My butternut is amazing this year! After I first planted the transplants (I put 3 in my hill with lots of compost) I walked out one day and noticed one plant laying flat and looking bad 😧 I checked it out and apparently a vole ate almost all the roots off the one plant….I had planted my last three seeds!! so I picked up what was left of my little BN squash and put the root in water rehab for 2 weeks and then back in the ground she went and she never looked back. That baby is looking good and pumping out fruit. I’m so glad I gave that water root rehab a try.

Growing Butternut Squash for the first time this year. Harvested my first Butternut this week...it is quite large. I've noticed that since I harvested the big one that the smaller ones seem to be doing better. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I just cut them in half and throw em in the oven and they are the best tasting veg ever. The storability is a huge factor in growing these.

Sounds interesting. How long do you put it in the oven and at what temp ?

@@markrodgers1965 reg 350 or 400 for around 45mins- 1 hour. Cut side up. Until tender/soft all the way thru with a fork. Then you can salt pepper a little butter if you like and thats it.

@@jeil5676 thank you , I planted my 1st butter nut squash this year an just found my 1st baby growing its about 8in long so far - but I also noticed in my pumpkins white spots & yellowing which I'm researching now how to cure ? Some say hydrogen proxide spray some say baking soda , b4 I can purchase a sprayer an NEEM OIL . Do u know ,? It's my 1st season growing again since we lost our youngest & only Daughter April ann Ulrich age 19 . @@jtharp9265 Yea J. It sounds like powdery mildew which is common and in my experience inevitable. At this time of year all my early planted squash are being affected and it eventually kills all of them. Its just how it goes. It starts on the oldest leaves and just continues up the plant until it stops growing altogether. Hopefully by then theres some fruit which you can leave on the vine till its ripe or in butternuts case, tan. People have techniques to slow it down but I cant be bothered. The best way to combat it IMO is succession planting so you have a new seedling which wont have the mildew yet and will set fruit. Best done weeks before your older plant slows down. I had a "mystery squash" plant start growing out of my compost this year. I let it be so I could see what it would turn out to be. It ended up being butternut. I have done nothing to care for it other than water it occasionaly when we weren't getting rain (we got a ton this year). It has thrived in the compost pile and has spread out all over. There are a bunch of huge squash on it. I'll be harvesting many of them over the next few days.

All of my squash did amazing this year! I lost a few battles, but I won the war against the squash bugs and vine borers! I have tons of spaghetti squash, butternut squash and mashed potato squash!

Kudos! Never heard of mashed potato squash... sounds interesting. I planted 1 winter squash (by mistake) and it did poorly in the mound I planted it in with 2 pumpkin plants that really grew slowly. Not sure why. No squash there, just a few late blossoms plus 1 pumpkin. Another pumpkin 20 ft away took off like crazy, has 5 pumpkins, plus it has numerous new buds, like every foot. I have to cap that sucker off! Such extremes in these two sets of plants. LOL

What an amazing job you did with your butternut squash. I live in Northern California and I started growimg about 14 plants this year in our community plot. I built a trellis using cattle panels and so far it has worked out well. I sometimes get a few blossom rots and due to changes in the weather (not from lack of pollination since i go to the garden every day to hand pollinate). I use 10-10-10 liquid ferrilizer i bought from Amazon and use it every 2 weeks, but i dont use the granules that you mention. I am starting to get a bit of powdery mildew, which i will start using a fungicide very soon. Thanks for the tip!

I'm growing another variety of C. moschata this year called "Futsu" and it's doing great, no pm at all and it already has ripe fruit here in zone 6. My season is often too short for butternut. Give it a shot if anyone out there likes that sweet smooth butternut taste but lives in a colder area.

Our first planting of squash and zucchini were rather disappointing so we replaced them with different varieties. I'm watching your video on my patio, and I'm also watching those white moths or butterflies. I spent yesterday pinching off caterpillars. My cauliflower and broccoli were perfect and yesterday I came outside and they got 3 Veronica Romanesco cauliflower, they completely stripped off some of the inside leaves.

My moths lay their eggs all over the plant.. some at the base but also the stems, leaves, and the flowers. I tried the foil thing but realized it was useless for me so I stopped doing it. I'm fully expecting to lose mine at some point but for some reason I keep hoping. Definition of insanity I guess!

@@barbmcc1225 LOL. I may wrap the whole dang vine in foil next year!!😂 seriously though. I plant in containers on a stone/rock base. I may see if I can find some old or cheap gutters and fill with soil so the plant can put down those extra roots. Too late this year though

I had room to let my pumpkin grow along a straight line at the edge of my tiny garden and it did put down roots but the SVB kept getting it over and over no matter what I did. I don’t even really like pumpkin I just thought it would be cool to grow but after like 2 months of battling those things I finally had to trash it. I’m being more aggressive with my winter squashes to combat SVB hopefully it works!

I have 3 of these plants in 3 gallon containers planted late maybe 30-40 days and theres 10 fruit on them and another 10 embryo's ready to flower. I have to water every day almost.

I haven't had the oppo to try this yet, but some gardeners are claiming it works. Rather than wrap stem/vines with aluminum foil as a physical barrier to vine borer, try the self-sticky stretchable medical tape. It seems at least 3 rounds of wrap discourage/prevent the borer from piercing the plant stem.

In my experience, if it's already finished growing to full size yes. Here's how: give it high humidity and heat, like 85+. A pan of water in the box with it. You don't want it to touch water or get condensation. Leave it like that for a week or two and it should color up. It won't taste as good or last as long but it'll be fine. If it's younger than that, like with tender skin still, thinly sliced raw butternut is really good with a light vinegrette.

Love winter squash. M growing acorn and butternut. Since retired have time to check for SVB and now M not intimidated. Slice open above and below frass and dig the devil out and walk away. Plant heals without any help. Appreciate the info on water and feeding. Believe I’ve always under watered in past.

I suggest growers spend time looking at seed co info to learn of various winter squash OP & F1 varieties. Some are more resistant to disease than others. I like to read Territorial Seed info on varieties. Good initial info. You can always dive deeper. Also consider smaller varieties & days to maturity to beat the pest /diseas crop cycle & succession planting.

I found 2 squash bugs about 1" long on my Thai Basil. Along with several leaves with eggs on them. They all went into a tub of soapy water. I don't even have squash growing right now, so be observant of your other crops that those buggers could hide on.

Yup- I found one on my potatoes...and a week later the eggs had just hatched and were hiding in the soil...tiny gray colored spider looking bugs. I did a late night walk through and discovered them. I had my neem oil and insecticidal soap ready. I poured it all over the soil. Haven’t seen them since. That was more than a month ago.

I bought a whole butternut squash at the grocery store and, when I cut into it, I found that the seeds had germinated and already had formed some roots. I carefully scooped them out with bits of squash still attached to the roots, then I just dug a hole and placed them in the hole as a tangled mess. I was afraid to try to separate them into individual root balls because it might do too much damage to the roots. It's been about two weeks now, and I thinned out 3 or 4 of the smallest plants, and the remaining ones have started to form their true leaves so I'm hopeful that the vines will be a success.

My winter squash are far less productive than yours - but even with only 1 or 2 squashes per plant, it's the best I've ever done, so I'm pleased overall. I think I need to fertilize and water more - goals for next year!

I stored mine in a dark cool place and mine lasted a year. Best to leave outside to let the skin harden until your fingernail can’t puncher it.

Would it be wise to "thin the herd" as it gets later in the growing season? What I mean is like say I see new baby squashes being formed on the same vine that has squash almost matured on it. If I know those baby squashes wont be mature by first frost, wouldn't cutting them off allow more of the nutrients to be sent to my bigger squash, where they're really needed?

Probably a bit, But I dont know how many to remove to make a significant difference. Best to keep it well watered and let them do their thing. They know what to do to get seeds grown. my squash took a while to start producing this year and are probably 1 or 2 weeks away from being ready. Will a light frost hurt them and if so can they be picked and will they ripen of the vine???

I'm growing pink banana jumbo squash in 5 gallon buckets... but I'm realizing the buckets are not big enough. I'm needing to water like twice a day or they'll wilt in the sun. My main goal is just getting seeds from these... so iv opted to cut the vines right after the first fruit on each plant... so each plant has 1 fruit and I'm pruning all new growth back so the plant can focus on the large fruits. Next year I'll be growing in large mounds... no buckets.

Thanks so much for sharing. I'm in Kingston, Jamaica and sowed butternut squash seeds from Burpee Gardens (eventually thinned to 3 plants) for the 1st time on January 3rd. I followed the hand pollination method and was successful. The 1st squash is growing nicely but now the vine is shriveling and seems to be dying although the fruit still looks healthy. 1 other plant now has a pollinated squash and the other is still only showing male flowers...the vines and leaves look OK but not as lush as yours did....not having any issues with powdery mildew. Please tell me what can I do about the dying vine? They're all getting full sun and are being watered almost daily if there's no rain. Help!!

In my short experience, Butternut and related squash are not killed by squash vine borer. And Buttercups are. All Maximas will be killed by borers.

True for me as well. I lost all but one buttercup to the vine borer even with using BT. My mini butternut are fine. I'm in zone 6 and grow smaller versions of winter squash so that they will ripen before frost.

@@pamelacorsi This year I have grown a buttercup and bush butternuts, and I used BT and I dusted the stems along the ground with Sevin. Very strangely, though, I have seen not a single indication of vine borers at all. It might have more to do with having bagged up all of last years plants and let them sit in the sun, before the borers would have dug into the ground. I don't know. I haven't even seen a single Cucumber beetle, and they were all over the place last year.

I planted butternut and acorn and they have SVB eggs all over them. I have hand-picked the eggs that I could find (stems, leaves, and fruit!), sprayed spinosad and injected BT. I am sick of SBV they killed my pumpkin earlier and also found them on my scallop squash. I have never grown squash before this year so they didn't come from my soil. Anyways, I'm hoping that the tales are true and butternut will not be affected by the SBV but they definitely left their stupid red eggs all over them!

I’m growing mine in 20 gallon pots- the problem I’m having is the female fruit turns yellow and shrivels before the flower has a chance to bloom to be pollinated. Is that too much water? It gets hot here in the afternoons (N CA) so if I don’t water then they dry out too fast. I’m wondering if I used too much pest moss. Any ideas?

No its not to much water. Its just timing. The male and female flowers have to open at the same time basically. It just didnt get pollinated. If it completely not flowering, and you didnt miss it, I am not sure what it is. Water should not effect them either way to be honest. @@janinesobala7977 Did you ever come right with this? I have the same experience, the first two or three fruit flowers get pollinated, and thereafter all new females turn yellow and eventually dies. Never grows big enough for the flower to actually open to be pollinated. Everywhere I've searched people say it's because it didn't get pollinated, but that's not the issue. The issue is they aren't growing to the stage when the flowers would open.

Hi Gary. Thanks for the video. I am in Southern California. It's super dry and hot in my area. I did pretty well with my butternut squash but a couple of them have a split running the whole length of the squash. What made that happen? I don't feel that I watered too much. I started butterCUP in early spring and the heat/drought (zone 8A Georgia) has really taken a tole on them, even with consistent watering. Rain water makes them thrive, but city water only caused them to stay alive. Even with consistent watering, the full sun causes the leaves to wilt terribly looking half dead. Sure, they come back in the late evening/morning, but while wilted, I'm sure they are not doing much growing which is obvious due to the size of them remaining for so long. . Old myths about growing season vary depending on region. Winter was the season you couldn't grow the further north you are; further south, it's summer where nothing grows! I'm in Michigan but half my family is in Georgia; it's simply too hot to grow anything but the most hard, enduring plants during the summer. You probably can grow in the summer months, but you're closer to the sun, than I am, and the leaves just crisp. Use shade cloth tunnels to your advantage in those months, or plant somewhere that'll block midafternoon sun. Or, shift your planting schedule to a late winter-through-early summer that better suits your area. Just think of the high summer months as the gardening "winter" for Georgia.

I planted Rampicante and Green Striped Cushaw this year because our squash vine borer issues are so bad (coastal SC). Even those varieties, which are supposed to be resistant, were no match for the SVB. We got two really good sized Rampicante and maybe 2-3 decent sized Green Striped Cushaw. I think I might be done with squash... it's just not worth the work.

I am right behind you but giving it one last try with some butternut and acron squash plants because I do love eating them. Those vine borers are the worst - the fact that they kill the plant (instead of just damaging it) and you can't even really see them unless you are constantly inspecting your plant to look for the frass, then try to dig out a disgusting worm.... it's just a nightmare. I have been hand-picking the eggs but it seems like every few days they lay more. I have yet to ever spot one of the moths themselves although I avoid the heat of they day and I guess they do not. Sigh.

I used a trellis for my squash this year. I had one extra spot in the garden and decided to put down a butternut there and just let it go free. It's nearly in the center of my 15 x 27 foot garden and has touched every corner. Sure enough it didn't get any good squashes near the base and the ones I kept are basically as far from the base as possible. It's fun to watch as the squash grows the base root starts to die back, due to vine borer and mold and I'm sure other issues. However it just keeps thriving thanks to so many roots that set down throughout the vine. I'm thinking I'm going to go harvest one or two right now.

@Gary, I need HELP... I tried to call 911, but they told me there is not help for Mr. and Mrs Butternut. My Butternut plants just didn't grow very well, and made one butternut squash and the bugs made it all bumpy and no good. My yellow squash has not made one editable squash. I feel like I am gardening disabled...!!! Thank you for the videos love seeing all the wonderful food you grow. Just kinda makes me a little sad also tho, because my garden is such a failure for food production. I just dont know how much water to give the plants. Its not like they say... Few, I am so thirsty I could drink 5 gallons if water today. Lol. My squash last year didnt do very well here either...

You can buy a decent moisture probe (that also reads pH) on Amazon for $11. There is also a test for moisture by sticking your finger in the soil to see if it's dry. If you can't stick your finger in the soil, you need to amend it to loosen it up. Putting mulch around my plants has made a huge difference in moisture retention. I use the probe to determine when I need to water deeply for the deeper roots. Still, I water my squash, zuchinni, pumpkins, and tomatoes daily in extreme temps to take care of the shallow roots because the surface soil dries quickly... we don't get much rain. Just watch more of Gary's videos... he covers watering in a lot of them. You can do it!

Try different varieties and look into trap plants and flowers. Peppermint Castile soap spray works great too
