My plant grew 3 main stems, averaging 12’. Had tons of starters, but only yielding 3. I clipped the stems, hundreds of leaves off, yet it didn’t do much. It rained almost every day this summer, had heat and sun, and they still sucked. Had no luck in the boxes for 2 years, so at least I am headed in the right direction

So sorry to hear that ... Couple be the mix weather affect the growing production perhaps... But definitely pruning. Keep up with your fertilizer and I also recommend to increase the calcium it does help out a lot.. Good luck I hope The weather turns around better for you and have a good growing production 🌱🙏🏾

Excellent video, thank you! My butternuts have done the opposite of every video I’ve watched. Mine had only females blooms at first. 😳 The males weren’t blooming. I had lots of male blooms open on my pumpkins, so the bees decided they’d be the surrogate father of my first two butternuts. 😂😎🥳🤣 The male butternut blooms have since caught up, but in reality, the bees are the boss. They go back & forth between the pumpkin and butternut blooms. I have no need to hand pollinate, because the squash bees are incredibly proficient at their job!!! It’s amazing to watch! I won’t know who the father of my butternuts are unless I grow the seeds next season or Maury Povich tells us. 🤣😉😂

We grow Butternut Squash and Sugar Baby Pumpkins every year. The bonus in planting these 2 varieties is you can save, and roast the seeds for snacking on. Also, they're both heirloom plants, meaning you can dry and save the seeds for planting next year. If saving seeds to plant, always save from the biggest and ripest gourds. Doesn't hurt to test plant a few in doors next spring to test germination. If they do germinate and you time it right when it's time for planting, you're good to go to transplant. TYFS

Hi @greentgarden I have a serious issue with my squash. As of 1 month ago, I am growing a single butter baby squash variant in a 5 gallon bucket on my outside window terrace. My bucket has good drainage, sits in some wood planks to keep it from the hot metal grates, has new soil, and has been fertilized with organic vegetable fertilizer. The plant gets full sun from roughly 8AM-5PM (about 8-9hrs). I've been watering deeply every other day. I have two successful fruits growing at the bottom of the plant. I have pruned it so that all of the nutrition is going to one single vine. On that vine, for the last two weeks all of the new female flowers/buds have come on strong then yellowed and died. I am getting male flowers coming in every 2-3 days (lots of them). However, I lost about 10-12 female buds in a row and have not been able to produce a 3rd fruit. Please let me know your thoughts on why this may be happening and if I can do anything to help the plant.
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 5 ай бұрын
I am very sorry to hear that you sound like you got everything about right.. The only thing I would think about is the calcium. Believe it or not the plant is lack of calcium It could cause the fruit to turn yellow before opening.... The other thing is just watering .. And if the temperature is way too hot sometimes it could stress the plant out And this is the other reason why You're having this problem.. . I would say increase your calcium a bit and try to control the water and hopefully the weather gets better. Give it some time it should get better 🙏🏾🌱

Great explanation! Thank you. Do you have experience with blue Hubbard squash? I'm in my first year growing them, and have several at five plus pounds in early July. I've seen where these can grow to twenty or more pounds. When does one know it's harvest time?
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 5 ай бұрын
Pick them when the outside looks like pale blue-gray , skin should be hard and firm. Your fingernail should not be able to go in that easy , I believe another way if the stem of the fruit should be dried up.. When you harvest these squash I believe you have to cure them. Leave them in the Sun for about 7 days..

@@Greentgarden Thanks for the tips. Watering has been done by my brother and I don't like how he does it. It could be part of the problem since he doesn't keep a schedule. The plant is so small there's not much to prune. My guess is watering and intense early heat. I recommend the Butterscotch squash, it's a mini variety. I had one plant last year with 8 fruit and they were the best I've ever tasted!

Oh nice..thank you I recommended that I did taste one before. They're very delicious.. Mid-October should be respectable in most zones to harvest butternuts, I think? Stems on mine don’t seem to want to dry up, shrivel and turn brown. The rind is tan and nail-resistant too… I cautiously cut one and the one-inch stem leaked a few drops of water… 🤔
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 2 ай бұрын
So basically the plant is slowly fully ripen up the butternut squash that's already thrown 10. What you could do is cut an inch above the tan butternut squash and leave it by your window or outside for about 2 weeks out. It will rip and cure perfectly... With the weather changing or even insects attacking the plant, it will stress out the plant and basically slow down the production

How to know when to harvest pumpkins. Thanks in advance
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 2 ай бұрын
So when it comes to pumpkin it all depends on the variety. Some of them change colors. Some of them are big but the one thing you have to look for is When the rind is hard and doesn't dent when you press your fingernail into it .. Also when the stream next to the pumpkin head turns dry up ...

Your very welcome and yes pruning does help a lot , It helps with a better airflow and production .... I always remove 3-4 leaves at the beginning of the plant ( root area) and sometimes I remove 1-2 side shoots , which is known as the runners... Make sure to add fertilizer every two weeks because this is a heavy feeding plant.. You will get a better production

You helped this first time gardener a lot. I was able to get fruit but the butternut squash seems to stop growing at 4-5” in length. It’s still in the 90s and the plant endured a hot summer since July. The vines are picked clean of leaves half way up and vines are grey/dry in areas. I have been self pollinating. Are they slow growers? They are already tan in color and not sure if too soon to pick that small
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 2 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that but with a 90° that's too hot for butternut squash. So the stress on the plant level it's a bit higher and could cause your fruit to stun the growth .. Unfortunately, it might not keep growing. Once it start getting the tan color it means it's begin. It's ripening process. Normally this happen when you reach it full size but due to the weather this could cost a problem.. Soon as the weather drops a bit in the '70s to '80s you're going to get a better growing production. Overall. Just keep up with your fertilizer in the water in... Have a wonderful week ahead... happy gardening 🌱

I’ve been growing butternut for the first time, and I’ve noticed all the leaves on the vine are dying . There are a few butternuts still growing but are not ready to be picked yet..Must I just leave them as they are?
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear , are the leaves dying because the weather is too cold ? Sometimes check for squash bugs. They love butternut squash leaves... So if all the leaves are dying and the plant looks like it's going to die, you might just have to harvest the butternut squash and leave it by your window or countertop... If they're small, you could still eat them, but they would not have the same taste as when they're fully ripen..

From Eden Brothers I bought a packet of seeds of Waltham Butternut Squash. I do only container planting, and a Walmart bought an oval metal container with handles(waaay cheaper in price than at garden centers, and with a nail and hammer made holes in the bottom). I planted my butternut squash in that and added supports for the vines. They have done very well by follow tips from Green T Garden. They are now in the stage of starting to lighten but not yet beige. 5 so far but more starters coming. I am in Zone 10 in Southern California.

I live in RI. I have not tried butternut squash but I will next year. I won’t have enough of a growing season this year. I grew pumpkins but only got ONE. It looks like it could be ready to pick but what should I look for?

Oh sorry to hear , Try prune your pumpkin plant and increase the fertilizer.. Also depends on the type of pumpkin you're growing .. once you see your pumpkin stop growing, reach its size, it's hard and most pumpkins will turn a full orange ... .. 🙏🏾🌱

picked 6 today, 5 were white and 1 was dark green. Plants had already died, two of them were just lying around without any connection.

But how do you know whats a male vs female flower?
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden Жыл бұрын
So the male flower has a skinny stem with a flower at the end , the female is much thicker and shaped as a small green fruit with spots of white on it.. I will try to do a short video on this soon 🙏🏾🌱

Thank you! Who knew? I grow these every year and bumper crops abound. I wonder how much more could come from selecting them as you shared.

Your welcome and it's good to know .. especially if you have no bees and your fruit to turn yellow and fall off, it's a good sign you need to hand pollinate.. I did a short video on this this morning 🌱🙏🏾

So it does require some light either from a light bulb or from the window corner and good air flow around it..

When the stem is green the plant is still sending nutrients to the squash. When brown its done and ripe. Is this amature hour???
