This is my new favourite plant channel. Love the chaotic (but highly informative) energy. I’m in Ireland and buy anthuriums from the EU. Annoyingly I can’t buy from the UK because of stupid Brexit but there are lots of good plant shops in Europe. Probably more expensive over here than in the US and though we have a European hub of Ecuagenera the range is much narrower. Not on plant social media groups here as the market is too unpredictable and small. Keep the great videos coming Jake - you’re so funny and entertaining to watch!

That is an interesting idea…letting the plant have a few early adolescence inflorescenses. Makes perfect sense actually..I am terrible at finding good plant people to buy from online. With that in mind I buy my plants almost exclusively from BarTrop plants in Ohio. Nice little micro-greenhouse with house grown anthuriums, orchids and philos. What more do I need?

I get my anthuriums from locals through FB (lucky to have a lot of anthurium lovers near me), and sometimes we do group orders of things like seeds and seedlings to save some money. I'm in a few anthurium FB groups, but I never buy. I've ordered from Etsy a few times and that's gone well too. I'm always intrigued to buy from KartelDaun or Tropicals but haven't yet.

I’m a bit confused.. the plant is setting low on the pumice, more around it than under it seems like the roots would set more in the water… what is the theory of not setting it on top of all the pumice opposed to setting it in my middle and building a pumice wall so you speak. Just trying to learn.. thanks ❤
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife Ай бұрын
Those roots that have grown in the fluval stratum are semi hydroponic roots capable of sitting in standing water. They will root into the pumice around and underneath as they search for new water.

I don't think they fully understand how plants interpret pain, but they can see us! So, if that's not horrifying . I swear, look it up.
@plantgayforlife

As far as we know, plants exist and function on a completely different realm than animals/humans. They can sense and react to danger the way our bodies sense and react to danger (pain). But they don’t have pain receptors or feel emotions the way we do. It’s very easy for us to anthropomorphize non-human life forms.

How do you transition soil plants to this system? Have I missed that video?
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife 27 күн бұрын
You can use any medium in vases if the plant is drying out too frequently with drainage holes. Soil is more compact than aroid mixes or moss and has much more organic material in it that can lead to fungal issues if the soil is too wet, and too compact to breathe. I only recommend vases for plants that usually require higher humidity because the vase creates a humid microclimate around the root system, essentially mimicking its native environment. This allows you to grow more moisture-sensitive tropical plants in dry homes.
@bailemos
@bailemos 27 күн бұрын
@@plantgayforlife thank you for replying. If I wanted to transition say an Alocasia, do I just remove the soil and put it straight into leca / moss without growing any water roots first?
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife 26 күн бұрын
Clean off the roots completely and plant in moss with some free draining medium at the bottom. I’ve done that before and alocasias loved it:)
@bailemos
@bailemos 26 күн бұрын
@@plantgayforlife thank you again. 💐 I've read some recommend putting perlite on top instead of moss (will use leca on bottom). Did you ever try that? I've a great looking Dragon Scale right now with some 7 leaves and I'm hoping not to lose all the leaves in the transition lol. That's my biggest worry.

Dollar Tree usually has smaller ones (3”-4” wide X 6”-8” tall) for $1.25. This weekend Joanne’s craft stores have several larger sizes at 60% off. Last night I found 6” X 8” glass cylinder vases with tulips and daffodil plants at Trader Joe’s for $6 each.

let me get it straight, you water vases with regular all porpuse fertilizer?! and what about wash the salts, ph, how does it work at all beside shoving things to a glass? i think begginers who consider doing what you show risking their plants very seriously

@@plantgayforlife I surely did, I looked for more detailed guide for what you claim is possible, and I encountered only with warnings, needed messy monthly flashing ritual, ph metering and special fertilizers for hydroponics. Surprisingly, you are the only one on the internet who doesn't talk on any of those. Like you hold a magic trick in you sleeve
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife 4 ай бұрын
@@s0me0nelse lol I don't do magic. I check the PH once after mixing my fertilizer to make sure it's slightly acidic and then I never have to do it again because there is no need. The PH is never going to change unless the water quality or fertilizer changes. I never flush my plants and they're thriving so if it's not necessary for me then I'm not going to recommend it. And when it comes to aroids most plant foods will suffice. You don't need any special three-part solution. I used to use those fancy semi hydro fertilizers. When I switched to other fertilizers I saw no difference whatsoever. You just need the appropriate NPK ratios depending on what you're growing. It's not rocket science.

@@plantgayforlife i dont understand why all other growers bother themselves with so many equipment and additional care rutines if that is such a no brainer. does this method has a name so i can search online for more detailed tutorial? i really like my plants and i fear risking them and my money on growing substances before ill see more detailed professional tutorial about that
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife 4 ай бұрын
@@s0me0nelse I won't recommend a "professional" because I didn't learn these methods from anyone else. I just experimented myself. And I came to realize that not 'flushing' my plants has had no consequences. I live in NYC where the water quality is very good. If your local tap water has more minerals in it than mine, flushing might be necessary. You have to observe how your plants react to your environment, the water you give them, and the set ups you provide for their growth. But I'm not going to do something just because everyone says I should do it. I'm going to test it myself and see what works and doesn't work. I encourage you to do the same.
