In the late 90s Cyclamen started to become very popular with winter funerals and wakes in Eastern Europe countries beyond former Iron Curtain. That's because potted Cyclamens became more available in flower shops and thus an alternative to the more popular cut Carnations. Wake goers would place them by the coffin and then they would be further passed along to those who attended the funeral, once it ended, in remembrance of the deceased person. This practice survives, with Cineraria being another highly popular funerary plant in winter and cut carnations or Gerberas throughout the year. I think that many in Eastern Europe still tend to associate these plants with such occasions.

Goodness, there's a piece of history that's new to me. Not a great association for the poor cyclamen. Thanks for sharing

Very helpful, Thank you! I've seen these in our garden centers, beautiful plants sold as annuals here, now I know why! It's due to the huge swings in temperatures in the winter. Very Interesting!

Ah yes. It's not a plant that has longevity everywhere. There are hardier outdoor varieties too but they are less floriferous.

Would you believe. I’ve done everything you’ve said NOT to do!!! Small wonder they die every year. I’ve got a dining room with a conservatory on the back of the house which makes the dining room quite dark, would you try growing them in there as we only use it for dining at special events so the heating isn’t on all the time but it’s not freezing either? I love this plant in the garden and manage to keep them alive their so I’d love to have them indoors too. Thanks Deb

Cyclamen need cool but also light so your conservatory might be just the place! We are always learning with our plants, aren't we!

Ell, I just brought one in early March from the grocer, I guess it will just die off because I can't keep a temperature like you suggest anywhere as a constant. Oh well, they sure are pretty.

Well, sometimes you just need to treat plants as disposable, I guess.

So how long does it stay dormant and when do you water it again?
@GardeningatDouentza

It should start into growth at the end of the summer then you can gradually start watering.

@@GardeningatDouentza I always bought greenhouse or grocery store ones as house plants. When they died back I thought I killed them. I did not know that they come back to life from dormancy.

So I bought a cyclamen last month (August) in full flower (I guess it was forced by the nursery). I have watered it and it is losing its leaves; is there a way I can tell whether it's dying or just going into dormancy? I have put it in a darkish coolish room - the best I can do for the moment as it's unseasonably hot here in the UK! I will also stop watering. Is there anything else you can recommend I do? Would a repot be too stressful?

Hi there. Sorry to hear about your cyclamen. I don't think you can really tell if it's dying or just going dormant but once the leaves are gone, so long as the corm is firm, it is still alive. I would imagine that your temperatures are too warm for it. Maybe you could leave it in a sheltered porch (by the way, lucky you with the unseasonably warm temperatures) as this would be cooler than the house? Do stop watering unless it dries out completely but still has leaves. Don't repot. Repotting is best done when dormant. Hope this helps and good luck.

My grandmother could keep them for years. The bulbs were very big. I ve kept small cyclamen in the hall. After flowering I ve planted them outside under a shrub. They came back and flowered in fall. Central heating in appartments makes it not easy. I love cyclamen and will plant garden veriaties in pots on my shady balcony. Once in flower I might take them for about 2 weeks inside to enjoy and place them back outside. Maybe a solution.

I also know some people in slightly milder areas of Ireland who grow these Cyclamen persicum hybrids in the garden. It's just great if you do have that kind of climate. And, yeah, centrally heated apartments and houses have seen off a lot of plants that were easily grown indoors back in the day, like cyclamen and cymbidiums. I guess we're all warmer now. Thanks for watching and have a great evening.

@@GardeningatDouentza Thank you for your reply. I appreciate. Did you know that Bulbi has also black friday and end of stock reduction. I think this could be interesting for you. Question: I like mignon dahlia. Its very difficult to find them. I will sow them in march. I like the fact that they are compact and they have simple flowers for the bees. I think my living room ( 16 Celsius abf 60 percent humidity in the air) not direct sunlight could be a place to sow them. And important to harden them off in may. I hope I will succeed.

@@marcusseidel6824 Thanks, I'll look out for the Bulbi Black Friday sale next year. I would imagine your sitting room temperatures adequate for the dahlia tubers. Let me know how you get on.

If the bulb/corm is still solid then it's still alive, just gone prematurely dormant. Hope that's the case for yours.

I live in zone 8b -9. I’m thinking it’s not cold enough here! Our temperatures are not like what is required, so why do stores sell them here! I bought one before Christmas and the flowers have been gone. 😢

Too bad then, central heating without costum setting for each room, so the whole house is too hot and dry for them. Beautiful flower than still make a nice gift.
