belonged to the obsolete genus “Cyphomandra”. The dwarf tamarillo was in the Solanum genus, both in the same nightshade family, so they’re related.

I had to quickly rewatch this was filmed a while ago but it is highlighted in the video it is a Dwarf Tamarillo. I appreciate the clarification that there are two kinds of Tamarillo’s though. I did not know that! My Dwarf plant is still kicking somehow. It is a little tree for sure.

@@JolleanSmith that’s weird because regular tamarillos are actually very popular in some parts of the world, even in some US States. You should definitely try one, they’re a lot larger and taste different than these. Anyways, fun video!

I may have to hunt a tree down. These rarely taste good. One in 10 is not bitter but that might be an issue with the grower 😂

@@JolleanSmith if you’re into “weird”/exotic fruits, I highly recommend growing Lulo/Naranjilla, scientific name: Solanum quitoense. Amazing fruit for the best juice you’ve never drank. You have to overwinter them though if you live somewhere where you get frost, but it fruits in it’s second year around 1.5 years old so. The plant is also unlike anything you’ve ever se; fuzzy, huge leaves with purple hairs.
