Growing Wild Farm and Garden

4 жыл бұрын

In this video, we're going over how to grow black eyed pea plants, (AKA cowpea, field pea, southern pea, OR crowder pea, depending on where you're from) as well as how I grew mine from seed and how to harvest them!
They are an easy, drought and heat tolerant plant that is so versatile, I've decided to keep growing them on our little homestead!

I have never planted them until 7 weeks ago… first time. I sowed my seeds (Pisum sativum) thick with only maybe 5” between each, not in rows… 8’ square area…. Amazing. I eat the leaves in salad and smoothie. Many pods are yellow now. I’ll check for rattle this weekend. Many new pods growing. So excited. Almost no bug trouble. Hot hear, Tampa. Loved your video and the learning I got from it… thank you. One of the many reasons I love the cow pea is it’s relationship to a beautiful scientist George Washington Carver…. Love his story.

I planted these as a cover crop so probably won't get the pods before I chop them. But I'll cut them at the base and leave the roots in, and use the leaves as chop & drop. So cheap for a bag at the grocery store and it can even be green manure and used in the compost. I'm sold on them now.

Just got a bag of them this year and didnt think they would feel so heavy for such a little bean. I am going to grow these instead of regular garden peas this year.....these and a gazillinon other things. I have no idea what these little guys taste like but il be cooking them up tomorrow with other mixed beans and lentils. Cant wait. Thanks for the vid and greetings from Ireland.

I saw someone put the dried pods in a pillowcase and bash the crap out of them. Then used a fan or leaf blower to separate the pods from the beans, easy-peasy.

You can cut an empty plastic soft drink bottle ( pop) in half and use for mini green house instead of purchasing zip lock bags. Cheers.

Hear hear! I currently have 40 BEP seedlings in cut in half toilet paper rolls set inside an old clear plastic container that had once contained bakery croissants. Reuse is perhaps the most important part of the Reduxe/Reuse/Recycle methodology.

Thank you! I recently planted seeds for my first container vegetable garden but stuck with things we eat already. But store shelves are intermittently thinned so I'm looking to add something versatile and plentiful, thought maybe black eyed peas but didn't no where to start. Needed this info. 👍

Thanks for this great video, just what i wanted to know! Bought them in ab bag with mixed legumes aka other beans, peas and grain and i sorted them. Now i have about 200 of them in pots... OOps! Didn´t think there were so many of them ...Greetings from Europe, where this variety isn´t common (so I could´t buy "seesds")

Cheers! Oh goodness! 200 is a lot but it means a huge harvest and they can be used like snap beans, too (like you probably heard in the vid). Good luck!! (Maybe give a few away, too, lol 😆)

Peas like cool weather and green beans like warm weather. Are black eyed peas like peas or beans when growing?
@GrowingWildFarmandGarden
@GrowingWildFarmandGarden 3 жыл бұрын
They are definitely a warm weather plant!
@mouse9884
@mouse9884 2 жыл бұрын
They do tend to tolerate cooler weather okay as long as it stays above frost Temps. In the south MS we don't plant past August, and Stat again in the spring. They are shallow rooted so keep soil damp in summer. They can tolerate heavy rain as long as soil is well draining (not a lot of clay, add sand) which makes them great spring crops.

How do I get my leaves dark green? Mine are light green?
@GrowingWildFarmandGarden

Could it be nutrient levels? Maybe experiment and add some nitrogen to a small patch and compare results. By the way I don’t know much, just guessing. My leaves are dark green…. Good composted soil where they are, and lots of light.

Wait, a pea is not a bean? I have been misinformed my whole life.
@GrowingWildFarmandGarden

Not necessarily! Actually, the two words bean and pea are often used interchangeably. However, peas are technically the round seeds of a species called Pisum sativum. :)
