Күн бұрын

This week I show you how we grow our roses for cut floral production on our farm to insure we have loads of blooms come this spring. Roses can be tricky but with a few tips and tricks we have mastered it other then our Koko Loko Rose. What would gardening be without a few set backs and re-works. I am chatting about my new walled rose garden that was inspired by ‪@CogHillFarm‬ ‪@justdigitfarms‬ New David Austin's will be arriving soon to start on this project. !

I have a three-year-old Tangerine Skies Arborose. It is magnificent. But I am not a flower farmer, and somehow it has managed to thrive in spite of my lack of knowledge. Now you have shown me what to do in a way that is simple, not intimidating, and absolutely doable for me. Thank you!!!

Wonderful! I'm not really an expert, but I have learned through the years, and in my book, that's the best kind of learning. I'm so happy you are tagging along with us. Happy gardening ❤️

WOW! 1000 roses! I would suggest the use of a cement mixer - measure out the compost for how many plants, add appropriate amount of fertilizer and then mix - dump into a wheel barrow and off you go, putting the amount on each rose. Just an idea. I tell ya, its a good thing I can't grow roses other than shrub and bush without LOTS of added protection - I would treat them those lovely roses the same as shrubs and lop them off 6 " from the ground..lol. Too bad about the hail storm. Thanks for the great information.

I do mix a ton in our trailer and we dump that way, it works well it just still is a ton of work. I love shrub roses, so easy and beautiful to grow.

My Koko loco didn’t make it through our winter. I knew it was a risk because it’s a zone 6 and we are in zone 5b. I did just pre order Honey Dijon and distant drums, so I am super excited for that. I also have 11 DA roses that should put on a beautiful display this year! Thank you for your videos I appreciate your time and you add such value to the community!

My Koko Loko didn't come back this year either 😞 not sure why... I think we got too cold. I'm zone 6b but we usually don't get that cold. If/when we do get cold, it doesnt get much below 20 & if so, it's just for a couple of hours during the night.

I really enjoyed your video. What do you use to combat the Japanese Beetle? They are so destructive. I used the beetle bag but yes they did go into it however, lots of them annihilated my rose. I have planted an additional 12 roses this year and it was a big investment for these David Austin roses and I will be dammed if these little pains destroy them.

I do spray one to two times of year but most of our roses do fine without spray. I find the white are the worse ones. Pray really early in the morning before the bees are out or late in the evening if you choose to do so, you can also use an organic spray but sometimes that can be worse because you have to do more offend. I'm not an expert on it, you just have to do what's best for you.

We use all the different types of roses in designs, but it depends on what it is for. If it's gorgeous a wedding, we can use more short-lived roses or more delicate looking ones, but if it's gorgeous a mixed bouquet, then we would use something hardier. On Dave Austin roses, they have a list of ones best used for cutting. Pope John Paul is one of our longest lasting blooms we have on the farm as far as vase life.

@crowleyhouseflowerfarm Thank you. I am researching the different types- mostly for mixed bouquets at this point. I see Queen Elizabeth, Bolero and Bonica on a wholesale order list. I'll definitely look for some of the others you mentioned.

We have a hedgerow around the farm that I think keeps them out. I do see deer in one of our field in fall and winter but not in summer 👍

Do you trim back one year old rose bushes or do you wait a couple of years before you trim them back?
@crowleyhouseflowerfarm
@crowleyhouseflowerfarm Жыл бұрын
You want to just tidy them up, take out all the old, disease, and crossing branches, and just shape the rose. Just don't get too vigorous.
