Again, great video. Your videos becoming better and better. Thank you. And yes you can eat the cherries. In Germany we mostly have three kinds of cherries. The ones you have shown are the sweet and biggest ones. Then there are sour cherries a little bit smaller and also wild cherries, which are the smallest and in taste a mixture between the first ones. But they are all tasty. Guten Appetit.

I can’t remember but someone told me they make you sick, at least these ones, but the road off the side of my place has 10-20 trees, all covered and ready to pick! 😍😍
@henningbartels62454 жыл бұрын
@@PuntingForThePeople , all cherries you will find in Germany are edible. I can't think of an exception. Of course, if you eat to many, you can get a bit sick. ;-) I would be careful with eating a lots of cherries and drink beer or soda at the same time - that sometimes causes diarrhea or bellyache. If the trees are in an public area along a street or path in the field it's totally fine to pick them as long as one does not damage the trees (like break off branches ...) Apple, plum and cherry trees used tio be very common along the fields ... still maybe 50 years ago, but are declining nowadays. People are not interested anymore and will rather buy picked and packed stuff at the super market. So these fruit trees are often lacking care and maintenance, plus their branches are often to low for todays traffic / trucks. Often the cherries here (especially those without maintenance do have small maggots. They are no health risk - it just doesn't look nice if you find one. If you care about these there is a trick: put your picked for 15 minutes in lukewarm water. That will cause the maggots to leave the cherries and you will find them in the water.

Hi Jacob, been Subscribed for a few weeks now, really enjoying your content, more real than many others out there and very well produced, keep it up! As South Africans looking to move to Germany, myself and my girlfriend have been following various vloggers and sometimes struggle to find "real" people. We were wondering if you could possibly cover some "day-to-day" differences in the way things are built/structured. For example, in the larger South African cities there's very much a large enclosed mall every couple of kilometers with smaller, convenience centers closer to the suburbs, for normal grocery shopping one would head to your (as humans we're creatures of habit) "favorite" convenience center as it has your bear essentials in one space, and then if you need something they don't have, most likely go to your favorite mall. I know how life is inside a large city in Germany such as Cologne where you have a shopping district and then smaller stores scattered around the various suburbs but from your perspective as someone who appears to live in a smaller town/area how are the shopping centers/convenience centers structured (if any) vs what you're used to back in Aus or from what I've described in my comment?

The cherrys, aples, etc. on public roads are eatable, owner is the community, city or county. The most fruits are usualy free to every one, but in the last time some public owner have leased (partnership) the trees to private people. Not for money, but the people than have the obligation to take care for the trees, water them, etc. and can in return get the fruits.
@RustyDust1014 жыл бұрын
First off, thank you Jacob for making these beautiful vids for us to enjoy. If you get something from that as well, amazing, a true win-win situation. Keep them coming. The cherries at 6:01 seem to be the quite tangy kind. They also need quite a bit more sun to reach a deeper red. Some of them look ripe for the picking. If you want some really sweet cherries you will have to look for the type "Schattenmorellen". They have such a deep red color that their skin is almost black. Inside the pulp is also deep red, but light than the skin. Any cherry (or other fruit) trees that stand in public lots are free to be used (in reasonable amounts). You shouldn't go around picking every last cherry from them. Grabbing a handful or two won't be a problem tho. "Alles in Maßen", everything in its measure. Anything that looks even moderately private, like a meadow off the street should also be considered private. Yet even then, if you pick only an apple or two from low-hanging branches close to the border with the street, most owners won't be angry with you. But then, heck, that's what makes them even tastier, right? Forbidden fruit and so on? ;-)

I have seen some darker almost purple ones down the road, so maybe another kind, I’ll try a couple of the darker red ones from outside today. Hopefully they mix with my tastebuds well, as there are SOOO MANY trees in the public spaces, and that many cherries going to waste is just horrible 😅👀

So...when did you shot this vid? If you shot it roughly two weeks ago, this should be sweet cherries, if you shot it fairly recently, those should be sour cherries (the sweet ones ripe earlier than the sour ones). They are ripe once they have a dark red colouring. In general, you are allowed to harvest fruits which grow on public spaces (often you are even officially invited to do so), but only for your personal use and naturally you should take care to not damage anything while doing so. Small warning: Be careful with everything which grows close to the ground (less likely with cherries, but can be the case with berries), they can be contaminated with the Fuchsbandwurm. Ideally you leave those for the animals and stick to what grows higher up. Otherwise, Germany's flora is pretty friendly. With fruits and nuts, it is pretty easy to recognize what is eatable and what isn't. Just be careful with the Vogelbeere. It's not really poisonous, but can cause all kind of stomach problems if you eat them rare. Perhaps you should google where the public harvesting spots in your city are.

5:57 These are Felsenbirnen (serviceberry?) and you can eat them. Nobody will harvest them, they are for the birds. Other fruit trees belong to someone when they are in a garden or an orchard (Streuobstwiese). However, a lot of these trees are not harvested any more, because it is a lot of work and fruits are cheap. If the trees are on public space, they were planted by the city and you can eat the fruits. There is a rumor that you can't be fined for stealing fruits when you eat them immediatelly (Mundraub). That is not true, however nobody will sue you for some apples. In former times, the trees were planted around a village in meadows to feed the cows and give apples and pears for cider, cherries and plums for Schnaps. Nowadays many people got orchards from their parents and they have to take care of them. Making cider or Schnaps is work, so many trees are simply no longer harvested.
@christineseibold24624 жыл бұрын
You can eat all the cherries you have shown in your video, none of them are poisonous. But, if they are not on public ground, then they belong to somebody. So you have to ask the owner first. With the apples it´s the same, as soon as they are ripe. The berry bush at 5,58 is food also " Felsenbirne" it is called and you eat the blue or very dark purple berries on it. Tasty and healthy at the same time!

There is a law: if a tree with fruits grows outside a private garden or a space you see is owned by someone, the fruits a tree has are free for everyone. It's quit rare since most towns and cities grow treas who have no fruits. But there are also rules like: If the branch of a tree grows over a fence outside the garden of someone this branch is no more owned by the person who owns the tree wich means if a branch grows out of a property and has for example 1 apple on it, that means you are allowed to get the apple

If it compares to glühwein or any of the but I tried at the local wine fest last year, I’m all for it! 🤩

Very good idea and respectful to adapt here, that's what Africans and Arabs don't do in Germany! Just look at Stuttgart! :(

I think a lot of people would jump at the chance of working with animals 😅

Wie will man denn sowas definieren? 😖

Ok!

FYI: You can't literally translate "it takes patience" into German. The verb in German is "brauchen" or, more elevated in style, "erfordern". "Es braucht/erfordert ein bißchen Geduld von den Leuten..." Also, "sh-prechen" not "s-prechen" ;-)

Still working on my “ts” instead of “z” pronunciation, the “sh” instead of “s”will have to wait 😅

@@PuntingForThePeople just think of a very thick American accent. They also say things like "shpray" and "shtroll". It's exactly the same thing. Also: memorize vocabulary not only visually but also auditively. I.e. say the words out loud when you are memorizing, have Mariann say them for you, rinse and repeat. Plus: it's easier to do it right from starters than to dent out a blemish afterwards
@Baccatube794 жыл бұрын
You could, for starters, begin practicing with Germany's highest mountain, the "Zugspitze". Say the word 10x in the morning, 10x before lunch, and 10x before sleeping. Or with every push-up you make.
