I've had land moss growing underwater for over a year. I found some growing on layer of accumulated dirt in my driveway and scooped it up to get rid of it. I felt bad for it lol and threw it in a little experimental tank in which I keep various plants and aquatic creatures I've found in different bodies of water over the years. I just rinsed it off in the sink and put it in, dirt and all. It's been doing quite well and the snails seem to like it too. I'll take your advice next time though and completely rinse off the dirt from any moss I collect especially if I decide to put some in my bigger planted tank with fish. Thanks for all the info. Good video.

 @Michael Langerman So after posting this I decided to take a closer look at my moss and took it out of the tank only to find that it was dead for the most part. There were a few remaining strands but most of what I thought was moss was actually algae and other plants so next time I'm washing off all the dirt first😬

@@hamsterhuey1497 In a couple of previous videos I showed dead moss - it looks alive and...pretty in aquariums. The only thing is it that dead does not grow.

Have you tried Sphagnum moss under water?
@4me
@4me 10 ай бұрын
Yes and no 🙂I had sphagnum moss growing in a very high humidity of my paludarium. I did not make a video about it yet. But since you asked - it grows pretty in high humidity and partially submerged. The samples I put fully submerged in water got misplaced by my Eastern newts. And I lost the samples as they got mixed with other mosses growing in the same tank. So, I could not complete the experiment. I will try again with sphagnum moss in future. looking forward to get my hands on wild samples of sphagnum moss.

I put moss that is from a pond or river on the glass of the aquarium and let it be like that so it grows more. It's easier in jar fish tanks.

for people who want their moss to get more mineral,nutrition and want to grow it more fast you can add a subtrate or a dirt
@4me
@4me 2 жыл бұрын
Adding substrate helps in newly setup aquariums for sure. Though, in my old aquarium gardens no need for substrate - I don't change water and waste produced over years by fish/critters/plants makes natural fertile substrate.

Happy New Year to you and your family! I post video updates on aquarium fish care routines either annually or once I get some significant changes/adjustments through the year. And usually I show many of my aquarium gardens in those videos. You can see them all in videos on this playlist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGbMepqcptCGotU I will publish an update probably in the following month or two (due to changes in feeding routines I've been testing recently - still have to collect more data on effectiveness and etc).

Happy Holiday Michael! Love your videos, i'm setting up my own land moss jar aquarium and live in the nyc area, can I buy some of your dwarf guppies from you? Or can you point me to where I can get some. Thank you and Happy New Years!
@4me
@4me 3 жыл бұрын
Hi neighbor! I breed my dwarf strain guppies from a regular pair of guppies from Petco. It took me a couple years (a bit more). One of the traits I breed them for is few pregnancies and less babies in each drop - works great for small aquariums! But it leaves me no fish to trade... I've been thinking to start a new strain of dwarfs - probably mix with Endlers (like them!) and hopefully with more babies (but not too much). It would time again. But that is fun project I enjoy and that is probably the best way for you to go as there is no dwarf guppies for sale in any pet store that I know. You may find mix of Endlers with Guppies of small size - it would be up to you to breed them smaller and smaller size. Small pet stores are great place to look for fish and everything related to it. My favorite in Manhattan is Pacific Aquarium & Plants located on Delancey. Or check local Craigslist. All the best on your adventure! Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Thank you! I never made a point of identifying mosses that I tried. A couple times I tried and get confused doing identification. And even with the same mosses it's always some uncertainty. Some samples just don't grow. I think it has to do with the season when I pick the sample. Warm seasons seems to be the best time for that reason. Here is a playlist of videos about mosses that I tried: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3mvk4J-ZseNoZo Take a look for visual id. All the best on your adventure!

Hi Michael! I have 4 sustainable aquariums set up since just after Christmas. I got some moss out of my backyard and have been growing it. Maybe I try keeping too much. Some turns brown and breaks off. How many plants or rooted houseplants keep a sustainable aquarium healthy?
@4me
@4me 2 жыл бұрын
I would remove the brown moss out even if it is not spoiled water. Brown moss may cause water discoloration - not everyone like it. Though, I had aquariums with slightly brownish water - you can make it look nice in its own way. Fast growing and large plants take more water - you will need more frequently to add water to the level. As for how many plants - even 1-2 will help and the aquarium would look tidier. I like to add new and move plants between aquariums through the year.

I'll try again, my first attempt the moss just rotted away. I didn't leave it in a jar first and maybe difference in temperature played a part. 🍀
@4me
@4me 3 жыл бұрын
I had moss samples collected even at cold winter temperature and generally I wash them all in cold top water. Most mosses hardy enough to withstand short period of low temperature. Dirt is the main reason for samples to start rot. You really have to wash it very thoroughly before placing it underwater.

I can not tell the scientific name for sure. Years back I tried to identify mosses that I've been experimenting with - it takes too much time and...makes no difference for my project (I use whatever I find locally). I believe the moss you asked me about is Bryum moss (I asked for help to ID this moss in a couple of previous videos - no one ever corrected me about the ID, so Bryum it stays for now :) Also, there are some other mosses that looks similar and grow underwater in the same manner (except the one that branched underwater - I wish I knew its name!)
