I have a Blue Atlas Cedar and want to take cuttings and make it into a bonsai. The tree is rather mature so I will take larger cutting from the tree so it takes less time. Any tips?

I agree with you, some people say that cutting is wasting time, but I do it and also air layering it coz I love it

Great to hear this. I do do this to help people in the early - middle stages get their feet on the ground and confidence up. Most things in bonsai are not dificult, but mostly scary. And a lot of information out there is only half-complete. :)

Love your content! Informative und relaxed… I have made a few hundred cuttings (Juniper, Acer Palmatum, Acer Ginnala, Chinese Elm, Forsythie, Potentilla, Cherry…) in the past years and really enjoy the process. I know they don’t Look like much for the first years, but eventually they will and that whole journey is very rewarding and fun.

Really enjoyed this video Jelle. I'm not an expert in junipers- I have only three in pots - but your information in this video was really useful. What's the largest juniper branch cutting that you have achieved to root? Also, cuttings in Spain are tricky because the air here is dry so the foliage dries pretty quickly. So, for cuttings I tend to use a propagator for high humidity.. would this also work ok for juniper cuttings?
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
Thx Blue Sky! I normally only root thin ones, say, up to pencil. Anything thicker and I prefer air layering. Key is to not let them dry out. SO out of sun and wind. If whether is dry, a humid environment -such as a propagator- can help. I keep the cuttings below a bench in the shade, where they get watered every time I water my trees :)

Thanks a lot for your nice comment. Feel free to share the video amongst -especially- beginners in bonsai. Do you know why you are not succesful with taking cuttings? Is this for juniper in specific? Or all types of cuttings? I am thinking of doing a vid looking at cuttings for different species..

Thank you so much for this insightful, inspiring video. I love how calmly you explain everything-it's pretty zen-like. I'll do that too now with my big juniper tree that I have to leave behind b/c of moving. I cared for it for 10 years and while it breaks my heart, I'll take my cuttings :D - Super tip! Very cool LB, nice trees 😁 I totally agree about enjoying the process, of course I could buy a tree a save me 10 years of process, and I would have lost 10 years of this experience, I wouldn't be able to see my path on the tree's progression, my hits and misses... So yes, I like to grow also from seed and cuttings... Buying a more advanced material is also nice, but it's just different.
