My dad had a little patch of ground next to his garage. For years he had been using it as a compost pile until one day, he bought a bag of green onion starter plants and he decided to plant them in that spot. WOW! They were the BEST and most SPICY green onions I had ever had. They were not the small delicate green onions you buy at the store, these were MEGA green onions and HOT. But I loved them. Wish my dad was still alive to share some of them with me. I used to come home with a couple of dozen of these onions. I'm going to start a few in my garden and see if I can get them to do what they did in my dad's garden.

Gret video. I'm trying this now. I can't believe this never occurred to me, and I grow a ton of food. My problem is, I start scallions (bunching onions, actually) at 30-day intervals, and one batch failed so I was facing a month of buying them from stores. Now, it looks like I can just buy a bunch and plant the bulbs... and fill that gap nicely. So instead of buying 4 bunches, I'll get by with just one. Also, some cheaper store-bought green onions are actually full-sized onion thinnings instead of scallions of bunching onions. Mine are from Aldi, the epitome of cheap produce. It would be great if I ended up with a few dozen sets for next year from the experiment too. This is why I love growing things and experimenting: there's always something unexpected to discover. Even if it's not by-Hoyle "new," discoveries like this are always great to stumble upon.

This is a great video - I am growing green onions for the first time (and from seeds). The only problem with this method (buying them from the grocery store) is that the white part (with the roots) is the best part to eat. I have also read that if you grow green onions, you can add soil as they grow. It would be a lot of work, but apparently, as they grow, you can add soil - effectively bury them a little deeper as they grow, and by doing this you can make the white part of the onion increase in length. Eventually, you'll end up with green onions with ends that are several inches in length (the white part).
@The.Ghost.of.Tom.Joad.2 жыл бұрын
That's the method for growing leeks. Never heard of people using green onions this way, As someone who worked his way through college as a chef, most chefs use only the green part of scallions. The flavor is milder, making scallions a perfect fit for salads or topping stirfry. The whites always went into stock. Since I still make my own stock, that's why I do with green oinion whites. Well, until today, when I'm planting them as an experiment. PS. Not saying your way's wrong or that the chefs I worked for were right, but there's a method to their madness when you scratch beneath the surface.

I always grow this green onion from grocery store. I don't really understand why so many people say that you can get only 1 to 3 crops. I have them growing non stop year after year. The only thing is at some point it starts going into seeding, then the growth slows down. But I cut the head off and it keeps growing green onion for me.

I've been growing grocery store green onions as a semi perennial in my Food Forest for four years now. Zone 7 and I can plant them anytime of year. You can cut and come again for years. They do get quite big but are still delicious green onions. The only time I have bought more was plant another patch Lol 😆

pandanese90 ..........Dear Friends of God......................Please research God's Time/Calendar in Genesis 1:14 before a False Sabbath law is enforced! Actions are in progress to honor a Sabbath day, “Green Sabbath”, “Laudato Si, par. 237”, etc. Already today, there are Sunday laws written on government books. The true Sabbath Is not Friday, Saturday, Sunday, etc. The true Sabbath is calculated by true time, Genesis 1:14. The first week.....the new moon day, the six work days and the Sabbath day. The second, third and fourth week........six work days and then Sabbath day. Genesis 1:14 is a commandment from God. God commanded us to let the lights in heaven be for days, years, etc. We are to use the sun, moon and stars to calculate our days, years, signs, seasons, Sabbaths, etc., not the Gregorian calendar or any other man-made time. The Sabbath commandment is one of the Ten commandments listed in Exodus 20 and It is just as important as the other nine commandments. It is to be kept! God has three category of days in the Bible, the new moon day, the six work days and the Sabbath day. God’s months start with the new moon day, which is the first day of the month. The Gregorian calendar do not start its months with the new moon day. The new moon day falls anywhere and everywhere on the Gregorian calendar. Sometimes, on the famous Gregorian calendar, the new moon day falls on the “Gregorian Seventh day Saturday Sabbath.” How can it both be the first day of the month and the seventh day Sabbath? This along should help a person to see that the Gregorian calendar is not true time and that the Biblical Sabbath should not be calculated by it. The Sabbath is a sign between God and His people Israel and whosoever join themselves to them. One law is to Israel and to the stranger. Exodus 12:48,49 Also, research the "Seven Noahide Laws" and Education Day U.S.A. Do the “Seven Noahide Laws” From my research online, these laws are Jewish laws taken from their writings, namely the Talmud. The first law in “The seven Noahide laws" forbids the worship of idols. According to Jewish writings, the worship of Jesus, Yahushua, etc........is idolatry and is punishable by death, decapitation. Will these laws be enforced on all nations??? Research the connection between the United Nations, The Presidents, President Bush, President Trump, etc. and “The Seven Noahide laws" THESE "SEVEN NOAHIDE LAWS". SEEMS TO BE VERY DANGEROUS TO CHRISTIANS AND TO ALL MANKIND!! Lastly, there is much talk online that the Jewish people occupying the land of Israel today are not the true Israelites and that the true Israelites are today now scattered throughout the nations, is this true? There are also other groups of people who say that they are the true Jews. Jesus said in Revelation 2:9 & 3:9 that someone is saying that they are Jews but are not but are the synagogue of Satan. If Jesus warns us about a synagogue of Satan in Revelation 2:9 & 3:9, should not we be concern? If the people residing in the land of Israel not true Israel, then who are they and what is their agenda for the world? Who are the true Bloodline Jews? HAVE A GOOD DAY FRIENDS OF GOD..........GLORY TO THE FATHER AND SON!

@@newtiger007 Me too, except the only herb i have so far is basil. I think I'd like to grow some cilantro and rosemary. Rosemary is really easy to grow where I live. I'm surprised how well my peppers are doing. I've never grown peppers before. My grandfather was a sharecropper and by the time I came along was retired but he had a big yard and always had a garden with tomatoes and onions and corn - maybe I'll find I have farming in my blood! I usually just put them in a jar with some water on my windows sill. Makes them regrow and give me green onions for weeks (months even if you use them sparingly) AND give me something nice to look at when I'm cooking :-). I noticed how much the roots (re)grow in water, so I think I'll keep on doing that for a while before planting them out in the garden.

Depends on what you want. If you're just looking for the green tops to cut in to your salad, use scissors and cut as much as you want , leaving the root and 6 inches above ground so the onion keeps growing. But if you want to eat the onion part, you have to pull it all out and THEN you can cut up the green part too for your salad. Since I LOVE the onion part, I take the whole plant. Usually little ONION SHOOTS come out of the parent onion and THEY will come up next year. Beware, the next year you will have a bumper crop, more than you can eat because each onion you planted will give off baby shoots that will mature next year. You'll have so many you will be able to set up a fruit stand next to your driveway. I had a neighbor that used to do that with the 5 fruit trees he had in his yard. He had little baskets next to his driveway with his fruit and you could buy them when he had them. It was under the honor system. You left your money in the can next to the fruits. Everyone in the neighborhood loved it. My sister came to visit from Chicago and she thought it was such an interesting neighbor.
