An easy way how to grow broccoli or calabrese in growbags or containers at home, all the way from sowing seeds to harvesting decent broccoli heads.
The same approach can be applied to grow broccoli plants in garden beds or in-ground gardens.
Thank you for watching!

Absolutely! Not only it takes time to grow food, there are plenty things that can go wrong - pests, diseases, weather.. You can always prepare and take precautions, but there is always a chance of "surprise". The side shoots will grow to about size of a fist. But are better to be harvested half that size, for more frequent harvest. Good Luck growing Your broccoli! 🍀🌱

Hello, I wouldn't take any leaves off if they have healthy color. Leaves work to turn energy from sun into food for plants. I mean if Your plants have great foliage and You take one or two bottom leaves off, nothing happens. As long as You don't overdo it. I am only removing leaves when they start to go pale and are no use to the plant anymore.

Hello, if You do it carefully, pulling from top side and pushing from the bottom, it doesn't crush anything at all, because You are using much bigger force to push it then to pull. I understand You point and yes it can damage the plant if You only pull it, but over the years I've kind of feel how much I can pull. Also the soil shouldn't be too wet, to weigh less. Anyway, thank You for pointing out! 🙂

Seems like there's about a 4 month growth period. Nights are below 40 in the spring here, but summers are beastly hot. Do I need to continuously move the plants daily to keep them warm, then cool enough? I planted broccoli outdoors in raised beds last year about April/May, and it didn't even start to produce heads until the end of October, after which it froze. I had zero yield. Made me very sad, 😢 as broccoli is my favorite vegetable.

You'll have to stay your seeds indoors about now, which should give you a June harvest.
@Liap
@Liap Жыл бұрын
Broccoli is all about timing. No, you don't need to move the plants around. Choose a variety that suits your weather conditions, there are plenty to choose from. To maintain soil temperature as stable as possible (especially in containers), use mulch. If the hot weather arrives and your broccoli isn't ready for harvest, water it more frequently to cool down the soil temperature. If you grow broccoli for fall harvest and it looks like it will freeze rather than grow full size head, try covering plants with fabric coverings. I hope some of this helps and you will succeed with your favorite vegetable! 🥦🙂

Hello there. Yes You can do it the way You described, but more efficient way would be to grow it under trees or some kind of shading net. And water frequently. When You cool down the soil, broccoli will be much less prone to bolt. Mulching is another way to help with this. I am growing mines right now under big tree, so they get direct sun from 3pm till sunset. Hope this helps a bit 🙂

Do they get full sun in your growing spot? I didn't know broccoli could take almost four months to grow. The seed packet for my Sun King Hybrid says 70 days!! Is that unrealistic?
@Liap
@Liap Жыл бұрын
Hello, these plants were got roughly 5 hours of direct sunlight, they were grown between houses, so in open ground without any shading objects it would definitely grow more vigorous. It took 4 months to grow from seed, the timing on seed packets is counted from transplanting seedlings most of the time. For example right now I am growing variety called "early green", and it says 60 days to harvest on the seed packet, but the timing is from transplanting seedlings. From seed to transplants is around 3-5 weeks (depends on the length of the day and light intensity). There are many broccoli and calabrese varieties with different time requirements. I hope this helps 🙂 Good luck growing Your broccoli! 🍀🥦

@Liap
@Liap Жыл бұрын
Hello, I am not sure what heavy UK rain is like, but we have pretty rainy autumn over here too and they grew pretty well, considering not full sun positioning. Also depends on the soil, if You grow in good compost, it drains really well. If Your soil is more loamy, that could cause some problems.

Hello, this variety can be grown for big head (but not as big as classic calabrese) and then it will grow smaller heads after harvesting the big one, or you can harvest the main head when it’s smaller (10cm/4inches in diameter) and the plant will grow side heads with much more strength. Very rewarding and also frost resistant variety. I am still growing 2 of these on balcony in 20 liter size containers (they’ve been there whole winter and survived -12 Celsius). Their heads are smaller than the ones grown in autumn, but still 🥦🙂

How deep does the container need to be please?
@Liap
@Liap 11 ай бұрын
Hello, for broccoli plants I'd say at least 30cm (12"). If growing one of early varieties, they could do well even in a bit smaller containers. It also depends on growing conditions, if You have dry summer like I do, be prepared to water them daily in smaller containers as broccoli drinks the pot dry quickly in warm weather.

Hello, yes cauliflower is grown the same way, although You will want to protect the curds from sun, or grow some of the self-blanching varieties.

Hello, the problem will be either in temperature or not having enough water. When broccoli plant is stressed enough, it will bolt, making flowers and seeds in order to create next generation of plants before the conditions (which are stressing it) kill it.

How much will you get from one plant?
@Liap
@Liap Жыл бұрын
This variety is a cross between European broccoli and Chinese kale. It produces one main head and then multiple smaller heads. When you harvest the main head early, the plant will put all it’s energy in growing more “side heads” that can be harvested for longer period od time. So how much you get from one plant depends on the length of Your growing season. And also on growing conditions 🙂

So it takes almost four months to grow a single head? My garden space is very limited so I need to find a high-volume crop
@Liap
@Liap 8 ай бұрын
Hello, well with this variety You can cut the main head earlier (when around fist size) and it will encourage plants to grow side shoots more rapidly, resulting in longer period of harvesting. There are also earlier varieties of broccoli. Though, if You are looking for high volume crops in limited space, spring radishes, leaf lettuce varieties and bush tomatoes would probably be better options.

(Translator)

@@Liap Which varieties are those please?
@Liap
@Liap 11 ай бұрын
@@Mantras-and-Mystics One of the earliest is "Early Green Broccoli" which takes around 60 days from transplant to harvest. I am growing in right now, though the main heads were not formed very well, because we've had very dry a hot weather just before they started to form heads, so some of them ended up knuckled. But it cooled down a bit recently and side shoots are looking fine. If at least those will be good quality, I'll make a video🙂 Another early variety is "Limba", though I think it's only for sale in Europe, not sure. Anyway, any variety that matures in 60-70 days after planting is considered early, by watching at this, You can easily find early varieties for sale in Your location. Hope that helps a bit. 🥦🍀

Why r my broccoli plants so much bigger? The leaves are bigger than my head..
@lexkek5625
@lexkek5625 Жыл бұрын
Broccoli head is just ting flowers so they require more phosphorus to form. If there's too much nitrogen it can cause the plant to produce more leaves instead of a head. Try cutting back on nitrogen if you fertilizer regularly. If that's not the cause it can simply be a weather or time issue. You may just have to wait a bit more. Make sure to keep up watering and protect your broccoli from heat.

I dunno. Seems like alot of money and time for 4$ worth of broccoli. Grow bags, soil, fertilizer and water all adds up. Need alot of soil for those bags.
@Liap
@Liap 5 ай бұрын
Grow bags are reusable, soil is mostly compost, we catch rain water over here (as much as we can), you don't need any fertilizer if growing in compost rich soil mix. I used fish emulsion here and there as far as I remember, but it was far from regulary. It may not be worth growing for You or anyone else. But hey, maybe someone is interested in how broccoli is grown :)

Well, You can plant as many plants as You want to, not just 4. I was growing 5 plants in containers and another 8 in garden. After harvesting main heads, I was harvesting smaller side heads for some more time. Yes You can grow more producing plants than broccoli. Thank you for watching and taking time to leave a comment.
