Wow Melvin, My name is Michael Dunn, and I am the owner for Desert Gatherings from who provides this Joshua tree product to the national park association from where you bought it. I LOVE this video series so much, thank you for showing the world how cool and amazing the Joshua Tree and spreading such wonderful information.

Hi, DG. Are you able to tell us if the seeds are from the Engelman (western) or the Jaegeriana (eastern ) variety of Joshua tree. I also bought your kit after watching Melvin's video and now I have yucca brevifolia fever 😅

@@lita7657 Our Joshua Seed is of the Engelman variety.

It's great to hear from you Michael! Your product is wonderful. I can't believe it's been 8 years since I planted my ten seeds already.

Thanks for finding out for me Lita! It took a year for my Joshua tree to respond to the change from apartment balconies to full sunlight, but it had a big growth spurt this spring and should resemble what what I've seen in the wild more as time passes.

Thanks for the video. My cactus seed supplier started offering Joshua tree seeds and I was wondering how fast they grow. I was afraid they’d take like 20 years to reach a foot in height, but I’m glad they look this nice after only 8 years. I’m definitely gonna grow them myself.

Mel, according to a research, if your Joshua tree is of the eastern variety (jaegeriana), it will branch out before flowering. The western variety found in Joshua Tree NP flowers 1st and then branches out. You're almost there!

This video series has been great. I started growing Johsua Trees when you were at about year 3. I live in the Mojave Desert so I've been transplanting them into the ground on my own property and my family's when they get about 2 or 3 years old. They do grow relatively slow but the ones in the ground always seem to have a spurt of growth in the springtime compared to the rest of the year

Thanks Melvin, hoping mine put on a bit of growth this year but yes they are slow. Would a wider pot not of been better to stop it possibly getting top heavy as it gets taller?
@TheMelvinWei Жыл бұрын
I chose these pots wanting to give my plants more room for downwards root growth, but then some of them got top heavy and blew over in the open during windy storms. It won't be a concern for this Joshua tree for many years at this glacial growth rate though. Also, the leaves offer almost zero wind resistance.

Great work! I have one as well. Why do you trim the leaves?
@vmac8972 Жыл бұрын
Can easily tell this is a pot grown joshua tree it seems to have a very thin trunk yet looks healthy. I’m in Boise area Idaho and there are some within the treasure valley. I got some seeds and germinating now and I knew they were slow growers and now wondering if it’s even worth it for how very, very slow it is. Was going to plant one or two in the front yard when I put down all rock and it will get full sun in the location I plan to put it. Not sure how long I should wait before planting though. I’m guessing a few years or so.

Wow, that's getting very big. Question. How come the spines are long and sparse? When I see others , the spines are short and very full. Just curious.

Are you in Nevada? This one is the western Joshua tree it grows tall with longer leaves and less branches. While the eastern one grows a lot of branches, shorter and short leaves.

Very nice! That's quite a bit of tip burn what's the EC or PPM in ur feed? 🙋
@TheMelvinWei Жыл бұрын
The tip burn in the wild is far worse than what you see here. I just use Miracle Gro, outdoor concentration, usually a gallon or so once a month or two.
@GROWNGAS Жыл бұрын
@@TheMelvinWei My friend google the pH and EC or PPM perameters of Joshua trees and get urself a cheap pH meter and a EC or PPM probe so u can dial ur feed in and u will clear that up. Tip burn is an indication ur feed concentration is to high. Natural soil in nature can be off as well but once u master it and keep ur feeds in check u'll never have it. It's more of a cosmetic thing then anything. All ur trees look fabulous in my opinion this is just some info Incase u ever wanted that to cease. Great work Melvin! 🙌👨🌾💯
@GROWNGAS Жыл бұрын
@@TheMelvinWei Most trees like a pH of 5.5-6.0 and a EC of 1.0 - 1.2 though I never grew those trees I mainly grow cannabis but every tree has its own perameters like citrus trees love it on the acidic side of the pH scale which is 5.0 - 6.0, 7.0 is neutral on the pH scale.

On my Joshua the leaves are curvy and not as straight as yours, mine is 3 years old. What could be the reason for that?
@TheMelvinWei Жыл бұрын
Mine didn't get full sun for the first 6+ years of its existence, so I figured that's why it looks so different from other Joshua trees.

Hey, my joshua tree with about 6 sets of leaves isn't growing even after this weeks heavy rain, it looks perfectly fine without any rot or decay but I'm scared I might have executed it because I turned the pot a couple times like you, should I be concerned or just try to fertilize it?
@lita7657 Жыл бұрын
You should only be concerned if there are more dead leaves than live ones. JTs go through a weird dormancy-like period after their first year and then take off again given the proper conditions.
