THIS IS MY SEED TO PLATE VIDEO ON BLACK EYED PEAS.
Black eyed peas are easy to grow and in many locations you can grow two crops in one growing season. Watch me and see how easy it is.

I love this man. Only know him from KZbin and got to talk to him one time. He was a survivor! Like my mom, I'm thankful he has gone on to be with the Lord. He doesn't have to worry about the woes we're all having to face right now. However, he is still teaching the rest of us !

My AGpa, shelling those is a true test in patience. I did my black beans the same way. It took me three days. My favorite part of your videos is your taste test close up. Someone told me to put the beans/peas in a sheet or tarp and beat it with a stick. Supposedly this shells them all at once. Of course I like to sit and shell. Reminds me of my Mom when we'd sit on the back porch and visit and shell them. Thanks for sharing. I'll grow those next year.

Hello and welcome to my videos. Yes, the deer will eat the peas and vines. You can keep the deer off them by spraying with a product called: Deer Off. Glad to see this knowledge being shared and preserved. Up here in my part of Louisiana outside of West Monroe we prefer fresh pink eye peas but I had a black eye and a black crowder pop up this late summer in my second crop. Going to save them and plant next year. Dad likes the pepper sauce which is just Apple cider vinegar and jalapenos. We use bacon and sautee the onion in the fat. Just had some lady peas from the garden tonight. First time growing them haven't made much with the drought this year but the plants are still green so hopefully get another mess before winter.

I saw your video on growing pinto beans and I started up a line in the dead, dry, compact clay dirt of my small city house backyard. An amazing experiment after I beat the heck out of the hard dirt just so I could bury the beans a little. I’m curious to see how well they will do! They had trouble sprouting through the heavy soil but now a good couple bundles have popped up! I planted them thick so they worked together to push through. Amazing. @OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 4 жыл бұрын
Karin, store bought peas and beans will grow if it hasn't been treated to stop it from sprouting. The best way to find out if it will grow is to do as you say and plant a few seeds in a pot and see if they come up. Another way to be sure they will come up is to buy ORGANIC peas or beans at a health food store such as Whole Foods or Earth Fare or Sprouts. OAG

OldAlabamaGardener I am a little better every day, thank God. Had a setback with edema but I think we’re on the right track now and I have a check up on the seventh. Three different procedures packed a big wallop. They ended up installing the pacemaker in my abdomen, I imagine to keep it away from the coronary artery repair. Today marks four weeks, and recovery typically is 5 to 8 weeks. Thanks for watching out for me!

Many years ago I knew a lady that pickled black eyed peas with vinegar in a Ball jar. I was young then & didn’t pay attention to how she done it. The peas retained their light green color & were crisp not mushy. The taste was exquisite! Open a quart & eat some fast because they are not going to last if anybody else is around. I don’t know if you have ever done this or had any but if you have send me directions! I’m going to wing it this summer & try my best. Hope you do to.

Yum! I think I need to cook up a pot of cowpeas tomorrow. I had never grown blackeye peas or cowpeas until about 4 years ago. I got one seed packet just to try. They were so amazing! Of course, they turned out to be pole type so they went everywhere in my garden but the harvest was outstanding. I've grown them ever since. I think I really will try your process with the blackeye peas and using the soil. Isn't growing your own food the best ever?! Love your videos and wish we could all sit down for a meal together some day. :-)

thank you for this informative video! I want to grow black eyes and harvest before dried to keep in my freezer. Our grocer has those in freezer occasionally; any recommendation on what pods look like at this stage? I love the history of black eyed peas; we especially eat them on New Years.
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 3 жыл бұрын
As my video starts, up to time mark 0:06, in the bottom left corner, you see a light green pea pod. That is the what to look for if you want the peas before they become dry. The light green stage is called the "Shell out" stage, that means the peas are mature but still plump and full of moisture. OAG
