Harvest your butternut squash when the skin is hard (can't be punctured with the thumbnail) and uniformly tan in color leave a 1-inch stem on each fruit. In general, butternut squash takes about 100 to 120 days from planting time to mature
How to Cure butternut squash ,
Cure your butternut squash After cutting the fruits from the vine, sun-cure in the field for 5-7 days, or, cure indoors for 5-7 days , in an area with good air ventilation .
Why curing butternut squash ,
Curing helps to harden the skin of winter squash and can even aid in healing minor wounds. Proper curing will improve the shelf life of winter squash too

We grow Butternut Squash and Sugar Baby Pumpkins every year. The bonus in planting these 2 varieties is you can save, and roast the seeds for snacking on. Also, they're both heirloom plants, meaning you can dry and save the seeds for planting next year. If saving seeds to plant, always save from the biggest and ripest gourds. Doesn't hurt to test plant a few in doors next spring to test germination. If they do germinate and you time it right when it's time for planting, you're good to go to transplant. TYFS

@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 9 ай бұрын
Your very welcome and yes pruning does help a lot , It helps with a better airflow and production .... I always remove 3-4 leaves at the beginning of the plant ( root area) and sometimes I remove 1-2 side shoots , which is known as the runners... Make sure to add fertilizer every two weeks because this is a heavy feeding plant.. You will get a better production

If it's too cold it's not going to grow and if it gets in the 30s will damaged the squash.. If you harvest and it's small, it would not continue to grow. If it reached the full size you could place it by the window. It will ripen.. Do not throw away the green small squash. You could still eat them. They're very soft

I’ve been growing butternut for the first time, and I’ve noticed all the leaves on the vine are dying . There are a few butternuts still growing but are not ready to be picked yet..Must I just leave them as they are?
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 8 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear , are the leaves dying because the weather is too cold ? Sometimes check for squash bugs. They love butternut squash leaves... So if all the leaves are dying and the plant looks like it's going to die, you might just have to harvest the butternut squash and leave it by your window or countertop... If they're small, you could still eat them, but they would not have the same taste as when they're fully ripen..
@richardwright6222
@richardwright6222 8 ай бұрын
Thank you.. yes the weather has turned cold now. There are no bugs on the squashes ( not that I can see anyway) The Butternuts are quite big in size ( 1 which is golden and about 4 which are still green) Should I pick them all and leave them by my window? Really don’t want them to spoil.
