You can separate butternut seeds from the pulp in the same way you separate pumpkin seeds from "the guts". But the mess in a bowl of water and swirl the contents around for a minute or two. The seeds will separate.

We're sorry to hear that. that's usually a sign of poor pollination. did you have any bees nearby that year? We plant flowers among our vegetable beds to attract pollinators. Last year we planted a hyssop plant that was so successful we joked that the bees were getting drunk instead of doing their real job.
