Anthurium besseae aff. growing strong in ambient conditions in a glass vase per the Plant Gay Method! Never thought I could grow a plant like this in my home. I live in the opposite of its preferred conditions in the wild, so no help from my ambient air or my drafty windows. Seeing jungle plants growing happily when there is an arctic blizzard outside makes me giggle.
@plantgayforlife11 ай бұрын
Yes! It’s kinda crazy how we can keep them happy when there’s freezing temps or even snow right outside! Glad to hear it’s working for you over there!😃

Man besseae aff is such a gorgeous anthurium! I might even prefer it to papillilaminum.

I'm glad you clarified your care vs conditions. Never a dull moment if you just follow a care routine without considering how ever changing conditions effect care needs.
@plantgayforlife11 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes most people focus on care and don’t think about how your conditions can affect plants differently, even under the same care routine as someone else.

Hi there Jake, GREAT job! Here’s what I have found works best for me. Being half blind, it is very hard to eyeball moisture EXCEPT with Leica in glass jars. However, as you pointed out…that means a good bit of aeration down at the roots. SO, I found a single layer of Leica on the bottom, followed by Sphagnum and pumice (and charcoaland bark sometimes )followed by straight Sphagnum - oh yes! And plant too!) works really well. Thank you for all the information! , And for sharing your inspiring spirit.
@plantgayforlife11 ай бұрын
Perfect! More aerated towards the bottom and more moisture-retentive towards the top helps keep the roots evenly hydrated! 😃At the end of the day, once we find what works for us, we just gotta stick to it

I use the no drainage to root cuttings and they are doing so insultingly well I let them stay in there and I now use it to "save" sick plants. It works well once you get a feel how much water/moisture a plant needs to be happy. Love how much fun you have with your plants! ❤❤

Another fun filled video from our Plant Gay! Also, would u reccommend higher light for darker foliage?
@plantgayforlife11 ай бұрын
Thanks!🥰😚 I hear some people say shade your dark velvet leaves to make them darker. And I hear some people say blast them with bright light for darker foliage. I feel like they both can darken foliage. It might have to do with certain wavelengths a grow light gives off vs sunlight, which is over my head knowledge-wise at the moment. I also think generous fertilizing can help leaves grow more vibrant and darker as well! I’ve personally had dark leaves emerge in DEEP shade in my terrarium cabinet, as well as directly under a bright grow light. At the end of the day, it seems that aroids are experts at quickly adapting to a specific lighting situation and making the most of it😊

How deep is the fluval under the moss? How much water should there be in the glass container? I know that watering frequency varies on multiplefactors, but how often are you checking/ watering? You are an absolute delight!
@plantgayforlife9 ай бұрын
The free draining base can be about an inch in depth, a little water can sit on the bottom when you re-water it, so long as it’s not flooding the moss, I check maybe twice a week on average, and maybe water each plant once a week on average:)

I'm starting slow with an anthurium fingers in pon with leca for the reservoir. I have a collar of sphagnum moss covered in an icee lid (whatever works!) and it's doing great. Leaf after leaf coming in, none departing! I'm nervous to try fluval stratum and I also think it may not be appropriate. I have humidifiers running so the humidity never dips below 65% and averages 70% in the areas where I grow my aroids. I've got cacti outside and a jungle inside. I digress - yeah, people still say that, right? (Neurodivergent moment) My conditions are different from yours so I need to go with what works here. I'm pretty new to anthurium, but I'm going to research their particular habitats and go from there. You taught me so much! I love the incredible variety of content you post. But dude, that pallidiflorum deserves better! What possessed you to pot her in terracotta? I'm sure you had a perfectly reasonable reason, and I'd love to know the story there! 💚

Pretty interesting! I started growing Anthuriums in no drainage a while ago and they are doing much better than before, however I sometimes get rot when growing in aroid mix. I may try sphagnum moss. Right now I'm experimenting with coco chunks and self-made pon.
@plantgayforlife11 ай бұрын
I get rot sometimes as well. It can happen if it’s too wet or too dry in the substrate without proper aeration. I’m always experimenting with different mixtures and ratios of substrates 🤓

Thank you for sharing. Very informative 😊. Quick question, if you accidentally overwater the glass vases, how do you get rid of the excess water?
@plantgayforlife11 ай бұрын
You just have to carefully tilt the vase and pour some water out. With smaller vases it’s easy to use your hands or paper towels to keep the substrate from falling out. Large vases can be heavy and trickier so I always try to water a bit, then wait a minute or 2 to see how much water accumulates in the base😁

New subscriber here! I came across your video just doing a little research. I like to think of myself as a fellow plant enthusiast/scientist 🤓 You my friend are delightful!!! I'm also a plant minimalist and don't like to do a lot of complicated things with my plants I LOVE clear and glass containers. I like to see the roots growing. I am going to try sphagnum moss w/glass containers immediately. It's so pleasing to the eye (IMO). Thank you for the insight. Now...on to binge-watching all of your videos. CIAO!

Hiiii I'm new here and just want to say I love your videos!!! I will be attempting to create these vases for my two anthuriums but I was wondering how do you go about fertilizing these babies? Which fertilizer would be okay to sit almost stagnantly?
@plantgayforlife8 ай бұрын
Thanks! Any fertilizer suited for houseplants will do! If you overdo the recommended dosage you might get some mineral build up on top of the medium and sometimes it gets into the foliage and burns the edges over time. To avoid this, use the recommended dosage or less and you’ll be just fine😁
